The complete text of the bestselling narrative history of the Vietnam War—based on the celebrated PBS television series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick More than forty years have passed since the end of the Vietnam War, but its memory continues to loom large in the national psyche. In this intimate history, Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns have crafted a fresh and insightful account of the long and brutal conflict that reunited Vietnam while dividing the United States as nothing else had since the Civil War. From the Gulf of Tonkin and the Tet Offensive to Hamburger Hill and the fall of Saigon, Ward and Burns trace the conflict that dogged three American presidents and their advisers. But most of the voices that echo from these pages belong to less exalted men and women—those who fought in the war as well as those who fought against it, both victims and victors—willing for the first time to share their memories of Vietnam as it really was. A magisterial tour de force, The Vietnam War is an engrossing history of America’s least-understood conflict.

The first part of this presentation deals with epidemiological aspects of combat burn injury in the 1982 Israeli-Lebanese conflict. The second part tries to evaluate care and treatment of the burned soldiers. Excluded from this presentation are Lebanese civilians hospitalized in several of the burn units. All burned soldiers were interviewed as soon as they recovered from the resuscitation period by medical (non-doctor) personnel. Details of the injury and other relevant points were recorded on a prepared questionnaire for computer workup. At a later stage the author reviewed all medical files of these soldiers to verify the medical details and extract all important facts for this presentation. Eighty-five percent of the soldiers with over 20% BSA burns or those with less extensive but deep burns were personally examined by the author.

"Fostering a better understanding of Latin America within an historical context, this fascinating collection of readings is based on the central theme and powerful drama of the two conflicting trends contributing to the nation-building in Latin American; these being the imposition of first European and then U.S. institutions from the 16th century onward and the local efforts to alter them. Within that theme, the book follows a three-goal course of study: 1) to reproduce documents that provide a better understanding of the Latin American past and present; 2) to introduce a wide variety of documentation (art work, short stories, poetry folk tales, and more); and 3) to draw heavily from Latin American sources."--Publisher description.

This volume brings together two very popular and active research fields: Swiss Studies and Intercultural Studies. It includes contributions on the movement of ideas, literatures, and individuals from one culture to another or one language to another, and the ways in which they have been either assimilated or questioned. All of the writers explore this general theme; some come from a literary angle, some look at linguistic inventiveness and translation, whilst others study the problems faced when crossing geographical and cultural borders or presenting ideas which do not `travel¿ well. By emphasising the connections, borrowings and mutual influences between Switzerland and other countries such as Germany, Hungary, France, the UK, and the Americas, the articles reaffirm the importance for Switzerland of intellectual openness and cultural exchange. Barbara Burns is Senior Lecturer in German at the University of Glasgow. She has published books and articles on a number of nineteenth-century German writers including Theodor Storm, Detlev von Liliencron, Louise von François and Adolf Müllner, and also has an interest in Swiss Studies, in particular the work of Eveline Hasler on which she has recently been publishing. She is Germanic Editor of the MHRA journal The Year¿s Work in Modern Language Studies. Joy Charnley has co-edited eight volumes of essays on Swiss literatures and history with Malcolm Pender and in 1996 they co-founded the Centre for Swiss Cultural Studies in Glasgow. She has written books and articles on French-speaking Swiss authors such as Yvette Z¿Graggen, Alice Rivaz, Anne-Lise Grobéty, Anne Cuneo, Janine Massard and Amélie Plume.

Pre-hospital management, critical care and basic concepts of burn surgery related to the acute phase, as well as the use of skin and skin substitutes in early stages of therapy are addressed in this volume. Chapters on supportive therapies such as optimizing nutrition and fluid homeostasis, infection control and treatment, respiratory support and pain management complete the comprehensive approach to the patient in this early stage of treatment, while chapters on epidemiology, prevention and disaster management enable the reader to evaluate the given information in a broader context.
