An up-to-date account of the bryophytes of Israel and some adjacent regions. Summarizing over 20 years of research by Illana Herrnstadt and the late C.Clara Heyn of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Helene Bischler and Suzanne Jovet-Ast of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, it is mainly based on the extensive collections assembled during those years and kept in the Herbarium of the Hebrew University and in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle. Despite its small area, this region has been found to have an unexpected diversity of bryophytes. The bryophyte flora of Israel consists of 259 taxa - 220 of mosses and 39 of liverworts - comprising 9% of the described flora of Irael. 87 taxa were recorded in Irael for the first time during the preparation of this Flora.

With the first volume of 'Bryophyte locality data from the Near and Middle East', all published data of hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) and liverworts (Marchantiophyta) are presented to provide a solid data base and background for the whole area. Starting with the beginning of the collection activities (e.g., Forsskål 1775) it covers the whole period till the end of 2019. It is the first comprehensive catalogue for these organisms including Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sinai Peninsula, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen (incl. Socotra). Knowledge of species and its distribution is essential for floristic inventories, species catalogues, and further tools such as community structure, composition, biomonitoring, nature conservation, life history traits (morphological, anatomical and physiological adaptations), biochemical compounds (secondary metabolits, antimycotica). In addition, species distribution and occurrence today and in former time, is of basic importance in understanding plant diversity and eco-system processes, development, function and changes, especially with regard to the present increasing human influence and global warming and future tools. Although hornworts and liverworts belong to a group of mostly very small organisms that often are neglected and/or overlooked, they play an important and outstanding role in many habitats in nearly all countries and landscapes of the Near and Middle East as they are found in the understory of forests and woodlands, as pioneers on soil and rock, in steppes and deserts (organisms of "harsh environment"), in swampy areas and bogs, or as epiphytes on tree trunks. As scientific interest in plant diversity drastically increases recently, the ongoing interest stimulated us, to prepare this kind of data base to provide a solid background of what is known in the different countries of the Near and Middle East. It is a further step to integrate this large area into the Global Network of floristic knowledge and the tools of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation.

Illustrated Moss Flora Of Antarctica written by Ryszard Ochyra and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-13 with Science categories.

Mosses are a major component of the vegetation in ice-free coastal regions of Antarctica. They play an important role in the colonisation of ice-free terrain, accumulation of organic matter, release of organic exudates, and also provide a food and habitat resource for invertebrates. They serve as model organisms for physiological experiments designed to elucidate problems of plant cold tolerance and survival mechanisms and for monitoring biological responses to climate change. This Flora provides the first comprehensive description, with keys, of all known species and varieties of moss in the Antarctic biome. It has involved microscopic examination of around 10,000 specimens from Antarctica and, for comparison, from other continents. All species are illustrated by detailed line drawings, alongside information about their reproductive status, ecology, and distribution. This is an invaluable resource for bryologists worldwide, as well as to Antarctic botanists and other terrestrial biologists.

Distribution Atlas Of Plants In The Flora Palaestina Area written by Avinoam Danin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Science categories.

This volume comprises updated nomenclature, distribution, and habitat data for the species in the area covered in the four parts of Flora Palaestina, by Michael Zohary and Naomi Feinbrun-Dothan (Jerusalem: The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, 1966-1986). The distribution data are presented here in individual maps for each of the species recorded in the study area (defined as lying west of 360E). Four main phytogeographical regions - the Mediterranean, Irano-Turanian, Saharo-Arabian, and Sudanian - meet in Israel. The area's broad climatic and edaphic diversity is largely responsible for its botanical wealth - some 9.06 species per 100 sq. km. Of the 2,750 species listed herein, 276 were not previously recorded in Flora Palaestina. The 18,000 species-per-district records that form the basis of Flora Palaestina have been expanded to some 28,400, based largely on the author's investigations over the course of some forty years. Most of Israel's flora is documented in the Herbarium of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which aims to preserve all the species in the Flora Palaestina area.
