The past few years have been very traumatic ones for many Nigerians. With the exception of those in power or close to the seat of power, the changes of 1998 were a welcome relief given the tyranny and repression that the country had suffered under General Abacha. With many people in prison and more in exile, the death of Abacha was received with a sigh of relief. Many observers have seen the resilience that has come to signify the strength and potential of this once 'giant of Africa', as well as the destruction and the socio-political and economic decay of the past decades. The Nigerian people have endured the exploitation of their rights due to the lack of democratic leadership, and with this in mind, they have been called to attention to fight for their country.

It is two decades since the ‘third wave’ of democratization began to roll across sub-Saharan Africa in the early 1990s. This book provides a very timely investigation into the progress and setbacks over that period, the challenges that remain and the prospects for future democratization in Africa. It commences with an overall assessment of the (lack of) progress made from 1990 to 2010, exploring positive developments with reasons for caution. Based on original research, subsequent contributions examine various themes through country case-studies, inclusive of: the routinisation of elections, accompanied by democratic rollback and the rise of hybrid regimes; the tenacity of presidential powers; the dilemmas of power-sharing; ethnic voting and rise of a violent politics of belonging; the role of ‘donors’ and the ambiguities of ‘democracy promotion’. Overall, the book concludes that steps forward remain greater than reversals and that typically, though not universally, sub-Saharan African countries are more democratic today than in the late 1980s. Nonetheless, the book also calls for more meaningful processes of democratization that aim not only at securing civil and political rights, but also socio-economic rights and the physical security of African citizens. This book was originally published as a special issue of Democratization

This is a timely book on political transition to civil rule in Nigeria. The socio-political and economic ramifications of the transfer of power to an elected civilian administration and the political chaos resulting from the continued uncertainties surrounding the transition program are examined. Some of the topics which are touched upon are the relationship between the state, capital accumulation, democratic forces, the characteristic political manipulation by the military and the attempt to hold on to power despite demand for civilian democratic rule, the problem of military intervention to the question of national integration, and the core problems of Nigerian economic management and the alternatives for effective management of the Nigerian economy in the Third Republic.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, language: English, abstract: The paper looks at some of the problems negating the democratization efforts in Nigeria. Using the descriptive method of data gathering, the paper identifies Corruption, Partisan umpire and security agencies, Electoral Violence and Malpractices, Poverty, High cost of governance/Jumbo pay for public officers, etc as the threats and challenges facing the nascent democracy. It is recommended that citizenship education be made a compulsory subject in all the schools as well as strengthening the National Orientation Agency to change the avaricious attitude of Nigerians. Across the globe, many countries want to be seen as being democratic. It is a political arrangement that builds or consolidates an egalitarian society with the full participation of all the adult citizens in a free and fair periodic election, with at least two political parties. This has been seamlessly achieved in civilized climes like the USA, UK, France and even Ghana of yesterday. There are several impediments to this noble concept in Nigeria, hence many political analysts are of the view that some countries in Africa are practicing civilian rule which is far away from democracy. Poverty is one of them. A hungry person can mortgage his or her future for a token commonly referred to as stomach infrastructure to do what is inimical to democracy. Some staff of the electoral umpire can declare a loser of an election as a winner after receiving gratification. Security agencies who are supposed to maintain law and order during elections are now ominously partisan. The jumbo pay for the executive and the legislature in Nigeria has dwarfed the benefits of democracy. Poor justice delivery due to compromise on the part of judges leads to the rule of men rather than the rule of law. There can never be democracy without the rule of law. Electoral violence in some African States,
