After completing an eight-week speaking engagement run for his success in Grand Junction, Colorado, Daniel returns to his quiet law practice in Ironton, Colorado. With almost no cases going on and the bills piling up, Daniel is starting to get worried. Barry wants Daniel to take the case of his poor security officer, Bill Berman, whom after being shot by the bandit, is charged with their alleged murder. Daniel takes on the case and is once again up against the best that the 6th Judicial District has to offer. The evidence that is gathered seems to be all too conveniently pointing to the accused security officer. Daniel doesnt like it one bit and decides to use his resources to find the real killer. For Daniel the choices are grim for Bill Berman; life in prison without parole for First Degree Murder, 20-years to life for Second Degree Murder or 15-years to life for Manslaughter. Daniel doesnt accept any of the plea bargains offered by Linda. While preparing for the forthcoming arraignment, preliminary hearing and soon to follow trial, a terrible set of events befalls Daniel. This monograph examines the metaphysical commitments of the new mechanistic philosophy, a way of thinking that has returned to center stage. It challenges a variant of reductionism with regard to higher-level phenomena, which has crystallized as a default position among these so-called New Mechanists. Furthermore, it opposes those philosophers who reject the possibility of interlevel causation. Contemporary philosophers believe that the explanation of scientific phenomena requires the discovery of relevant mechanisms. As a result, new mechanists are, in the main, concerned solely with epistemological questions. But, the author argues, their most central claims rely on metaphysical assumptions. Thus, they must also take into account metaphysics, a system of thought concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world around it. This branch of philosophy does indeed matter to the empirical sciences. The chapters investigate the nature of mechanisms, their components, and the ways in which they can bring about different phenomena. In addition, the author develops a novel account of causation in terms of activities. The analysis provides the basis for many further research projects on mechanisms and their relations to, for example, the mind-body problem, realization, multiple realization, natural kinds, causation, laws of nature, counterfactuals, and scientific levels.

This book combines virtue reliabilism with knowledge first epistemology to develop novel accounts of knowledge and justified belief. It is virtue reliabilist in that knowledge and justified belief are accounted for in terms of epistemic ability. It is knowledge first epistemological in that, unlike traditional virtue reliabilism, it does not unpack the notion of epistemic ability as an ability to form true beliefs but as an ability to know, thus offering a definition of justified belief in terms of knowledge. In addition, the book aims to show that this version of knowledge first virtue reliabilism serves to provide novel solutions to a number of core epistemological problems and, as a result, compares favourably with alternative versions of virtue reliabilism both in the traditionalist and in the knowledge first camp. This is the first ever book-length development of knowledge first virtue reliabilism, and it will contribute to recent debates in these two growing areas of epistemology.
