In this book, the authors explore and reconsider the contemporary significance of the Christ and the Bodhisattva. The volume includes essays by three eminent Christian theologians, Langdon Gilkey, Brother David Steindl-Rast, and Ann Belford Ulanov, that explore the significance of the Christ from the perspectives of the Roman Catholic contemplative tradition, modern depth psychology, and liberal Protestantism. Drawing on information previously unavailable in English, three distinguished scholars of Buddhism, Robert Thurman, Luis Gomez, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, investigate the significance of the Bodhisattva in India, East Asian, and Tibet. A substantive introduction sets the historical background for the Christ in Christianity and the Bodhisattva in Buddhism. Contributors' essays enhance our understanding of current presuppositions, problems, and prospects for the Buddhist-Christian dialogue.

Crucified Wisdom written by S. Mark Heim and has been published by Fordham Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-04 with Religion categories.

This work provides the first systematic discussion of the Bodhisattva path and its importance for constructive Christian theology. Crucified Wisdom examines specific Buddhist traditions, texts, and practices not as phenomena whose existence requires an apologetic justification but as wells of tested wisdom that invite theological insight. With the increasing participation of Christians in Buddhist practice, many are seeking a deeper understanding of the way the teachings of the two traditions might interface. Christ and the Bodhisattva are often compared superficially in Buddhist–Christian discussion. This text combines a rich exposition of the Bodhisattva path, using Śāntideva’s classic work the Bodicaryāvatāra and subsequent Tibetan commentators, with detailed reflection on its implications for Christian faith and practice. Author S. Mark Heim lays out root tensions constituted by basic Buddhist teachings on the one hand, and Christian teachings on the other, and the ways in which the Bodhisattva or Christ embody and resolve the resulting paradoxes in their respective traditions. An important contribution to the field of comparative theology in general and to the area of Buddhist–Christian studies in particular, Crucified Wisdom proposes that Christian theology can take direct instruction from Mahāyāna Buddhism in two respects: deepening its understanding of our creaturely nature through no-self insights, and revising its vision of divine immanence in dialogue with teachings of emptiness. Heim argues that Christians may affirm the importance of novelty in history, the enduring significance of human persons, and the Trinitarian reality of God, even as they learn to value less familiar, nondual dimensions of Christ’s incarnation, human redemption, and the divine life. Crucified Wisdom focuses on questions of reconciliation and atonement in Christian theology and explores the varying interpretations of the crucifixion of Jesus in Buddhist–Christian discussion. The Bodhisattva path is central for major contemporary Buddhist voices such as the Dalai Lama and Thích Nhât Hanh, who figure prominently as conversation partners in the text. This work will be of particular value for those interested in “dual belonging” in connection to these traditions.

The centre of gravity of contemporary Christianity has shifted to the southern hemisphere where, with the exception of Latin America, almost all Christians are minorities in their home countries. Christians in Asia live amongst Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Shamanist or Taoist majorities and this context shapes the local Christian theology. The same is true in Africa where traditional religions and beliefs influence African Christians. Central to this change in both Africa and Asia is the creation of a new Jesus, one who accretes local beliefs and concerns and who, in that process, is transformed. 'The Non-Western Jesus' reveals how a new theology - with its own images and concepts - is coming into being. A wide range of embodiments of Jesus is examined: Jesus as 'Avatara' and 'Guru' in the Indian context; as 'Bodhisattva' in the Buddhist context; and Jesus within Asian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, African and Indonesian religious contexts.

Medieval Churchmen heard the legend of Prince Siddhartha (the "Bodhisattva," or "Buddha-to-be") renouncing his wealth and seeking salvation as a monk, but they mistook it for the history of some Christian monk named "Iodasaph" (a corruption of "Bodhisattva"). Iodasaph was canonized as an official saint. The ironic result was that Gautama Buddha is a Roman Catholic saint! What if such a remarkable religious hybrid actually lived? The brief pieces collected in this book depict what he might have taught, proclaiming Buddhism from the Bible! Amazingly, it turns out not to be much of a stretch! Saint Iodasaph will have you reading familiar texts with new (third?) eyes! These vignettes originally appeared in The Christian*New Age Quarterly. One reader asked if they were genuine channeled revelations! That's high praise.

