"Whether torture works or not, it does not work." -Norman Lang At a time in his life when he should have been soaking up the rich cultural history and natural beauty of the landscape around him, Norman Lang was busy keeping a low profile working as an English teacher in Cairo, Egypt. The 1960s were, among other things, a time of often violent political change the world over, and Scottish-born Lang quickly discovered that the Middle East was a hot spot for unrest. Lang relates his experiences as a twenty-something bachelor teaching abroad, visiting museums, imbibing the culture with his students, and patronizing the local tourist attractions in metropolitan Cairo. Not immune to the counterculture of the 1960s, Lang recalls philosophical discourses on love and relationships and government and politics, hazy nights at Egyptian pubs and dinner parties, his whirlwind affair with an American woman, and the nationally diverse array of friends he attracted while enjoying his Western salary in the Middle East. Peppered with anecdotes of his European home and the then-current events in America and other parts of the world, Lang provides a kaleidoscopic view of the 1960s culture and its ubiquitous, grumbling political undercurrents. The polarized tension erupts as a notable German couple is arrested under suspicion of espionage for Israel. Lang depicts the suddenly secretive behavior of those friends of his who didn't disappear altogether, culminating in his own arrest and subsequent incarceration and interrogation. A victim of fear and paranoia, rampant not only in Egypt at that time, Lang reflects on what happened to him and what could have happened if he had said anything that didn't depict him merely as a wrongly-accused tourist. Turning his experienced insight on today's world, Lang rounds out his journey through Middle Eastern turmoil and places today's current events under the microscope, including the element of torture in a modern context. By the end of Lang's memoir-esque tale and corresponding resoundingly relevant notions of patriotism, politics, and propaganda it may be difficult to maintain a black or white opinion on the rules of war and the roles of humanity. Steeped in Lang's real-life past experiences and paralleled to the audience's relatable world of today, The Cairo Incident leaves the reader with more than one moral-political conundrum to consider.

Lying in a pool of blood following a skiing accident at Vail, Secretary of State George Milam repeatedly mumbles a seemingly incoherent phrase. Using a memo recorder, a member of Milam’s skiing party documents his curious vocalizations. The secretary of state’s nonsensical ramblings will soon shake the world. Immediately upon analyzing the recording, Dr. Judith Miller3⁄4a talented linguist with the National Security Agency3⁄4realizes that Secretary Milam is speaking in the flawless Arabic of a native Egyptian speaker. Contrary to Milam’s dossier, the secretary of state is clearly not who he claims to be. Neither, she soon discovers, is the undersecretary of energy, Peter Laval. Using computerized voice spectrograms, Dr. Miller identifies fragmentary traces of guttural Arabic consonants in Laval’s otherwise perfect American English. She determines that Laval’s early roots, like Milam’s, are in Cairo. And if Cairo-based conspirators had surreptitiously transplanted both Milam and Laval into the U.S. decades earlier, what other covert Egyptian nationals now held sensitive U.S. government positions? And why had Laval suddenly begun to place so many calls to nuclear power plants? This is the challenge confronting Dr. Noel Parke, the director of the New York region of the Department of Homeland Protection. With the help of the gifted Dr. Miller, Parke must race against time to uncover and dismantle the intricate network of sleeper cells, and uncover the deadly goals of The Cairo Conspiracy.

The Cairo Genizah is considered one of the world's greatest Hebrew manuscript treasures. Yet the story of how over a quarter of a million fragments hidden in Egypt were discovered and distributed around the world, before becoming collectively known as “The Cairo Genizah,” is far more convoluted and compelling than previously told. The full story involves an international cast of scholars, librarians, archaeologists, excavators, collectors, dealers and agents, operating from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century, and all acting with varying motivations and intentions in a race for the spoils. Basing her research on a wealth of archival materials, Jefferson reconstructs how these protagonists used their various networks to create key alliances, or to blaze lone trails, each one on a quest to recover ancient manuscripts. Following in their footsteps, she takes the reader on a journey down into ancient caves and tombs, under medieval rubbish mounds, into hidden attic rooms, vaults, basements and wells, along labyrinthine souks, and behind the doors of private clubs and cloistered colleges. Along the way, the reader will also learn about the importance of establishing manuscript provenance and authenticity, and the impact to our understanding of the past when either factor is in doubt.

