* Critical retrospective on the first decades of the transition from planned to free-market economy in Central Asia * Contributions from both Eastern and Western scholars * Includes both theoretical NGO research and practical examples taken from experience During the important, early years of post-socialist transformation in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Mongolia, the Open Society Institute/Soros Foundation was arguably the largest and most influential network in the region. How NGOs React follows the Soros Foundation's educational reform programs there and raises larger questions about the role of NGOs in a centralist government, relationships NGOs have with international donors and development banks, and strategies NGOs use to interpret global reforms locally. The authors, all former or current educational experts of the Soros Foundation, analyze the post-socialist reform package at the country-level, highlighting the common features such as decentralization, privatization, vouchers and liberalization of the textbook publishing market. They look at the global reforms and their variations as they were transferred to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan over the past decade. A unique combination of perspectives from Western as well as Eastern scholars based in the region makes this collection an essential retrospective on key processes involved in transforming educational systems since the collapse of the socialist bloc. Contributors: Tatiana Abdushukurova, Erika Dailey, Valentin Deichman, Natsagdorj Enkhtuya, Alexandr Ivanov, Saule Kalikova, Elmina Kazimzade, Anna Matiashvili and Armenuhi Tadevosyan.

"The two authors show, with tables, figures, and theoretical insight, the economic paths of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia since independence, and their prospects for integration into the global economy. Reconceptualizing the Caucasian economic space, they show how the Caucasian economies are linked to one another, to regional powers and associations, and to the broader global markets in Europe, Asia and the United States. They investigate the prospects for a common Caucasian regional economic space and looking at the Caucasian economies since independence, remind us that no economy can be isolated, not even small and peripheral economies like those in Caucasia. They illustrate the critical role the region is beginning to play in global energy markets and as a transport hub between Asia and Europe. This is the first book in English to explore the geo-economics of Caucasia. The authors should be commended for bringing together such detailed analysis and information into one book."--BOOK JACKET.

The Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries are at an important juncture in their economic transition. Following significant economic progress during the 2000s, recent external shocks have revealed the underlying vulnerabilities of the current growth model. Lower commodity prices, weaker remittances, and slower growth in key trading partners reduced CCA growth, weakened external and fiscal balances, and raised public debt. the financial sector was also hit hard by large foreign exchange losses. while commodity prices have recovered somewhat since late 2014, to boost its economic potential, the region needs to find new growth drivers, diversify away from natural resources, remittances, and public spending, and generate much stronger private sector-led activity.

Informal Markets And Trade In Central Asia And The Caucasus written by Susanne Fehlings and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-11 with Business & Economics categories.

This edited book introduces new research on informal markets and trade in Central Asia and the Caucasus. The research presented in this volume is based on recent field research in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as Beijing, Guangzhou, Yiwu and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China. The nine chapters in this book illustrate how informal markets and trade in Central Asia and the Caucasus have provided space for millions of people across the region to negotiate changes in state and society in the three decades since the breakup of the Soviet Union and the emergence of successor states. Collectively, the book suggests that informality should be seen as a normative order for polities in Central Asia and the Caucasus for three reasons: (1) The inability – or unwillingness – of the states to measure commercial transactions. (2) The highly personalized nature of small business operations that rest on networking and social relations, oral agreements and trust. (3) Markets and bazaars being embedded within states in which clientelism frequently thrives. This book is a significant new contribution to the study of trade and informal markets in Central Asia and the Caucasus, and will be a great resource for academics, researchers and advanced students of Sociology, History, Politics, Business, Economics, Social Anthropology and Geography. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal, Central Asian Survey.

Many of today's researchers of the Caucasus focus in particular on analyzing ways to achieve peaceful settlement of the conflicts in the Caucasus, while only a few publications are devoted to the state of economic interrelations in the region and their development prospects. The goal of the book is to reconsider the views that have formed about the Caucasus and analyze the main geopolitical and geo-economic problems of the integration prospects of the region. Research of the Caucasus within the framework of geopolitical economy is also acquiring special significance due to the energy resources of the Caspian Sea Basin.

Financial Globalization And Post Communist Georgia written by Vladimir Georgievich Papava and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Business & Economics categories.

In most cases the problems caused by financial globalization are identical in various countries, which is why it is especially important to develop some standard solutions. Nevertheless, it is also doubtless that economic "recipes" for "small" and "big" countries can be different and it would be a mistake to apply only a uniform approach to all of them. The book evaluates an international financial system development potential in the context of "corporate crises" started in the USA and a probable impact on international financial markets and business activities. With the introduction of the Euro, a "new three-pole world currency system" was established. In this connection, two quite sensational forecasts made during the last two years regarding the collapse of the US Dollar are analyzed. These forecasts make a pretty "gloomy picture" of the future of both the US Dollar and the international monetary system. The book draw reader's attention to global exchange rate instability and its implications for Georgia. It is demonstrated that as a small economy, Georgia cannot have any substantial influence on global economic developments; however, if it succeeds to pursue more-or-less reasonable economic policy, it may generate some positive results, or at least minimize negative ones.

Energy Wealth And Governance In The Caucasus And Central Asia written by Richard Auty and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-21 with Political Science categories.

Drawing upon recent progress in development economics and political science, the book provides fresh analysis of the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries transition to a market economy by tracing the impact of natural resource endowment. The book examines the synergies between energy-rich and energy-poor states and highlights the practical consequences of both well-managed and poorly-managed deployment of energy. Featuring contributions from prominent specialists on resource-driven economies, the book argues that unless CCA elites change the way in which they deploy natural resource, revenues regional development will fall short of its potential with possible disastrous consequences. The contributors apply the experience of the developing market economies to demonstrate that the region still holds considerable potential to become an important, stable supplier of raw materials and a source of industrial demand to the global economy. However, the CCA is equally likely to become a threat to the global economy as a consequence of the misuse of energy revenues to promote the interests of predatory political elites.
