Philosophical and scientific defenses of Indirect Realism and counterarguments to the attacks of qualiaphobes. Many philosophers and cognitive scientists dismiss the notion of qualia, sensory experiences that are internal to the brain. Leading opponents of qualia (and of Indirect Realism, the philosophical position that has qualia as a central tenet) include Michael Tye, Daniel Dennett, Paul and Patricia Churchland, and even Frank Jackson, a former supporter. Qualiaphiles apparently face the difficulty of establishing philosophical contact with the real when their access to it is seen by qualiaphobes to be second-hand and, worse, hidden behind a "veil of sensation"--a position that would slide easily into relativism and solipsism, presenting an ethical dilemma. In The Case for Qualia, proponents of qualia defend the Indirect Realist position and mount detailed counterarguments against opposing views. The book first presents philosophical defenses, with arguments propounding, variously, a new argument from illusion, a sense-datum theory, dualism, "qualia realism," qualia as the "cement" of the experiential world, and "subjective physicalism." Three scientific defenses follow, discussing color, heat, and the link between the external object and the internal representation. Finally, specific criticisms of opposing views include discussions of the Churchlands' "neurophilosophy," answers to Frank Jackson's abandonment of qualia (one of which is titled, in a reference to Jackson's famous thought experiment, "Why Frank Should Not Have Jilted Mary"), and refutations of Transparency Theory. Originally published in 1982, the aim of this book is a controversial one – to refute, by the most rigorous philosophical methods, physical realism and to develop and defend in its place a version of phenomenalism. Physical realism here refers to the thesis that the physical world (or some selected portion of it) is an ingredient of ultimate reality, where ultimate reality is the totality of those entities and facts which are not logically sustained by anything else. Thus, in arguing against physical realism, the author sets out to establish that ultimate reality is wholly non-physical. The crucial elements in this argument are the topic-neutrality of physical description and the relationship between physical geometry and natural law. The version of phenomenalism advanced by John Foster develops out of this refutation of physical realism. Its central claim is that the physical world is the logical creation of the natural (non-logical) constraints on human sense-experience. This phenomenalist perspective assumes that there is some form of time in which human experience occurs but which is logically prior to the physical world, and Foster explores in detail the nature of this pre-physical time and its relation to time as a framework for physical events. This book was a major contribution to contemporary philosophical thinking at the time.

The Book of the Six Fields of the Senses receives its name from the homonymous saṃyutta with which it begins and is the dominant one in terms of its length and doctrinal weight. This saṃyutta makes a functional analysis of all the processes involved with the relationship with the exterior, where it is shown that none of them is controlled. For example, with respect to sight, for example, the objective, that which is seen is not controlled. The subjective, which is the eye, is not controlled, you cannot make the eye see as you wish. Neither the eye contact nor the qualia as a result are controlled. Where the eye, the visual figures, the eye contact and the visual qualia are, there is the world or what is known as the world. Therefore, the relationship with the world is uncontrollable or, which is the same thing, it is not me. What is not controlled is unpleasant and causes suffering. We are before the description of the slavery that Samsara means. Following the functional analysis we have the following booklet dedicated to emotional reactions which contains 31 discourses on the three types of emotional reactions: pleasant, unpleasant and indifferent. In the process of experience, emotional reactions arise from qualia and stimulate craving. The result of the analysis is that, although emotional reactions are still experienced, they do not induce craving. The next saṃyutta is dedicated to women with their virtues and defects. The next four, relate to persons and a fifth to chiefs. The two closing saṃyuttas relate to Nibbāna and everything unstated.
