Democracy has become widely regarded as the "ideal" system of government in the 21st century. The development of political parties and their unique nomination processes distinguish this form of government with others throughout the world. Within Canada, the franchise model has become the gold standard of party organization. This paper aims to answer whether the disallowance of candidates in the 2015 Canadian federal election reflects undue interference on the part of the party in local candidate selection. In answering this question, the number of candidates that were disallowed and reasons for their disallowance will be identified. Thematic analysis will be used to understand how this type of candidate impacts the franchise bargain. Research suggests that disallowed candidates appear to be a phenomenon that affects "stopgap candidates." While key findings are addressed, future research is necessary to confirm whether this finding is unique to the 2015 Canadian federal election.

In recent years, negativity has become a dominant theme in the political campaign. However, there are no comprehensive studies to measure the amount of negativity and to examine how parties and candidates adopt these negative strategies, particularly in the Canadian context. Although some studies have focused on a particular aspect of negative campaigning in a Canadian election, the question remains of how and to what extent parties adopt negative strategies in an election. In this thesis, I have collected and analyzed parties' press releases in the 2015 federal election to examine and explain negativity in parties' political campaigns. I have tested my results according to five primary theories of negative campaigning, including competitive positioning, ideological proximity, party organization, coalition or minority effect, and negative personalization, to see if these theories apply in the Canadian context. My results indicate that the 2015 federal campaign was a highly negative one, and most of the negative attacks have been directed towards the leader of the Conservative Party, Stephen Harper, while the Conservative Party published the least amount of negative attacks during the campaign. I also found that the Liberal Party has published the most negative statements during the campaign. My results also show that one of the influential factors in shaping parties' negative campaign strategies is the other parties' status in public opinion polls, particularly the federal voting intention factor. Although the results show that most of the attacks in the 2015 campaign targeted leaders of parties, I did not find enough support in my models to verify the negative personalization theory. The overall findings of this thesis show that Canadian elections are moving toward a presidential-style campaign, similar to the United States, by becoming more negative and more personalized, which can have significant implications for Canadian democracy.

"With the effects of issue ownership voting being assessed within previous Canadian elections, this thesis analyzes how issue ownership theory serves as a predictor of individual vote choice in the 2015 Canadian federal election. A binary logistic regression is used to examine how issue ownership theory emerges across each psychological dimension (associative or competency) and on a variety of issues - including the economy, health care, education, environment, crime and defense - to ultimately predict vote choice for each major political party (Liberal, Conservative, and NDP). Our results show a relationship between both the associative and competency dimensions of issue ownership and individual vote choice for each major party within the 2015 election. This thesis finds mixed results when assessing which dimension serves as a better predictor compared to the other. The competency dimension performs as a better predictor for the issues of health care and crime. However, the associative dimension emerges as a better predictor for the environment and education issues. This illustrates how the 2015 case adds further variation to the comparative issue ownership literature when pondering which dimension emerges as a better predictor. These findings illustrate a Canadian case where associative issue ownership voting emerges, and that during the 2015 election the Liberal Party emerges as having issue ownership over the most issues compared to the Conservatives and NDP when considering both the associative and competency dimensions.
