The Bruegel Success Story. This small phrase evokes the brand invented by the great Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/7-69), which was capitalised on by his two sons and many followers. It was the natural theme for a symposium that brought together art historians, scientists and connoisseurs to celebrate the art of Pieter Bruegel and his indelible influence on the generations that followed. The idea for The Bruegel Success Story Colloquium took root at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels, where Bruegel's most enigmatic painting, the Dulle Griet, was being restored in preparation for the great Bruegel exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in 2018-19. The papers presented at the symposium that now appear as beautifully illustrated essays in this book are the fruit of research by both renowned experts and relative newcomers, all of whom have been profoundly touched by the art of Pieter Bruegel and his progeny.

Winner of the 2023 Roland H. Bainton Prize for Art History Written by the poet-painter Karel van Mander, who finished it in June 1603, the Grondt der edel, vry schilderconst (Foundation of the Noble, Free Art of Painting) was the first systematic treatise on schilderconst (the art of painting / picturing) to be published in Dutch (Haarlem: Paschier van Wes[t]busch, 1604). This English-language edition of the Grondt, accompanied by an introductory monograph and a full critical apparatus, provides unprecedented access to Van Mander’s crucially important art treatise. The book sheds light on key terms and critical categories such as schilder, manier, uyt zijn selven doen, welstandt, leven and gheest, and wel schilderen, and both exemplifies and explicates the author’s distinctive views on the complementary forms and functions of history and landscape.

Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel became known for his paintings, watercolors, and the engravings made from his drawings of allegories, biblical stories, landscapes, and peasant scenes. This biography follows Bruegel through Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Italy, discussing his childhood, apprenticeship to Pieter Coecke van Aelst, entry into Antwerp's painter's guild, work for artists Giulio Clovio and Hieronymus Cock, various patrons and commissions, family life, and how he used his work as political commentary against Spain's mistreatment of the Low Countries, as well as his artistic style and perspective. Sidebars, a glossary, an index, and a phonetics section accompany easy-to-read text and full-color reproductions of Bruegel's artwork, including Children's Games, The Tower of Babel, The Flight Into Egypt, and Peasant Wedding.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder is one of the world's most original artists who founded a dynasty of painters. His most popular works include Children's Games, Hunters in the Snow and Peasant Wedding Feast. He collaborated with Rubens on several important works. The first part of the book tells the story of the Bruegel family, including his sons Pieter the Younger and Jan theElder. The second part is a glorious wide-ranging gallery of their work. Unlike other Old Masters, the Bruegels focused on ordinary people: farmers, workers, children, dancing, celebrating, working. Their work, often surprisingly modern in tone, still speaks to us today.

This is the first sourcebook to trace the emergence and evolution of art markets in the Western economy, framing them within the larger narrative of the ascendancy of capitalist markets. Selected writings from across academic disciplines present compelling evidence of art’s inherent commercial dimension and show how artists, dealers, and collectors have interacted over time, from the city-states of Quattrocento Italy to the high-stakes markets of postmillennial New York and Beijing. This approach casts a startling new light on the traditional concerns of art history and aesthetics, revealing much that is provocative, profound, and occasionally even comic. This volume’s unique historical perspective makes it appropriate for use in college courses and postgraduate and professional programs, as well as for professionals working in art-related environments such as museums, galleries, and auction houses.

The nineteenth-century West saw extraordinary economic growth and cultural change. This volume explores and explains the birth of the modern world through the food it produced and consumed. Food security vastly improved though malnutrition and famines persisted. Scientific research radically altered the ways in which food and its relation to the body were conceived: efficiency became the watchword, norms the measure, and standardized goods the rule. At the same time, the art of food became a luxury pursuit as interest in gastronomy soared. A Cultural History of Food in the Age of Empire presents an overview of the period with essays on food production, food systems, food security, safety and crises, food and politics, eating out, professional cooking, kitchens and service work, family and domesticity, body and soul, representations of food, and developments in food production and consumption globally.
