This powerful, moving, and "disturbing" book looks at the contemporary issues that block the attainment of a revitalized church--a church united rather than fragmented, a church tuned to justice for all rather than to provincial myopia. A Presence that Disturbs will engage the general reader and the specialist alike with a fresh perspective on what it means to follow Christ. Three themes garnered from Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl underpin the message of this book. To live you must choose: you must not let life "just happen." To love you must encounter: you must know that human encounter is the only authentic way to know and love. To grow you must suffer: you must know that suffering can be a vehicle of growth, a chance for redemption, a way to turn ourselves to the outside. Gittins discusses these themes in the context of the search for meaning. The new lease on life endowed by the Holy Spirit, the function of imaginative ministry, the communitas of true discipleship, and the radical actions of Jesus' ministry are just a few of the ideas explored in the quest for a new understanding of discipleship. "Authentic Christianity," says Gittins, "is outreaching and encountering; it communicates and ministers. Christianity, like its sibling, Judaism, does not produce complacency, but complicity or participation with others. Theses pages are an invitation to renewed discipleship and an appeal to radical Christianity in the footsteps and in the Spirit of Jesus, who prayed that his followers be one in him."

Radical Theology written by Jeffrey W. Robbins and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-08 with Philosophy categories.

"Radical theology" and "political theology" are terms that have gained a lot of currency among philosophers of religion today. In this visionary new book, Jeffrey W. Robbins explores the contemporary direction of these movements as he charts a course for their future. Robbins claims that radical theology is no longer bound by earlier thinking about God and that it must be conceived of as postsecular and postliberal. As he engages with themes of liberation, gender, and race, Robbins moves beyond the usual canon of death-of-God thinkers, thinking "against" them as much as "with" them. He presents revolutionary thinking in the face of changing theological concepts, from reformation to transformation, transcendence to immanence, messianism to metamorphosis, and from the proclamation of the death of God to the notion of God’s plasticity.

In Search Of Radical Theology written by John D. Caputo and has been published by Fordham University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-06 with Religion categories.

This sparkling collection of essays invites readers to join a seasoned scholar on his journey to catch “radical theology” in action, both in the Church and our culture at large. Capturing a career’s worth of thought and erudition, this rich volume treats readers to creative thought, careful argumentation, and sophisticated analysis transmitted through the lucid, accessible prose that has earned the author a wide readership of academics and non-academics alike. In tackling “radical theology,” John D. Caputo has in mind the deeper stream that courses its way through various historical and confessional theologies, upon which these theologies draw even while it disturbs them from within. They are well served by this disturbance because it keeps them on their toes. When we read about professional theologians’ losing their jobs in confessional institutions, the chances are that, by earnestly digging into what is going on in their tradition, they have hit upon radical theological rock. Unlike modernist dismissals of religion, radical theology does not debunk but re-invents the theological tradition. Radical theology, Caputo says, is a double deconstruction—of supernatural theology on the one hand and of transcendental reason on the other, and therefore of the settled distinctions between the religious and the secular. Caputo also addresses the challenge for radical theology to earn a spot in the curriculum, given that the “radical” makes it suspect among the confessional seminaries while the “theology” renders it suspect among university seminars. Journeying from the academy to contemporary American culture, In Search of Radical Theology includes a captivating presentation of radical political theology for the time of Trump. This utterly unique volume not only brings readers on an enlightening tour of Caputo’s thought but also invites us to accompany the author as he travels into intriguing new territories.

The Roots Of The Radical Theology written by John Charles Cooper and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1968 with Death of God theology categories.

This survey study of the contrapuntal or negatively critical developments in Western philosophy and theology points out some of the reasons why the new "radical theology" has arisen in our time. Dr. Cooper writes on the radical theology from a "front row seat"ohe studied under and wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Paul Tillich, hailed as the "father" of radical theology; and Mircea Eliade, the subject of much of Thomas J. J. Altizer's writings, was also his professor. In the course of his book, Dr. Cooper investigates most of the developments in modern theologyothe so-called quest for the historical Jesus, the struggle between liberalism and fundamentalism, the demythologizing movement, religionless Christianity, the civil rights struggle, and the "death of God" theology. He discusses all of them in connection with the historical influences that brought them into being. Viewing the radical attempts to recover this sense of transcendence (including Teilhard de Chardin's), Dr. Cooper urges that theology should respond positively and constructively to the "death of God" movement, and concludes that our present theological situation is such that "only the most radical attempts to recover the sense of the sacred...have any chance of success." Originally published by Westminster Press in 1967, this edition contains a new preface.

Reconstructing Christian theology and understanding Ingolf U. Dalferth here develops a "radical theology" from the event of God's presence to every present moment. In a concise and clear manner, Dalferth outlines the theological and philosophical approaches to hermeneutics in the modern era in order to promote a convincing and defensible theology for the twenty-first century. In doing so, theology unfolds "limit concepts" and develops "ideas of orientation" that illumine the ways in which human life is understood and lived in radically new ways in faith. Book jacket.

Beyond Cheap Grace written by Eldin Villafañe and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Christian life categories.

Foreword by Howard John Loewen As our lives become complex with the demands of our affluent and accelerating society, do we hear the gospel's timeless and insistent call to live the "obedience of faith"? In these three "sermonic essays" Eldin Villafañe takes on the task of awakening true obedience of faith through the themes of discipleship, incarnation, and justice. Beginning with discipleship, Villafañe draws on the "Christ hymn" of Philippians 2 to challenge Christians to choose the costly Christ-life. He then offers six contrarian perspectives on the incarnation from the early church as correctives to our current, culturally conditioned theological emphases. Finally, taking the book of Amos as a touchstone, Villafañe issues a call for just leadership among the nations. Adding interest and depth to this work are an insightful foreword by Dean Loewen and thoughtful responses by Richard Peace, Juan Francisco Martinez, and Veli-Mattí Kärkkäinen. Villafañe's Beyond Cheap Grace incisively extends Christ's call to discipleship, incarnation, and justice to the church, the academy, and Christian leaders of all traditions.

New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.
