Here is an opportunity to pass through two centuries of American history as seen through the eyes of the Scottish-Presbyterian Bridges Clan. Robert Ferguson emigrated from Scotland in 1816 and settled in the small mountain town of Hancock, Maryland. He struggled to find his way as a farmer, and he co-founded the Hancock Presbyterian Church in the tradition of his forefathers from Scotland. His son Robert Bridges would find fortune in the production of cement and mining silica glass sand. At his death in 1908, he was the wealthiest man in western Maryland and the father of eleven children.Robert?s son Henry P. Bridges would become an acclaimed industrialist and conservationist. Bridges is credited with building a NYSE-traded company, Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation, the largest supplier of silica sand in the United States. But Bridges? real interest was the wild turkey, which he raised at the renowned Woodmont Rod and Gun Club. The club was founded in the 1870s. Among its guests were six American presidents, Amos & Andy, Babe Ruth and Gene Tunney. Bridges devoted his life to repopulating the wild turkey in North America. Though he succeeded, his story is virtually unknown. Finally, this family story spanning 200 years is told in all its extraordinary detail, from Scotland to Maryland to Tennessee.

Abolitionists, rebels and innovators have all tracked across the pages of Washington County history. Their stories and more were chronicled by beloved local historian Harriet Branton, who introduced readers of the "Washington Observer-Reporter "to the history hidden in plain sight. In the earliest tales, European settlers clashed with the Shawanese and Delaware Indians, and fiery local lawyer" "David Bradford led the Whiskey Rebellion. With the coming of the Civil War, the people of southwestern Pennsylvania overwhelmingly united to the cause of the Union--the LeMoynes of Washington and the McKeevers of West Middletown shepherded slaves to freedom, and Washington and Jefferson College sent its alumni to the key battles of the war. Join Branton as she journeys from the rough-and-tumble frontier days of Washington County to the twentieth century ushered in by coal, oil and iron rail.

In the heart of the Cumberland Valley, between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, lies Washington County—site of one of the nation’s oldest settlements dating back to 1737. Its location between Pennsylvania and West Virginia places this county at the crossroads of history and commerce. Washington County celebrates the birth and survival of a place and its people over centuries and mirrors the growth of our nation. American history comes alive in this region created independent of Frederick County in 1776, named for Gen. George Washington, and settled by English, French, Swiss, German, and Scottish settlers. Forgotten images of historic mills and bridges will allow readers to journey to the past. Remember the days of the C&O Canal and a way of life that has disappeared forever. Visit historic sites such as Fort Frederick and the first monument to honor George Washington. Relive the heyday of Pen Mar Park and enjoy the waters of Belinda Springs. Feel the effects that the Civil War, the Battle of Antietam, the National Road, and the coming of the railroad all had on this remarkable area years ago.