A collection of original short plays that focus on sexual harassment and assault in Egypt, by debut Egyptian playwrights These five original short plays, written by Egyptian students from the American University in Cairo in collaboration with Jillian Campana and Dina Amin, mark the first published plays in Egypt that deal directly with sexual harassment. Sexual crimes are not limited to the workplace or the street—they happen everywhere, from the bedroom to the café, in shops, on modes of transportation, and in businesses, homes, outdoor areas, and educational and religious institutions. They can be perpetrated by a stranger, acquaintance, friend, family member, or loved one and they can encompass many different types of sexual violence, including verbal, non-verbal, physical, or visual violence. This collection breaks social taboos by offering dramatic texts that reflect the reality of survivors of sexual harassment from multiple perspectives—families and couples, bystanders, victims and perpetrators, men and women. Many of the women portrayed in these plays are independent, educated, and well to do, but they are all subjected to varying degrees of sexual harassment and violence. Accompanied with narrative commentary that places the events in context, these plays and the issues they explore seek to challenge dominant perceptions about sexual harassment in the region and to shine light on the power imbalances and disparities that give rise to it. They will be of interest to artists, social science researchers, educators, and anyone interested in the issue of sexual harassment, and collaborative theater processes. Playwrights: Yehia Abdelghan, Marwan Abdelmoneim, Nour El Captan, Passant Faheem, Nour Ibrahim, Noran Morsi, and Omar Omar

The 2012 assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya was a premeditated 9/11 inspired terrorist attack. Sadly, until now, it’s never been recognized as one. More troubling, the Benghazi cover-up may well be at the center of the Obama, CIA’s claim of Russian Interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election as well as the driving factor in the FBI launching its Russia Probe during the height of the 2016 general election. On 9/11, 2012, the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya was attacked. The U.S. Intelligence Community identified the assailants as the terrorist group “Ansar Al Sharia.” The most plausible explanation for the 2012 assault: It was a planned 9/11 inspired terrorist attack, but that wasn’t the conclusion reached by the CIA and President Obama. Occam’s Razor is a philosophy of assessing issues predicated on the principles of plausibility. The philosophy can be summed up with the following statement: Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions is likely the right one. In other words: In the American Southwest, if one hears hoof beats—think horses, not zebras. Instead, the CIA and President Obama ignored obvious facts, reaching for the dubious explanation—“The Benghazi attack was the result of an obscure video ‘Innocence of Muslims’ released over the internet.” One must ask: Why was the most plausible hypothesis (horses) bypassed in favor of an unsupportive theory (zebras) involving an obscure video where there was no evidence it had even been viewed by the Benghazi attackers? Was there an ulterior motive? Did the 2012 Presidential election play a role in the CIA’s assessment? Was the Benghazi cover-up an “Act of Treason” on the part of President Obama and the CIA? What were President Obama and the CIA trying to hide? “Benghazi” takes a deep look at the facts and myths surrounding the 9/11, 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. The results are disturbing. Particularly troubling, Benghazi may be the nexus for the Russian Interference storyline of 2016—as well as the failed FBI’s Russia Probe investigation launched during the height of the 2016 Presidential general election.

“This is a tour de force of sophisticated global erudition.” —Filippo de Vivo, University of Oxford, UK “In its wide global range and rich variety of studies, this expertly edited volume provides an unprecedented view into the scribal practices of diverse cultural traditions in the early modern period.” —Johanna Drucker, University of California, Los Angeles, USA “This volume finally gives the colophon the place it deserves. We see scribes and printers at work in Thailand, the Deccan, Delhi, Damascus, Antwerp, and Timbuktu.” —Konrad Hirschler, University of Hamburg, Germany “In this cross-disciplinary endeavor, ten authors tell lively and exciting stories of historical scribal practices.” —Verena Klemm, University of Leipzig, Germany This book is the first to chart the global diversity of colophons between 1400 and 1800. The volume presents a new approach to scribal cultures that expands traditional definitions. Moving from the paradigm of codicological information towards a thorough interpretation of the wider social worlds of colophons in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, this volume uncovers the fascinating cultural history of early modern scribes. Chapters examine how those engaging in the composition and distribution of colophons shaped scribal identities, group cultures and bookish communities in a world in which manuscripts mattered. Authors build on approaches from anthropology, cultural studies, codicology, history, and philology to offer a new conceptual framework that studies colophons as scribal practices embedded in their changing social and cultural worlds. As a new contribution to the history of the book, this volume’s global approach pushes the boundaries of what constitutes a colophon.
