Professor Nalbone examines censorship practices during Francoist Spain in this in-depth analysis of archival documents that construct a narrative around the publication process of literary works. From the outline of legislative practices to the implementation of those practices, this study-grounded in censorship theories-is the first of its kind to present a taxonomy of the results of censorial evaluation that ranged from authorization to publish texts, authorization to publish texts as tolerable, authorization to publish texts with revisions, and suppression of texts not authorized for publication. Nalbone includes examples of each of these four outcomes to elucidate the practices and perspectives of censorship legislation. Nalbone's analysis of each of the novels in this study and her interpretation of the content of the censorship files create a culturally rich portrait of the authors' experiences and perspectives that shed light on the relationship between fiction and reality.

This volume provides a detailed description of the literary contact between Graham Greene and Franco’s Spain. Part I describes the most significant political events that affected the Spanish book industry under this regime, with the first chapter offering an account of the methods of control created to exercise authoritative influence over the cultural scene. Part II explores critical studies of Greene’s artistic output in Franco’s Spain, and the second chapter investigates literary critics’ evaluations of the author as published in the national press, magazines and journals, as well as in the prologues, introductions and prefaces to his books. Parts III and IV study the role played by the book industry in the reception of the writer in Spain, as well as the obstacles it faced at the censorship office. Accordingly, chapters three to six provide the names of the publishers and booksellers who attempted to disseminate his work throughout the country. Using the censorship files, these chapters measure with great precision publishers’ interest in Greene’s works, and establish the power Franco’s censorship wielded over the reception of his literature in Spain. This is a comprehensive study of the impact of censorship on theatre in twentieth-century Spain. This volume brings together twelve essays which explore European censorship of English literature in the last century. Taking into consideration the various social, political and historical contexts in which literary controls were imposed and the extent to which they were determined by national and international concerns, these essays comment on political and moral censorship, self-censorship, and the role of the translator as censor. Besides systematic state control, other hidden and insidious forms of censorship are also surveyed in the essays. This study considers why certain works and authors, many of them now regarded as canonical, were targeted in various states and often under opposing ideologies, such as those dominated by conservative Catholic morality and those governed by communism or socialism. The essays contain previously unpublished material, cover a wide range of authors – including Beckett, Eliot, Joyce and Orwell – and analyse diverse censorship systems operating across Europe, thus serving as a useful comparative resource. Despite the variety of structures of suppression, the study shows that certain common practices can be discerned across national borders and that general conclusions can be drawn about the complex and ambiguous nature of the state’s relationship with culture and about the immediate and long-term impact of censorship, not only on the author and publisher but on society as a whole. Finally, the essays are also significant for what they tell us about the survival of literature, despite the best efforts of the censors.
