Excerpt from How to See Bristol: A Guide for the Excursionist, the Naturalist, and the Archaeologist The Preface to a book has been happily likened to the turnpike gate at the entrance of a city. Bristol has wisely abolished all her Pikes, save one trivial internal impost, and that is doomed. Following her example we discard lengthened apology for producing a book that was needed. We have left the beaten, well-worn track, got out of the ruts, and sought to lead our readers pleasantly and profitably through the ancient, royal, and free city and its suburbs. Excerpt from The City of Bristol Good roads are the proof of a good community. They make for better living. They are the constant reminder of the bigger, brighter and better ways of doing things, a higher type of country life, the application of scientific principles in agriculture; a more intimate realization of the rela tion of the individual to the community and of the community to the State and Nation. A good road is a good business investment, an edu cator, a moral force, a civilizer and an index to a high type of citizenship. Excerpt from The New Guide, or Picture of Bristol, With the Beauties of Clifton: A Descriptive Arrangement of Excursions in Their Vicinities: And an Appendix on Their Geology, Botany, &C. &C. Illustrated With a Plan of the City, a Map, &C This edition has been carefully revised, and will be found to contain much additional information, particularly in literary and curious anecdotes relative to the vicinity of the city, and a most important paper on Geology from the able pen of Mr. Cumberland. The author also owes his best acknowledgments to Mr. Miller, curator of the Bristol Philosophical Institution, and to Mr. Rootsey, for the valuable communications which enrich the appendix. Of the embellishments, it is sufficient to remark, that the plan of the City, Clifton, and the Hotwells, is engraved by Mr. Hall, whose productions in this branch of art are eminently distinguished by their clearness, elegance, and beauty. The map of the country, twelve miles round the city, is found particularly convenient for reference; and together, the plan and the map, furnish the stranger with a perspicuous guide to the several objects of curiosity and interest in the city and in its vicinity. In a word, neither labor nor expense has been spared to render this little work worthy of the ancient and opulent city it attempts to describe; and still more deserving of the patronage with which this volume has hitherto been distinguished. Bristol And Its Famous Associations Classic Reprint written by Stanley Hutton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-19 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Excerpt from Bristol and Its Famous Associations In connection with a city whose foundation dates before the Conquest, there must of necessity be many and famous personal associations which have gathered round its centuries of growth and progress. Impelled by a love of his native city, it has been the task - a fascinating one - of the writer to gather together, from every available source, biographical material, which he has organised under definite headings, and which he trusts will have a real and living interest for his fellow-citizens, if not for that wider audience, the general public. If those of his critics who scan the following pages will be good enough to bear in mind the enormous field these researches cover, they will perhaps pardon any omissions in these biographical cameos, many of which are omitted by intention. Kings and queens and others who have had merely an accidental or purely historical association have been ignored; the ordinary histories will supply their omission. By consulting, too, the best authorities, the writer has endeavoured to be accurate as well as interesting. In conclusion, the author desires most gratefully to acknowledge his indebtedness to that biographical treasury, The Dictionary of National Biography; the encyclopaedic Annals of Bristol's Froissart, John Latimer; the incitement, as well as material, derived from the works of the late John Taylor; and lastly to the generous and unfailing encouragement - without which this work would never have been written - of the proprietors of The Western Daily Press, Messrs. Walter and W. Nichol Reid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
