Excerpt from The Century of Columbus In a previous book, The Thirteenth Greatest of Centuries, I described the period of human activity in which, as it appears to me, more was accomplished that is of significance in the expression of what is best in man and for the development of humanity than during any corresponding period of the world's history. To many people it may now seem that I am setting up a rival to the Thirteenth Century in what is here called The Century of Columbus, the period from 1450 to 1550. I may as a foreword say, then, that there is no thought of that and that I still feel quite sure that the Thirteenth is the Great est of Centuries, though it must be admitted that probably more supremely great men were at work in Columbus' Cen tury than in the preceding period. The Thirteenth Century is greatest, however, because its achievements were more widely diffused in their influence and because more of man kind had the opportunity and the incentive to bring out the highest that was in them, than at any other period in the world's history. As a consequence a greater proportion of mankind was happy than ever before or since, for happiness comes only with the consciousness of good work done and the satisfaction of personal achievement. And that is the greatest period of human history when man is the happiest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Life of Christopher Columbus The city of Genoa was still a mighty power in the Mediterranean when the great discoverer, Christopher Columbus, was born, towards the middle of the fifteenth century. Its highest state of prosperity passed away with the fall of Constantinople, when its factories in the Crimea, at Pera, and in the Levant were lost or weakened. But the Republic, though forced to seek protection alternately from France and Milan, continued to be powerful by reason of the enterprise and maritime skill of her sailors, the ability of her merchants, and the credit of her bank of St. George. Less formidable and less independent than in the previous two centuries, the beautiful city was still the chief centre of Mediter ranean trade, and was never more full of intellectual activity. But since 1421 the Republic had been under the protection of the Duke of Milan. The Genoese were thus drawn into the contest for the succession of Naples. Excerpt from The Life and Times of Christopher Columbus Thus, when the great oriental civilization of India and Egypt seems efl'ete from age, and God wishes to call Asia and the West to a younger, more active, and more stirring civilization, Alexander starts, without well knowing why, from the valleys of Macedonia, taking with him the enthusiasm and the soldiers of Greece and before the terror and glory of his name, the known world becomes one, from the Indus to the extremes of Europe. Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus To show the feelings and opinions of M. Excerpt from The Story of Columbus It is a poor service to relate as history an interesting story that is not true, or to lift an historical figure into a heroism far from his real character. To give the facts as we know them, and to Show Columbus as he really was, has been the Sincere endeavor of the writer of this book. The story is wonderful enough without the embellishment of fiction the man is interesting enough when painted in his real colors. Excerpt from A Life of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus is a figure in history which presents all the variations, the shiftings, the many-colored lights of a kaleidescope. He has no fixed name in the language of the nation. He is Columbus, Columbo, Colon, Colonus; he is Christoval Colon, and Christo pher Columbus. He is claimed by the residents of several places as having been born in their respective localities; he was descended from noble fami lies, and his father was a humble wool-comber. He was educated at a' university, he assisted his father in his lowly occupation. He was a student, a wool-comber, and a sailor at the immature age of fourteen years. 'he was familiar with geography, and yet, as the facts subsequently established, he scarcely knew its simplest rudiments. These are only a few of the contrarieties in his life as recorded in his tory. He discovered America, and yet he did noth ing of the kind. This Northern half of the American Continent is about to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of a discovery which he never made. The enormous region known as North America, he did not discover, he never even dreamed of its existence. He did not undertake his voyage influenced by the slightest idea that a new world was to be found; it was a different approach to an old world, India, that he sought, and he died in the belief that it was the coasts of India that he had encountered; hence the name West Indies given to the islands that confronted him as he sailed westward.
