Charles contrajo matrimonio en 1855 con Mary Foley, perteneciente a una familia irlandesa residente en la ciudad escocesa. Los detalles del nacimiento de Arthur y sus hermanos son poco claros. Algunas fuentes manifiestan que eran nueve ni�os, algunas otras que diez y parece que tres murieron peque�os.
