The American Civil War had been raging since 1861. In the eastern theatre of the war, the Confederate forces - under the brilliant leadership of Robert E. Many historians give William Sherman total credit for the success of the Atlanta Campaign, when in fact it was the success of the Federal team as an institution. Conversely, many blame Joseph Johnston for the Confederate loss in that campaign, when in fact he was only one cog in the Confederate war machine. It was beyond Johnston ‘s ability to adapt if President Jefferson Davis and the rest of the Confederate team failed in fulfilling their duties. More importantly, the Federal team adapted during the middle of the war. In short they were able to transform the way they fought the war. The Confederates in the west were never able to do the same.

This book is an historical analysis of the Union artillery at the Battle of Gettysburg. It examines the significance of the Union artillery’s contribution to the Federal victory. This study explores all aspects of the tactical employment of the Union artillery on the first and last days of the battle. A brief description of the evolution of artillery organization in the Army of the Potomac prior to the battle of Gettysburg is included. This is followed by the chronological presentation of the tactical employment of artillery during the battle. First its employment in the meeting engagement on 1 July is examined, followed by a study of its use on the final and decisive third day when Union forces fought a set-piece defensive battle. Among the conclusions arrived at during the course of this study are these: that the Army of the Potomac’s corps artillery brigades and army artillery reserve proved to be responsive and efficient organizations in fulfilling their fire support mission, and when coupled with the skillful use of artillery and aggressive leadership by the army’s Chief-of-Artillery, Brigadier-General Hunt, were crucial to the successful employment of the Union artillery forces. This study concludes that the Union artillery under the command of Brigadier General Henry Hunt had a decided and positive influence on the Federal victory by successfully employing its corps artillery brigades and army artillery reserve as part of a combined arms force.

The brutal occupation of Baltimore in 1861 by the Federal troops under Benjamin “Beast” Butler, would be the final straw for many Confederate leaning Marylanders. One such was Harry Gilmor, imprisoned for his political beliefs and his service in the Baltimore County Horse Guards, he was determined to join the Southern forces. As soon as he was released from prison he travelled as fast as possible to join the troops under Colonel Turner Ashby; by March 1862 he was commissioned as a captain of the Twelfth Virginia Cavalry. He set to his task with a passion earning much glory fighting under Jackson in the Valley campaign, even being entrusted with special missions by the great general himself. His military star was on the rise and he began to gain a sterling reputation as a cavalry commander often employed in scouting, raids and ambushes. He was in action at the Battle of Brandy Station, in the Shenandoah Valley and led the famous “Raid Round Baltimore” in 1864. Despite all his cunning and daring the tide of war turned against him and his Confederate comrades and he was captured in February 1865 in Hardy County. As a successful Confederate raider the Federal press had heaped calumnies upon him and his men, so after the war he wrote these memoirs to set the record straight.
