"There is a compelling story to be told about the rise, fall, and transfiguration of the ideal of chastity, and Lisabeth During is the perfect person to tell it. In The Chastity Plot, During reveals how the obsession with chastity has played a powerful role in the history of our moral imagination. The metaphysics of purity continue to haunt literature, religion, and philosophy. The demand for chastity has shaped social institutions and figured in the construction of political power; sexual renunciation has been an ornament to sainthood and a technique of ascetics both sacred and profane"--

In The Chastity Plot, Lisabeth During tells the story of the rise, fall, and transformation of the ideal of chastity. From its role in the practice of asceticism to its associations with sovereignty, violence, and the purity of nature, it has been loved, honored, and despised. Obsession with chastity has played a powerful and disturbing role in our moral imagination. It has enforced patriarchy’s double standards, complicated sexual relations, and imbedded in Western culture a myth of gender that has been long contested by feminists. Still not yet fully understood, the chastity plot remains with us, and the metaphysics of purity continue to haunt literature, religion, and philosophy. Idealized and unattainable, sexual renunciation has shaped social institutions, political power, ethical norms, and clerical abuses. It has led to destruction and passion, to seductive fantasies that inspired saints and provoked libertines. As During shows, it should not be underestimated. Examining literature, religion, psychoanalysis, and cultural history from antiquity through the middle ages and into modernity, During provides a sweeping history of chastity and insight into its subversive potential. Instead of simply asking what chastity is, During considers what chastity can do, why we should care, and how it might provide a productive disruption, generating new ways of thinking about sex, integrity, and freedom.

Although widely divergent in cultural traditions, Chinese and European Literatures share similar attitudes toward feminine chastity. For this reason, the first Chinese novel to be translated into a European language, Hau Ch'iu Chuan, known in English as The Fortunate Union, was widely acclaimed in England, France and Germany. Parallels in plot, tone, and moral attitudes are to be found in Richardson's Clarissa, Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield, and Manzoni's I promessi sposi.

Jurisprudence Of Jurisdiction written by Shaun Mcveigh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-12 with Law categories.

For much of the history of the western legal order, jurisdiction has been the first question of law. This book investigates the difference that jurisdiction continues to make to the ordering of normative existence. It also follows the speculation that without an account of jurisdiction, jurisprudence would be left speechless, with no power to address the conditions of attachment to legal and political order. The starting point of this book lies with the claim that a sharper focus can be given to normative legal ordering through questions of jurisdiction than can be through those of moral responsibility or social action. This is so because jurisdiction articulates both the potentiality of law and the conditions of its exercise. It provides the idiom of response to the fact that there is law and to the fact that law institutes, judges and addresses a form of life. From this viewpoint the contributors to this book examine the institution of human rights, the new global and national orders of sovereign power and of trade and information, the judgment and government of death and desire, and the address of colonial and post-colonial legal idioms. In doing this the contributors also provide for the elaboration of questions of jurisdiction as part of the resources and repertoires of jurisprudence. This book provides a point of entry to an emergent genre of writing within doctrinal, historical and critical jurisprudence that has returned to questions of jurisdiction to think again about juridical order and change. In so doing, it also points to questions that must be asked for there to be any interdisciplinary study that addresses law.

The Fallen Angel written by Sally Mitchell and has been published by Popular Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with Fiction categories.

Discusses the figure of the unchaste woman in a wide range of fiction written between 1835 and 1880, including serious novels by Dickens, Mrs. Gaskell, and George Eliot; popular novels that provided light reading for middle-class women; sensational fiction; propaganda for social reform; and stories in cheap periodicals which reached a different and far wider audience than either serious or popular novels. During these years, some women were struggling to become women, instead of the angels of purity that sentimental morality had made of them. The sexual woman, the whore, the mistress, the runaway wife, the seduced or fallen innocent, all attracted a cluster of ideas about the differences between women and men, about the power structure in sexual relationships, and about women's place in the social and moral world. In considering these topics, this book traces women and illuminates differences in the fiction writer for different social classes. -- Publisher description

Representations Of The Orient In Western Music written by Nasser Al-Taee and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Music categories.

This book focuses on the cultural, political and religious representations of the Orient in Western music. Dr Nasser Al-Taee traces several threads in a vast repertoire of musical representations, concentrating primarily on the images of violence and sensuality. Al-Taee argues that these prevailing traits are not only the residual manifestation of the Ottoman threat to Western Europe, but also the continuation of a long and complex history of fear and fascination towards the Orient and its Islamic religion. In addition to analyses of musical works, Al-Taee draws on travel accounts, paintings, biographies, and political events to engage with important issues such as gender, race, and religious differences that may have contributed to the variously complex images of the Orient in Western music. The study extends the range of Orientalism to cover eighteenth-century Austria, nineteenth-century Russia, and twentieth-century America. The book challenges those scholars who do not see Orientalism as problematic and tend to ignore the role of musical representations in shaping the image of the Other within a wider interdisciplinary study of knowledge and power.
