Terencjusz – podstawowa lektura szkolna całej starożytności, średniowiecza, odrodzenia; źródło inspiracji dla komedii chrześcijańskiej, teatrów konwiktowych, dramy mieszczańskiej; wzór eleganckiej łaciny jej kolokwialnym rejestrze; skarbnica sentencji… Terencjusz stał się tak popularny, że przestał interesować badaczy, wydawało się bowiem, że nie można już nic powiedzieć, co nie zostałoby powiedziane wcześniej A jednak ostatnie dwie dekady przyniosły prawdziwy renesans w badaniach nad tym poetą, a w konsekwencji nowe, niekiedy zaskakujące odczytanie jego komedii. Nawet skąpe informacje o życiu i walce o scenę zyskały w tym świetle odmienne niż dotąd oblicze. Oddawana do rąk czytelnika monografia stara się zaprezentować całe to spektrum interpretacji wraz z propozycjami autorki. Terencjusza najbardziej interesuje człowiek, jego osobowość, charakter, zalety i przywary, ale także reakcje na uwikłanie w codzienne i niecodzienne problemy. Nie bez powodu mówi się, że każda ze sztuk to wnikliwe studium psychologiczne. Dlatego monografia najwięcej miejsca poświęca temu właśnie zagadnieniu. Stara się także pokazać, że Terencjusz nawet nie próbuje konkurować ze swoim poprzednikiem – Plautem, nie pociąga go powielanie schematów fabularnych, a jedynie ich przetwarzanie. Wyraźnie widać, że nie chce naśladować, przeciwnie – ucieka od ustanowionego przez Plauta wzorca, szukając dla siebie nowych, bo zmodyfikowanych, form zgranych już motywów. Monografia weryfikuje także dotychczasowe ustalenia w dziedzinie języka i metryki. Podkreśla, że sztuki Terencjusza pełne są barwnej metaforyki, nie stronią od obscenicznych skojarzeń, postaci nie mówią tak samo, a wykorzystane metra w specyficzny sposób wspierają fabułę oraz wzmacniają wizerunki bohaterów. Nowa monografia to nowe oblicze Terencjusza.
