Why are forced displacement, ethnic cleansing and genocide an enduring feature of state systems? In this book, Heather Rae locates these practices of 'pathological homogenisation' in the processes of state building. Political elites have repeatedly used cultural resources to redefine bounded political communities as exclusive moral communities, from which outsiders must be expelled. Showing that these practices predate the age of nationalism, Rae examines cases from both pre-nationalist and nationalist eras: the expulsion of the Jews from fifteenth century Spain, the persecution of the Huguenots under Louis XIV, and in the twentieth century, the Armenian genocide, and ethnic cleansing in former Yugoslavia. She argues that those atrocities prompted the development of international norms of legitimate state behaviour that increasingly define sovereignty as conditional. Rae concludes by examining two 'threshold' cases - the Czech Republic and Macedonia - to identify the factors that may inhibit pathological homogenization as a method of state-building.

In Christianity and Human Rights: Christians and the Struggle for Global Justice, Frederick M. Shepherd has collected essays by scholars and activists who, in a wide variety of ways, confront the issue of Christianity's role in the burgeoning movement for human rights. The volume's contributors provide diverse perspectives on the theology behind the idea of human rights, the debate over the its meaning, and the evolution of the struggle for human rights. A wide variety of disciplinary perspectives are represented, from economics, political science and law to history, philosophy and theology. The essays also represent a broad political spectrum, including specific accounts from activists participating in the struggle for human rights. Separate chapters focus on cases from Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. Christianity and Human Rights begins and ends with attempts to synthesize current theory and practice, acknowledging both Christianity's great success and its failures in defending basic human rights around the globe.

The Denial Of Bosnia written by Rusmir Mahmutćehajić and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with categories.

Mahmutcehaji'c (former vice president of the Bosnia-Herzegovina government) first prepared this text as a lecture to be given at Stanford University in 1997, but he was unexpectedly denied a visa to enter the United States. The book is an indictment of the partition of Bosnia and a plea for Bosnia's communities to reject ethnic segregation and restore mutual trust. He argues that different religious and ethnic cultures have co-existed in Bosnia for centuries, and that the partitioning was made possible by Western complicity with Serbian and Croatian nationalists. Excerpt from The Bridge a Story of the Great Lakes He was almost running when he turned in at the entrance of his office building, hounded with a sudden fear of screaming in the street. It was time he relaxed the intolerable strain. He could have beaten the elevator man into insensibility for that one glance that might have been curiosity-or pity. For after all the firm was safe. He would not think of the rest nor even admit it to himself. He walked steadily enough down the corridor, and stopped at the familiar door. He read the curved black and gold letters of his name upon it two or three times before he went in. Everything which had belonged to his daily life held now this arresting quality of strangeness. No one looked up as he crossed the outer office. He was so nearly at the end of his endurance that he was grateful they spared him that. He had his hand on the door of his inner office when he saw that on the threshold lay a single white violet. Something, some vivid prescience of fear, told him that Moira was here and that he was to be Spared nothing. Nothing. He Opened that door also and went in, shutting it behind him. She was standing by the windows. She did not move at first, and for a moment he wondered to see her all in black. Then he remembered that, of course, she would be in black - for Gordon, his brother. He put his hands to his head. The crashing was growing very loud - hammers beating him down. The room was very silent. It stood so high that the noise of traffic in the street beneath troubled it no more than the sound of a river troubles the stillness of a forest. But there was no silence for Maclear. He knew that to meet Moira he must be strong as he had not been before. He must fail in nothing, yield nothing, admit no crack in his armour of justification. For, after all, he had done no more than a hundred other men. Why should he pay when a hundred others, with less excuse, went free P He had been betrayed by circumstance; luck had been bitterly against him. That was all. He must remember it.
