The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia started thanks to a heroic doctor's inspiration, was the first of its kind and still impacts children's lives today. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia opened its doors in 1855 amidst a turbulent time in the city. Dr. Francis West Lewis, a prominent Philadelphia physician, was deeply disturbed by the appallingly high mortality rate among infants and children in his city, a result of the poor sanitary conditions in the urban slums that arose in great numbers during the Industrial Revolution. After visiting London for the opening of Great Ormond Street Hospital, Dr. Lewis was inspired to open the first children's hospital in the United States in Philadelphia and advertised in the Public Ledger, "Reception of children suffering from acute diseases and accidents will be received free of charge." The Children's Hospital continued to prosper and lead the advancement of children's health by creating many of the nation's first pediatric training programs and leading in the discovery of vaccines, lifesaving medical equipment, and pioneering treatments. Today, the hospital enjoys international recognition and continues to contribute to the advancement of children's health through a three-part mission of patient care, education, and research.

The professional development of researchers is critical for the future development ofthe fields of pediatric and clinical child psychology. In order to conduct research in pediatric and clinical child psychology, researchers need to work with a wide range of populations and master an increasingly wide range of skills, many of which are either not formally taught or considered in sufficient depth in clinical training. Such skills include the development of resources for research by writing grants to government agencies and foundations; skills in preparing research for publications concerning original research, review articles, or case reports; scien tific presentation skills; the ability to review and edit scientific manuscripts; and to implement and manage research in applied settings. Moreover, the increasing complexity of research in pediatric and clinical child psychology requires success ful researchers in these fields to develop their expertise with a wide range of new specialized methodologies, data analytic methods, models of data analysis, and methods of assessment. Finally, to enhance the relevance of their research to practice, researchers in pediatric and clinical child psychology need to integrate their work with clinical service delivery programs that are based on empirical research. The necessity to train researchers in pediatric and clinical child psychology in such multifaceted knowledge and skills places extraordinary burdens on profes sional training programs. Professional researchers in pediatric and child clinical psychology also are challenged to develop new knowledge and skills through continuing education and faculty development programs.

Molecular Biology And Pathology Of Paediatric Cancer written by Catherine J. Cullinane and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-11-13 with Medical categories.

There has been an explosion of knowledge and enormous progress in the fundamental understanding of the biology of cancer in recent years. This has included the realisation that cancer occurs when normal cellular functions are disturbed leading to a malignant phenotype. Much research has focussed on understanding the types of disturbances that can occur, the contribution that these abnormalities can make to the development and behaviour of particular cancers and more recently, the recognition that these cellular and genetic abnormalities can provide rational targets for new therapeutic approaches. Information about the biology of cancers that occur in children has increased in parallel with these more general advances and this book is intended to provide a focus for readers who wish to have an understanding of our current state of knowledge. A international group of editors and contributors provide guidelines on the molecular biology and pathology of paediatric oncology, aimed at clinicians and scientists working in the specialty who wish to understand current developments in molecular pathology as applied to their field. The book is a broad ranging review focusing on the impact of molecular and cytogenetic techniques on our understanding of the aetiology, clinical behaviour, diagnosis and management of paediatric cancer. The first section outlines the laboratory handling of tissue samples, theory and methodology of cytogenetic and molecular techniques and discusses predisposition syndromes. The second section highlights the application of cytogenetic and molecular methods in diagnosis and treatment of the major paediatric cancers.

Dr. Jatin P. Shah has brought together contributing authors in a single volume that represents the head and neck management team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The strength of the volume is in its internal consistency of diagnostic approaches, therapeutic decisions, multidisciplinary treatment programs, and surgical techniques. An effort has also been made to be comprehensive and to give a balanced view to other treatment approaches. Essential to the diagnosis and treatment of the disease is the involvement of a multidisciplinary management team of medical experts. Such disease management teams develop treatment algorithms and establish treatment guidelines to unify an approach to maintain internal consistency, initiate investigative protocols, and push the frontiers in the battle against cancer.
