Excerpt from The Child and the Curriculum There is another study in which I am engaged, which is still more tedious and perplexing - to make myself master of all the rules of a hundred different kinds of verses, and of all the musical modulations of words and syllables. After deploring the lack of able teachers, he continues It would far exceed the bounds of a familiar letter to explain this matter fully, to lay open all the secrets of that art of metre, concerning letters, syllables, poetic feet and figures, verses, tones, time, &0. Add to this the doctrine of the seven divisions of poetry with all their variations, and what number of feet every different kind of verse must consist of. The Child and the Curriculum By John Dewey The Child and the Curriculum Profound differences in theory are never gratuitous or invented. They grow out of conflicting elements in a genuine problem-a problem which is genuine just because the elements, taken as they stand, are conflicting. Any significant problem involves conditions that for the moment contradict each other. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Excerpt from Child Life and Literature The aim of this book is to call the teacher's attention to the choice of material in literature best suited to the nature and needs of elementary school pupils. To this end a gen eral survey is made of the field of child psychology, and a course in reading and literature is developed in harmony with the dominant mental characteristics and natural ih terests of children. It is gratifying to notice a tendency on the part of educa tional authorities to enlarge the school curriculum in liter ature. School readers alone must fail to interest children in reading. Complete units should be presented instead of extracts. Every phase of child life should be reflected; and all material should possess true literary merit. Excerpt from The Child Under Eight The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions Of the best theory and practice in English education of today. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches Of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and Of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which Of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educator's work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. NO artificial uniformity has been sought or imposed, and while the Editor is responsible for the series in general, the responsibility for the opinions expressed in each volume rests solely with its author. The Infant School written by John Charles Gunn and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-13 with categories.

Excerpt from The Infant School: Its Principles and Methods That there is need for a book dealing with the special problems of the Infant School, the writer is strongly convinced. There are two reasons which seem to require that an attempt should be made to deal with these problems at present. In the first place, the Infant School is dealt with in too summary a fashion in most books on School Method, and the importance of its work is by no means adequately represented. In the second place, the general plan on which most School Management text-books are based, that of the Curriculum or subjects of study, is not a plan suited to a discussion of Infant School Management. In the Infant School the central fact for the teacher is not the Curriculum but the Pupil. This, of course, is true of all schools, but its truth is most evident at the initial stages of education. Hence in this book an attempt has been made to discuss education from the central standpoint - the child to be educated. The writer is convinced that this is the only scientific basis for education, and that from this basis must be deduced alike the curriculum and the method. Apart from this basis, education becomes merely an empirical system of rules and traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
