This book is an in depth analysis of the challenges of presenting and preaching Christ in the context of a postmodern culture in crisis with specific reference to Great Britain. The study analyses: The modern period and the rise of postmodern culture and the main tenets of postmodernism. The challenges of preaching and presenting an accurate Christology in a postmodern culture in crisis. A brief history of Christology and preaching. The historical Jesus and the postmodern Jesus. This study will look at different postmodern ways of preaching and presenting Christ in a postmodern culture in crisis like Great Britain. This book is a contribution towards finding ways of overcoming the challenges presented by a postmodern culture to the Christian faith in Great Britain. One of the tenets of a postmodern mind is seeking for a supernatural or paranormal experience. Many evangelical churches and denominations are in a state of plateau or decline. Why aren't Pentecostals? One of the most asked questions is, In a world where the church seems to be declining in many areas, how are the Pentecostals are bucking the trend? The Pentecostals emphasise supernatural encounter with a living God. Could this be the reason why the Pentecostal movement is growing at an alarming rate? The Pentecostals have an upper hand in preaching to a postmodern society because of their belief in experience, practicality and a personal encounter with God. This has led to a revival of Christianity in most parts of third world countries. We cannot change the fundamental truth of the word of God but we can change the way we present that truth.

Starting with some observations relating to shifts in ecclesiology and identifying them as a move beyond contextualization to syncretism this work goes on to assess the feasibility of preaching in a postmodern culture which rejects both the idea of absolute truth and authority used as power. It traces the historical and philosophical development of postmodernism. The Enlightenment project is deemed to have failed and Christianity is perceived as an oppressive metanarrative. In a world that is becoming increasingly sceptical and where preaching practitioners are becoming disillusioned this book offers some guidelines about preaching to postmoderns. In a relational age rationality is impotent, but the author distinguishes between authoritative and authoritarian preaching allowing hope for the survival of the homiletic task. Humility is presented as preferable to certitude and persuasion is redefined. The author suggests using an inductive mode of communication as a means of engaging postmodern listeners. He signposts a way forward in the labyrinthine complexity of the new paradigm and demonstrates that the homiletic task is still feasible. Thus this book will be of interest to teachers and students of theology as well as pastors desiring to develop a new apologetic strategy.

"In a world in which absolute truth, values and authority have lost their place, the evangelical church needs most of all to be a beacon of truth and light. Yet the relativistic mindset of our culture is seeping in, pushing aside biblical content to make way for personal experience even in churches that once held firmly to the doctrines of the faith. The result, a watered-down Gospel, is having little impact on society or individual lives. It is a challenge that must not go unmet. In A Confessing Theology for Postmodern Times, twelve confessing Christian scholars from various denominational backgrounds provide you with ideas and strategies for rising to that challenge. They explore your resources for " doing" theology in a postmodern world, as well as the obstacles and the opportunities it entails. There is a crisis of truth in the world. This volume is evidence that you "can reach out to those who need the life-changing message of the Gospel and still hold firm to a systematic, biblical theology in postmodern times."--! How does one preach to a congregation immersed in a postmodern culture outside the church, but often finding itself in another culture within its walls? Do the postmodern criticisms offer any opportunities to the preacher for addressing the great truths of Scripture in new and fresh ways? Robert Kysar and Joseph M. Webb, both scholar-preachers, believe that they do. Preaching to Postmoderns: New Perspectives for Proclaiming the Message seeks to inform and encourage pastors who want to expand their horizons. Webb and Kysar have addressed the need for pastors to understand the staggering numbers of new approaches to Biblical interpretation and the bewildering choices for sermon preparation that they represent. In this book, they offer introductions to each of the major types of interpretive methods and point out the implications for each in preparing a sermon. They successfully move the theories of Biblical interpretation out of the ivory tower and into the pastor's study. To exemplify how each of the major methods impact the preaching task, they offer a sample sermon for each method. while demonstrating what difference it makes for preachers as they seek to use the various methods.

Mark Noll has written a major indictment of American evangelicalism. Reading this book, one wonders if the evangelical movement has pandered so much to American culture and tried to be so popular only to lose not only it's mind but it's soul as well. For evangelical pastors and parishoners alike, this is a must read! --Robert Wuthnow.

Reclaiming and proclaiming the Christian heritage- Fewer people today are familiar with the vital theological ideas from the Christian tradition. Preaching about the continuing relevance and richness of this heritage is one of the pastor's most important responsibilities in this age of relativities. Robert Hughes and Robert Kysar show how this situation has come about and offer imaginative and empowering suggestions for proclaiming Christianity's profoundest truths to a new generation. "Preaching Doctrine is a delightfully clear and helpful re-introduction to the theological art of preaching. Hughes and Kysar bring a rare mix of theological, practical, and biblical wisdom to bear on the weekly task of proclamation. Their reflections provide the working pastor with an easily digested compendium of homiletical theory for the postmodern era. I will use this book." -Richard Lischer Duke Divinity School "Hughes and Kysar show us how, with imagination and imaginal language, to re-mint traditional biblical and theological coinage for new purchasing power in human consciousness. And they do it with clarity and integrity." -Don Wardlaw McCormick Theological Seminary Robert Kysar is Bandy Professor Emeritus of Preaching and New Testament at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and an ordained ELCA pastor.
