This is the The Cartoon Gospels (lectionary passages from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) were never so much fun to read! The Cartoon Gospels contain cartoons that bring out the humor in the Bible through the use of cartoons as sort of visual parables. Jesus used parables - humorous, short, memorable stories that convey truth. Cartoons that are visual parables are simply cartoons that attempt to do the same thing ... bring out biblical meaning in a fun and memorable way. Hopefully with the help of a humorous visual aid you will see new aspects to the scriptures that may otherwise be missed. This revised edition of The Cartoon Gospels completes a more uniform set along with The Cartoon Old Testament and The Cartoon New Testament.

The Cartoon New Testament explores scripture passages from the common lectionary through the use of cartoons and musings. The passages are in biblical order by book, chapter and verse. The lectionary three-year cycle is referenced at the end of the book. However, the Gospels are included in a separate book entitled The Cartoon Gospels. Why cartoons? A cartoon is somewhat like a visual form of parable. A parable is a short and engaging story with a message. The idea behind a parable is that the listener will enjoy it enough to remember it and retell it to others (just think if they had e-mail back then!). There are parables in both the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and New Testament, perhaps none more well known than those told by Jesus in the Gospels. Humor, in general, goes a long way toward illustrating a point, often more effectively than serious discourse. Adam and Eve provide a running commentary at the bottom of each cartoon. Adam and Eve became the marginal commentators of choice because of their unique place in human history. In addition, cartoonist's privilege is used, which simply means that silly things like time, space, history, etc. are all there to distort and play with tongue-in-cheek. The "musings" section provides some extra context. The goal is to deliver maximum insight in minimum space; thus the one-page-per-passage format of the book. This is a makes a great companion to a trusted commentary or bible study.

The Gospel of John is one of the most difficult books of the New Testament. It is thus fitting that so much scholarship and study has been aimed at understanding this profound work. William Anderson and cartoonist Richard Diesslin have come together to create this new and unique look at John by combining Anderson's erudite commentary and Diesslin's whimsical visual parables of the main passages in the Gospel of John. Each of the fifty-eight major events and teachings in the Gospel are covered first in an enlightening commentary, then elucidated further by a playful yet reverent cartoon.

This book, Out to Lunch - Cartoons with an Appetite for the Ridiculous by Rich Diesslin contains over 170 of his favorite Out to Lunch cartoons. The idiom "Out to Lunch" (OTL) means crazy or out of touch with the reality, so that seemed a fitting strip name for Rich's single-panel general comic. OTL cartoons have been around for more than a decade in various forms and various media including newspapers, magazines, on the internet at the-cartoonist.com and on merchandise. If you haven't heard of them before, that's not surprising since the plethora of media outlets still only reach a limited audience. Hopefully you'll see them more and more in the future and you can find them weekly at the-cartoonist.com. Polly Keener, cartoonist and creator of the Hamster Alley cartoon strip sums it up this way: "Rich displays a quirky Gary Larson-esque sense of humor in lots of fun, often animal-centered, cartoons. But, of course, there are funny people, humorous holidays and all manner of other toons, too. In Out to Lunch, he makes the viewer think a bit. Sometimes, his humor can be very subtle, but keep looking until you have that satisfying "Aha " moment. He manages to pack a lot into his drawings and keep the wording to a minimum - a real achievement. Many cartoonists consider a "sight gag," where all or most of the humor is purely visual, the most accomplished type of cartoon humor of all. Out to Lunch offers a whole smorgasbord of cartoons and all neatly classified in the Table of Contents (rare in cartoon books) so you can find your favorite topics fast." Rich is also the cartoonist of two other comic panels - a scout cartoon called Knots or Not and a biblical cartoon called the Cartoon Gospels.

Each week brings a lighthearted opportunity to remember that humor and the gospel are not mutually exclusive. The Drawn to the Gospels series covers all of the Sundays in the lectionary year, as well as special days such as Christmas, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday, and Ascension Day. Each entry contains a cartoon illustration of the gospel, a short paragraph of introduction, and some engaging questions. The cartoons are scaled so they can be reproduced for bulletins, inserts, or even posters, bringing weekly gospel readings to life. These amusing and original reflections deepen scriptural literacy and engagement among members of the Episcopal Church, including youth groups, and will inspire some fun in the process.
