The African experience is a compelling theme that will continue to inspire great books of this nature. From Mali, Kanem-Bornu, Sokoto, Benin, Opobo to Arochukwu the stories are the same, of empires and kingdoms systematically broken up and destroyed by the West and ultimately rendered puerile and irrelevant. For centuries, Africa was mindlessly plundered and impoverished by the West. It is a historical fact that while the slaves from Africa were used to power the industrial revolution in Europe and the high yields in the plantations of the Americas, African societies remained neglected and plundered so much so that up to the present time they still manifest all the vagaries of underdevelopment. Aro kingdom had attained great height prior to the monumental destruction, trauma and dislocation occasioned by the British expedition of 1902 and several other problems arising from slavery and colonialism.

Commemorating Muslims In The First World War Centenary written by Meghan Tinsley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-22 with Social Science categories.

Commemorating Muslims in the First World War Centenary engages with the explosion of public commemorations in Britain and France in the wake of the First World War centenary, alongside the hyper-visibility of British and French Muslims in political and popular discourse. Bringing these two phenomena together, it draws on national commemorations of the First World War centenary in Britain and France, alongside eleven local field sites that foregrounded Muslims, to make sense of how national memory changes when it seeks to include a previously excluded group. Through an identification of three distinct narratives, which correspond to three ways of situating Muslims in relation to the nation—mourning, mobilisation, and melancholia—it intervenes in debates surrounding memory, nationhood, and belonging to make sense of the centenary as an extended exercise in nation-building at a moment when the borders of British and French national identity were openly, and violently, contested. With particular attention to sites of melancholia, the author shows how certain sites disrupt national memory and refrain from producing any cohesive narrative to repair that which has been fractured. An exploration of the ways in which commemoration pushes nations to grapple with their past and present, without prescribing any tidy solution, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology and anthropology with interests in memory studies, nationalism and postcolonial studies.

Thomas Merton And The New World written by Paul R. Dekar and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-01 with Religion categories.

‘Merton still matters’, writes Paul R. Dekar about Cistercian monk Thomas Merton. Calling people to act justly, love kindness and walk humbly, Merton used his contemplative practice to see beyond what disrupts and divides us from one another to find the truth of our common humanity - unity in our creation in the image of God. In Thomas Merton and the New World, Dekar focuses primarily on two issues of concern to our current world. First, he studies Merton’s warnings of the abuse that stems from unmindful and irresponsible use of technology, and its ecological devastation. Second, he examines Merton’s thinking on racial injustice in the mid-1960s through his correspondence with his allies and contemporaries - James Baldwin, for example. Using Micah 6:8 to arrange Merton’s focus on justice, lovingkindness, and humility, with input from Merton’s dialogue with Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Rachel Carson and others, Dekar demonstrates just how prophetic and transferable Merton’s teachings remain.

Thomas Merton: God’s Messenger on the Road towards a New World highlights the contribution of the best-selling North American writer between the Second World War and 1968. The Cistercian monk called people to act justly, love kindness, and walk humbly. By his critique of technology, a major impediment for people to follow Jesus; by his writing on contemplative prayer; by his interfaith outreach; and through his witness against racism, war, and degradation of nature, Merton still matters. This book uses Micah 6:8 to organize Merton’s focus on justice, lovingkindness, and humility, as well as his dialogue with Rachel Carson, Ernesto Cardinal, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thich Nhat Hahn, and others.

The Messages of its Walls and Fields seeks to understand the culture of each decade of the School's development. The focus is on the boys themselves, but Katharine Thornton also evaluates the policies of succeeding Councils of Governors and the achievements of the thirteen Headmasters who have led Saints from 1847 to 2009. The curriculum story is here, the context for advocating sport, the emergence of the external activities of the co-curriculum, the values of a Saints' education, the background to each building project, the economy of the School, drama and the arts, science and new laboratories, the ambience of stone, trees and green lawn at the heart of a Saints' experience. St Peter's College graduates have made signifi cant contributions to the life of South Australia, in the professions, in social values, in politics, in sport and in the arts. The history of South Australia must include a knowledge of this School. Here it is in twenty chapters and hundreds of illustrations, not just an entertainment for a week but a reliable record for a lifetime.
