In the world of literary journals and little magazines, the Carolina Quarterly is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the South. Founded in 1948 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the magazine has published many luminaries of modern and contemporary literature, including Robert Morgan, Evie Shockley, Joyce Carol Oates, Doris Betts, and others. This anthology gathers some of the best work from the last three-quarters of a century, along with an informative essay about the journal's history and impact. The volume reminds us of the ways small literary journals reflect the voices of their region and changed the literary landscape. This work reaches beyond the imagined boundaries of a single university or single state. Thus the anthology also celebrates a form—the student-run literary journal—that has shaped the regional and national conversation and reflects the astounding accomplishment of the Carolina Quarterly over the past seventy-five years.

Winner of the 16th Annual Writers Digest Self-Published Award for Poetry, 2008 An Eric Hoffer Book Award Winner, 2007 I am always happy to drop everything--pretty nearly--when I make the acquaintance of a new poet as good as E.M. Schorb. James Dickey The poems of E.M. Schorb shine calmly even as they buzz with energy; are connaissant with the world and yet transcendent of it; make something deeply funny and yet highly sad--given a world and a time and a good mind's eye. This is the work of a mature intelligence, its ironies unadulterated by cynicism, and its swells informed by understatement. Heather McHugh Schorb's poetry is rich with humor and an almost gestaltic sense of clarity; this unique voice allows him to maintain a tonal unity while moving through a variety of forms. Raymond Thibodeaux, "New Delta Review" Schorb draws from science, art, literary history, and popular culture, balancing these subjects in a thoughtfully conceived and organized book. Lurking behind all is the danger and violence of life--call it man's and nature's inhumanity to each other--which Schorb handles maturely, without cynicism, and often with a humor that places him somewhere between Marvin Bell and Kenneth Koch. Todd Verdun, "The Carolina Quarterly" I think Ed Schorb is one of our very finest poets. Some of the poems are breathtaking both for their literary skill and for their human appeal. E.M. Schorb's work has range, variety, wit, depth and a zest for both language and life. Anthony S. Abbott, poet and author of the Novello Prize winning novel, Leaving Maggie Hope "Schorb's poems are good modern poems, on a high literary level--some are touched with greatness." Cornel Lengyel, poet, playwright, publisher: Dragon's Teeth Press

South Carolina Women written by Marjorie Julian Spruill and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with History categories.

Covering an era from the early twentieth century to the present, this volume features twenty-seven South Carolina women of varied backgrounds whose stories reflect the ever-widening array of activities and occupations in which women were engaged in a transformative era that included depression, world wars, and dramatic changes in the role of women. Some striking revelations emerge from these biographical portraits--in particular, the breadth of interracial cooperation between women in the decades preceding the civil rights movement and ways that women carved out diverse career opportunities, sometimes by breaking down formidable occupational barriers. Some women in the volume proceeded cautiously, working within the norms of their day to promote reform even as traditional ideas about race and gender held powerful sway. Others spoke out more directly and forcefully and demanded change. Most of the women featured in these essays were leaders within their respective communities and the state. Many of them, such as Wil Lou Gray, Hilla Sheriff, and Ruby Forsythe, dedicated themselves to improving the quality of education and health care for South Carolinians. Septima Clark, Alice Spearman Wright, Modjeska Simkins, and many others sought to improve conditions and obtain social justice for African Americans. Others, including Victoria Eslinger and Tootsie Holland, were devoted to the cause of women's rights. Louise Smith, Mary Elizabeth Massey, and Mary Blackwell Butler entered traditionally male-dominated fields, while Polly Woodham and Mary Jane Manigault created their own small businesses. A few, including Mary Gordon Ellis, Dolly Hamby, and Harriet Keyserling exercised political influence. Familiar figures like Jean Toal, current chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, are included, but readers also learn about lesser-known women such as Julia and Alice Delk, sisters employed in the Charleston Naval Yard during World War II.
