Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Media History, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: The existing gap in the trade agreements concerning a "cultural exception" led me to my thesis statement. It proves the role of the CDCE agreement as a symbolic but crucial step towards cultural diversity in the media sector and against the cultural media imperialism of the West. For my analysis, I will choose a cultural approach. This approach is very convenient because the political and economic restrictions that were put in law by the CDCE agreement all affected cultural exchanges and supported cultural industries of developing countries. Assisting the developing countries in building up their own media systems to promote cultural expression is an important mechanism of the agreement, which helps to reduce the cultural inequality. The influence of liberalistic structures on culture grew because of international trade agreements like the WTO or the GATT. Thus, the CDCE agreement is seen as a movement against these liberalistic structures and tends to provide restrictions for cultural industries. Due to the restrictions that are set up to protect the cultural sector, debates about the limitation of the free flow of information increased. The former foreign minister Rice expressed her concern by saying that the Convention could be misused to justify a restriction of the free flow of information. The question if the resolutions of the CDCE are able to limit the free flow of information or if they are even an encouraging measure for a more diverse flow of information, is one of the topics that I will analyse in the following main part. In addition, I will look at the capacity of the CDCE agreement to establish media structures in the developing countries to provide an equivalent distribution of cultural products.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: Distinction, Royal Holloway, University of London, language: English, abstract: This dissertation endeavors to examine the existence of cultural imperialism in 21st century film on India. Evaluating two films, the British film "Slumdog Millionaire" and the Indian film "Swades", this study attempts to consider both perspectives of the ‘other’. A subordinate representation of Indian education, culture and women in "Slumdog Millionaire" continues the imperial attitude towards India. Although signs of a national culture are present in the film "Swades", the Indian film also contributes to the existence of cultural imperialism. This is done by sustaining the imperial attitude through representations of alienation towards the Indian identity. Scholars Edward W. Said and Gayatri Spivak help in the analyses of subordinate representation in the British film. Similarly, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o and Frantz Fanon form the basis for the analyses of alienation and national culture in the Indian film. Although varying in opinion, these authors have come together in this study to highlight the presence of cultural imperialism in contemporary films on India.

Essay from the year 2002 in the subject Politics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1, San Francisco State University (Ethnic Studies), course: AAS 710 Seminar: Critical Approaches, language: English, abstract: Ever since their arrival in the United States, Asians have been attributed certain characteristics in order to maintain the hegemony of the dominant culture. Nowadays, there are certainly many examples for the relationship between representations of Asian Americans and hegemonic racial projects. Among them, there are two which, I believe, deserve special attention: the myth of Asian Americans as the “model minority, ” and the belief that Asian Americans are spies of China. The “model minority” myth says that Asian Americans are high achievers who work very hard but never complain. As a consequence, they have managed to solve all the major problems within their ethnic minority group and, therefore, do not need any help from the government. However, advocates of this image of Asian Americans tend to overlook the fact that among Asian Americans poverty is much higher than in the general population. Moreover, they do not see that Asian Americans have limited job opportunities because many of those in the country right now are recent immigrants with poor knowledge of English. Furthermore, although the number of college degrees among Asian Americans is higher than the national average, this does not mean that they will more likely be employed in a high, for example managerial, position than whites. Finally, the fact that Asian Americans are terribly underrepresented in the government is not taken into account at all.

Project Report from the year 2020 in the subject History - Africa, grade: 1,0, , language: English, abstract: This paper reviews the after-colonial relationship between African countries and more developed states and discusses whether Africa is trapped in imperialism, more precisely in neo-colonialism. To answer this question, I took a look into the characteristics of neo-colonialism and how more developed states influence Africa, for instance, its decision-making. Finally, I examined the effects of neo-colonialism and how it shapes our impression of Africa. Colonialism in Africa already started back in the time when Arabs invaded Africa in the 7th century, but they mostly stayed in the northern parts of the said continent, above the Sahara. By bringing in the religion Islam, the Arabs had major influences on the African continent . Moreover, through building trading posts at the eastern coast of Africa, they connected the continent to the Indian Ocean Trading Complex, which stretched from China, over India, to Africa. African natural resources, and even slaves, were exported and Indian textiles were imported .

Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,7, Macquarie University, course: Media Cultures, language: English, abstract: Advertising on Television is still the most common and significant way of transporting messages to people and particularly to children in view of affecting their intent to buy. The Nielsen Media Research found out that, very young children as early as age two, watch television more than three hours per day, (1998, in Singer & Singer, 2001, p.15) which makes the subject of how children understand advertising messages and what they do with these messages an important topic. The producers of advertising campaigns have still noticed the importance of children as a target group and the significant influence on their parents’ purchases. Furthermore children are “consumers of tomorrow”, consequently companies have to create awareness of their products and create preferences as well as brand loyalty in the very early stages of children’s consumerism. Therefore it is an interesting topic to consider if commercials have an effect on children and if so, what they do with these messages. It is important to focus on the factors which have an influence on building up the mind of children. However, since this topic is very complex and the opinions differ, it is not possible to point out one general point of view. Every child is an individual with a different family background and an individual behaviour. Firstly it is significant to look at some general properties of a successful campaign and the increasing influence of children on their parents purchase. To find an assertion why children are strongly influenced, it will be briefly looked at how many advertisings an average child watched. Furthermore, another crucial point is how and to which extent television advertising does influence children on their brand perceptions. This essay will discuss how children understand television advertising and what they do with the message they get from it. For that reason it is essential to know and analyse the process of consumer socialization which will be mentioned afterwards. It will be considered how the family, the school, peer groups and the mass media influence a child.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, course: Marketing Ethics, language: English, abstract: In this study, the examination revolves around three main issues which include ethics, advertising and social media effects. Ethics basically refers to moral principles which control an individual behavior with respect to activities carried out. Alternatively, advertising refers to method by which sellers communicate to buyers in the market. The study will look at ethics in advertising as a way to govern communication between buyers and sellers. In addition, the study will examine the effects of social media on ethics in advertising (Ibrahim, 2008). When talking about ethics in advertising, it refers to well defined principles upon which communication between buyers and sellers is governed. Therefore, this implies that ethic is classified as an important tool in the advertising industry. Advertising has many benefits; however, certain points employed don’t match the required ethical norms.
