J.R.R. Tolkien observed that the word Celtic "is a magic bag, into which anything may be put, and out of which almost anything may come ... Anything is possible in the fabulous Celtic twilight, which is not so much a twilight of the gods as of the reason." But in this volume, Ted Olsen digs beneath the layers of romanticization to introduce you to the world of the Celts. Focusing on their interaction with the Christian faith, Olsen tells the stories of principal characters from Ireland and beyond. As he illuminates the missionary fervor and monastic ideals of saints such as Patrick and Columbanus, Olsen brings a distant period of history to vivid life. - Publisher.

Stimulated by the research resulting in his first book on the Celts (In Search of the Celts) the author follows this dynamic race's progress through the first centuries of the Christian era. Targeting primarily teenagers and young adults seeking basic facts on their Christian inheritance, the author briefly summarizes the early development of Christianity in Western Europe. The book is an assembly of sketches on the main movers and shakers, integrated with the astonishing story of the dedicated Christian priests and supporters - all mainly "Irish" - who spearheaded the miraculous revival of Christianity in Western Europe and the British Isles through the fourth to tenth centuries by reconverting a population who had relapsed back into paganism in the face of the vicious Viking assaults of that period. The amazing story tells how a country considered to be backward and illiterate became to be regarded, almost overnight, as offering all young people (male and female alike) the world's best literary and Christian education available in the whole of Western Europe, a reputation it maintained for some eight centuries until the Benedictine and Carthusian monks assumed the crown in the thirteenth century. This book is testimony to the courage, dedication and self-denial of thousands of Irish Celtic Christian priests and their army of supporters.

This lively and original account of early Celtic Christianity - which was of far greater importance in the development of Western culture than we commonly realize - is told against the background of European history of the first seven centuries A.D. It focuses on the lives of Saints Brendan, Columba, and Columbanus, who lived active and effective lives in the cause of the early Church. Brendan, one of the founding fathers of Christianity in Ireland, was known in legend as a voyager and was thought to have reached the Western Hemisphere long before the Vikings. Columba took Celtic Christianity to Scotland and helped to re-establish it in Wales and in the North and West of England. Columbanus was the great Irish missionary to continental Europe, where he and his followers helped to convert the heathen invaders from the East. When Rome, in the person of St. Augustine, Pope Gregory's apostle to the Angles, penetrated again to England, a showdown between Roman and Celtic Christianity was inevitable. The dramatic confrontation occurred at the Council of Whitby in 664. Rome, with its organization and authority, won, and Celtic Catholicism went into eclipse. But some of its influence persisted all over Europe, and it had a large share in shaping the culture that ultimately emerged from the dark ages. This book's fascination is the picture that it gives of the movements of peoples, the shaping of new countries, and the development of ideas during those too-little-known centuries.
