In this volume of studies Professor Wordsworth assesses the contribution of women to the literature of the Romantic period. He discusses poets (Baillie, Barbauld, Betham, Blamire, Caroline Bowles, Bryan, Hemans, Landon, Lickbarrow, Norton, Robinson, Seward, Williams, Yearsley), novelists, storytellers and essayists (Austen, Burney, Sara Coleridge, Hays, Inchbald, Caroline Lamb, Mary Lamb, Mitford, Opie, Owenson, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Shelley, Smith), polemicists and pamphleteers (Mary Anne Radcliffe, Southcott, Wollstonecraft), and writers on education (Edgeworth, Catharine Macaulay, Hannah More). With a substantial introduction and index The Bright Work Grows is a powerful, engaged and plain-speaking introduction to women's writing during a time when attitudes and conventions were undergoing fundamental change.

When women were admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1860, female art students gained a foothold in the most conservative art institution in England. The Royal Female College of Art, the South Kensington Schools and the Slade School of Fine Art also produced increasing numbers of women artists. Their entry into a male-dominated art world altered the perspective of other artists and the public. They came from disparate levels of society--Princess Louise, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, studied sculpture at the National Art Training School--yet they all shared ambition, talent and courage. Analyzing their education and careers, this book argues that the women who attended the art schools during the 1860s and 1870s--including Kate Greenaway, Elizabeth Butler, Helen Allingham, Evelyn De Morgan and Henrietta Rae--produced work that would accommodate yet subtly challenge the orthodoxies of the fine art establishment. Without their contributions, Victorian art would be not simply the poorer but hardly recognizable to us today.

There has been a huge revival of interest in Victorian women's poetry in the last ten years, and it has led to a major reconfiguration of the English poetic landscape of the nineteenth century. This title offers a key selection of poems by 13 Victorian women poets from Christina Rosetti and Felicia Hemans to the witty, iconoclastic May Kendall. The book starts with a substantial general Introduction which places the work of the poets into a context both historical (that of the poems' production) and modern (that of their past and present reception). Each poet's work is introduced by an expansive headnote which tells the story of her life and writing career. The poems all have full explanatory notes to help readers unfamiliar with the period. A Bibliography lists general sources as well as useful further readings. Written in an engaging and accessible manner, the extensive annotations throughout Victorian Women Poets ensure that this fascinating poetry is enjoyable for undergraduate and non-specialist readers.

About the author, who makes no claim of greatness, to fortune or fame! Except what I hold dear in the service of my God, the Father, and my Lord, the Son of God, Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. I hold no brotherhood with religion, except to Christ. So I call myself Christian. As I believe in the Spirit of the most High God and the Christ Child, Jesus. The One that says, "Truly I say, My Father and I are one." Proclaim the "Good News" and praise the Holy Spirit that tells His word, just what and when to write. I spent my life as a Master Mariner, a Captain in the United States Merchant Marines. Along the way of life, I guess you could say Jesus called me to be a fisher of men. He gave me a wife, to help spread vision and insight into the Holy Bible, of then and now. What the Scripture points to, in the here and now. To make us aware of the Great Storm of the then and now! To point direction to the Son, Jesus is the way. The Father wants us all to come home. 2 Peter 1:20-21 2 Timothy 3:16 What more need I say. God Bless You
