Many people have fallen in love with the original 1908 edition of The Character of Jesus as a resource that creates and reinforces their love and awe for the person Jesus Christ. Numerous Christians prize Dr. Jefferson's work as one of their favorite books and as a source for reinvigorating their faith. This paraphrased edition of the book makes this great work more available to today's readers (including younger readers) who might find early 20th-century language and events harder to comprehend. This edition is very useful for personal character studies that not only show the perfection of Jesus Christ, but create personal convictions in the reader to aspire to those same 26 characters traits. With the aid of an AI tool and some additional editing, we have been able to "re-write" the book to a 9th-grade reading level "paraphrase." (By comparison, the NIV Bible is written in a 7th -grade reading level.) We have endeavored to maintain the spirit of the book, while updating some of the content in order to make the work consistent with modern wording and references. This book is recommended to anyone wishing to know Jesus better and so to aspire to have Jesus' heart and character.

PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

"This edited volume brings Ahn Byung-Mu's minjung theology into dialogue with twenty-first-century readers. Ahn Byung-Mu was one of the pioneers of Korean minjung theology. The centerpiece of his minjung theology is focused on the Greek word ochlos, understood as the divested, marginalized, powerless people. Part 1 introduces readers to his life and theological legacy. Part 2 includes four important writings of Ahn Byung-Mu: ""Jesus and Minjung in the Gospel of Mark,"" ""Minjung Theology in the Gospel of Mark,"" ""The Transmitters of Jesus Event Tradition,"" and ""Minjok, Minjung, and Church."" Part 3 contains a collection of articles from international scholars who evaluate and engage Ahn's ochlos/minjung theology in their own fields and formulate critical readings of minjung theology. Responses include postcolonial, black theology, and feminist perspectives. "

In this new introduction to the Apostle Paul and his gospel, written especially for lay readers, for beginning students, and for those unsure about what to make of Paul, Michael J. Gorman takes the apostle seriously, as someone who speaks for God and to us. After an overview not only of Paul's radical transformation from persecutor to proclaimer but also of his letter-writing in the context of Paul's new mission, Reading Paul explores the central themes of the apostle's gospel: Gorman places special emphasis on the theopolitical character of Paul's gospel and on the themes of cross and resurrection, multiculturalism in the church, and peacemaking and nonviolence as the way of Christ according to Paul. Gorman also offers a distinctive interpretation of justification by faith as participation in Christ--an interpretation that challenges standard approaches to these Pauline themes. Reading Paul demonstrates that the apostle of faith, hope, and love speaks not only to our deepest spiritual needs but also to the challenging times in which we live.

The Gospel of John heralds a unique call to discipleship. Unlike any other Gospel, the Fourth Gospel offers a multitude of benefits for following Jesus. John promises that discipleship is rewarded with adoption by the Father, royal friendship with the Son, and abiding with the Father and the Son through the Spirit. Nearly two dozen additional benefits fall under these three main categories as John persuades his readers to continuous belief in Jesus. Follow Me: The Benefits of Discipleship in the Gospel of John traces these rewards as incentives for disciples to remain loyal to Jesus in the context of hostility and opposition, in all times and all places, no matter the cost.

Jesus' identity is not simply "out there" to be discovered scientifically. Jesus' identity is shaped historically in believers' experience with him. Interpretation of Jesus of Nazareth, the significance of Jesus Christ, and Christian identity operate and interact in the same fashion as the hermeneutical circle. These elements simultaneously call forth and justify themselves and each other. This book addresses twenty-first-century Christians who are challenged intellectually and spiritually to read the Gospels' story of Jesus in light of what contemporary scholarship offers for understanding the first-century prophet from Nazareth. The invaluable move from precritical and dogmatic readings to rigorous historical-critical readings is applauded. But contemporary Christians are not convinced by approaches that begin with negative assumptions about the suitability of Christian sources for construction of the story of Jesus because of the bias of those sources. In a postmodern epoch, our critical reductionist approach to history is absorbed in a more satisfying and comprehensive approach. The data and relational sequences discovered by "modern" categories of historiography are enriched by a higher ordering, a mentality that includes but is not limited to our charting. Book jacket.
