Situating Caribbean Literature and Criticism in Multicultural and Postcolonial Studies is a pioneer in advancing the difficult but necessary argument of situating and centering Caribbean literature and criticism at the foundation of multicultural and postcolonial studies through an interdisciplinary, international, and intercultural manner, made possible by the author's unique multicultural and transnational interest and experience. The Caribbean, more than any other region, has suffered from European imperialism - annihilation of the native population, piracy amongst the European powers, deracination and atrocities of the slave trade, and subsequent systems of indenture - but has received the least critical and international attention. Situating Caribbean Literature and Criticism in Multicultural and Postcolonial Studies argues that Caribbean criticism - shaped by the region's socio-economic, political, and historical phenomena - has a more complex and significant marriage with postcolonial and multicultural studies than acknowledged by the international community. Caribbean scholars should not only seek to legitimize and publicize the marriage and its depth, but also expand the borders of its scholarship and protest its «disneyfication» and prostitution.

This book compares and contrasts the contemporary development experience of neighbouring, geographically similar countries with an analogous history of exploitation but by three different European colonisers. Studying the so-called 'Three Guianas' (Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana) offers a unique opportunity to look for similarities and differences in their contemporary patterns of development, particularly as they grapple with new and complex shifts in the regional, hemispheric and global context. Shaped decisively by their respective historical experiences, Guyana, in tandem with the laissez-faire approach of Britain toward its Caribbean colonies, was decolonised relatively early, in 1966, and has maintained a significant degree of distance from London. The hold of The Hague over Suriname, however, endured well after independence in 1975. French Guiana, by contrast, was decolonised much sooner than both of its neighbours, in 1946, but this was through full integration, thus cementing its place within the political economy and administrative structures of France itself. Traditionally isolated from the Caribbean, the wider Latin American continent and from each other, today, a range of similar issues - such as migration, resource extraction, infrastructure development and energy security - are coming to bear on their societies and provoking deep and complex changes.

This book is the first major study of French Caribbean literature in light of the concept of postcoloniality. Postcolonial theory debates have developed in the anglophone domain, and have not as yet referred prominently to francophone literature. Jeannie Suk investigates how the literature of Martinique and Guadeloupe provides a kaleidescopic view of the paradoxes at the heart of postcoloniality. Through subtle and provocative readings of Aimé Césaire, Edouard Glissant, Maryse Condé, Baudelaire, Freud, and others, she illuminates how the development of French Caribbean literature and debates about négritude, antillanité, and creolité contribute to theories of in-betweenness and incompleteness central to postcolonial modes. In each chapter, lively and detailed analyses of literary and critical texts reveal connections between key thematic, conceptual, rhetorical, and psychic issues that form the interface of Caribbean and postcolonial concerns. The first part paves theoretical ground, focusing on readings of two seminal texts, Césaire's Cahier d'un retour au pays natal and Glissant's Discours antillais; the second part concentrates on Maryse Condé's exemplary work. Lucidly articulating the overlap and interplay of the distance of oceanic crossing, the discontinuities of allegorical signification, and the gap at the heart of trauma, Suk probes the paradoxical dynamic of impossible yet inevitable returns in space, time, and the psyche.