The book now lying in your hands holds a challenge to the Anthroposophical Movement to take up once again the Bodhisattva Question. That question is: In what human being did the Maitreya Bodhisattva appear in the twentieth century? This became a consuming topic of discussion among pupils of Rudolf Steiner during parts of the first half of the twentieth century, both before and after the founding of the Anthroposophical Society. Its significance can be judged by two statements Rudolf Steiner made in 1911: that "humanity must gain the capacity... to see the supersensible Christ, and for that the spiritual scientific movement is there. That is its mission: to create the conditions that bring about an understanding for the Christ, in order then to make it possible to see the Christ;" and that the Maitreya Bodhisattva "will be the real herald of the Christ in etheric raiment."Yet today this question of the identity of the Maitreya and the teachings he gave the world has all but disappeared from the minds of the members of the Anthroposophical Movement, even to the extent that the concept of a bodhisattva is unfamiliar to many.Bodhisattvas, Rudolf Steiner explained, are human beings who follow a path of development different from the rest of humanity. They are at home in the World of Providence, a plane of existence lying between Devachan and Nirvana. Twelve of them gather around the Christ and receive from Him the impulses that they bring in turn as teachings to humanity. Bodhisattvas are not born into bodies as are the rest of humanity, but incorporate into a human bearer, as the Christ incorporated into Jesus of Nazareth at the Jordan. The Bodhisattva Question is therefore one of finding which historical personality became the bearer of the Bodhisattva in the twentieth century. At the end of his path of teaching humanity over many incorporations, a bodhisattva becomes enlightened and is elevated to buddhahood; so it was that, in the sixth century B.C., the Gautama Bodhisattva became the Gautama Buddha. Since that time, the bodhisattva who has been most active within humanity, incorporating once every hundred years, is the Maitreya Bodhisattva. His particular task, as Rudolf Steiner indicated, is leading humanity towards an experience of the Etheric Christ.Already in 1909, Rudolf Steiner underscored the importance of knowing and understanding what the bodhisattvas have to say who follow the Christ, the first of them being the Maitreya.Rudolf Steiner spoke of the Maitreya Bodhisattva often between 1909 and 1912, the period during which he was also speaking about the return of the Christ in the etheric. Among much else about the Maitreya, Rudolf Steiner said, "[H]e is also incorporated now." From misinterpretations of that statement have issued some of the many misconceptions and false claims regarding the personality in whom the Maitreya appeared in the twentieth century. This book is an anthroposophic study using spiritual-scientific methodology. The authors analyze the basic ideas and concepts of the two main branches of the 20th century European Esoteric Christianity: Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophic study and the teachings of the Universal White Brotherhood given by the Master Peter Deunov. This book can be thematically referred to the Christian spiritual tradition, freely and scientifically developed in 20th century.

The Bodhicaryavatara ("Entering the Course towards Awakening") is an Indian Mahayana Buddhist companion to the path of a Bodhisattva, someone motivated by the altruistic "spirit of awakening". Unlike many other Buddhist scriptures, much of this text is written in the very touching form of personal reflections. Despite its late composition (7th-8th cent. CE), the Bodhicaryavatara quickly gained widespread recognition and high appraisal in various parts of the Buddhist world and even beyond. Today it is one of the most widely translated Buddhist texts. The 14th Dalai Lama has emphasized the special impact of this scripture on his own spirituality, and a number of Western scholars have praised it as a true gem among the world's religious classics. After many commentaries by Buddhist scholars throughout the centuries, this is the first commentary from a Christian perspective, exploring the deep resonances between the "spirit of awakening" and the "spirit of Christ".
