This book reflects a preoccupation with analysing the early Byzantine chronicles, above all the very different works of Marcellinus and Malalas, both as historiographical artefacts and as testimony for the years they cover. Many of the studies here demonstrate that, when set in context, even the briefest chronicle entry may shed new light on some aspect of early Byzantine politics, topography or prosopography. Particular themes are the development of the Christian chronicle as a form of presenting the past, the ceremonial life of Constantinople, and the relations between the Roman government and the tribes invading the Balkans.

The Chronicle Of Seert written by Philip Wood and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-29 with Religion categories.

This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. This monograph uses a medieval Arabic chronicle, the Chronicle of Seert, as a window into the Christian history of Iraq. The Chronicle describes events that are unknown from other sources, but it is most useful for what it tells us about the changing agendas of those who wrote history and their audiences in the period c.400-800. By splitting the Chronicle into its constituent layers, Philip Wood presents a rich cultural history of Iraq. He examines the Christians' self-presentation as a church of the martyrs and the uncomfortable reality of close engagement with the Sasanian state. The history of the past was used as a source of solidarity in the present, to draw together disparate Christian communities. But it also represented a means of criticising figures in the present, whether these be secular rulers or over-mighty bishops and abbots. The Chronicle gives us an insight into the development of an international awareness within the church in Iraq. Christians increasingly raised their horizons to the Roman Empire in the West, which offered a model of Christian statehood, while also being the source of resented theological innovation or heresy. It also shows us the competing strands of patronage within the church: between laymen and clergy; church and state; centre and periphery. Building on earlier scholarship rooted in the contemporary Syriac sources, Wood complements that picture with the testimony of this later witness.

Pure written by Linda Kay Klein and has been published by Atria Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-02 with Religion categories.

In Pure, Linda Kay Klein uses a potent combination of journalism, cultural commentary, and memoir to take us “inside religious purity culture as only one who grew up in it can” (Gloria Steinem) and reveals the devastating effects evangelical Christianity’s views on female sexuality has had on a generation of young women. In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls—resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder—and trapped them in a cycle of shame. This is the sex education Linda Kay Klein grew up with. Fearing being marked a Jezebel, Klein broke up with her high school boyfriend because she thought God told her to and took pregnancy tests despite being a virgin, terrified that any sexual activity would be punished with an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. When the youth pastor of her church was convicted of sexual enticement of a twelve-year-old girl, Klein began to question purity-based sexual ethics. She contacted young women she knew, asking if they were coping with the same shame-induced issues she was. These intimate conversations developed into a twelve-year quest that took her across the country and into the lives of women raised in similar religious communities—a journey that facilitated her own healing and led her to churches that are seeking a new way to reconcile sexuality and spirituality. Pure is “a revelation... Part memoir and part journalism, Pure is a horrendous, granular, relentless, emotionally true account" (The Cut) of society’s larger subjugation of women and the role the purity industry played in maintaining it. Offering a prevailing message of resounding hope and encouragement, “Pure emboldens us to escape toxic misogyny and experience a fresh breath of freedom” (Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love Warrior and founder of Together Rising).

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible. The books of 1 and 2 Chronicles were written to unify the people of Israel around the true worship of God. After the trauma of exile and facing political opposition in their return to the land, they needed to know that God would prove gracious to those who repent of their sin. This accessible study walks readers through these two Old Testament books over the course of 12 weeks, pointing them to God’s mercy, compassion, and forgiveness—and his promise to bless his people by dwelling with them forever. Part of the Knowing the Bible series.

Perhaps there is no other individual of any prominence in the history of religion about whom so many differences exist as about Jesus, the son of Mary and Joseph. In The Jesus Christ Chronicles, Wazir Kooloo shares a comprehensive examination of the negative Islamic schools of thought about Jesus while analyzing past mistakes and answering long-held questions. While relying on the verses within the Holy Quran as a starting point, Kooloo takes spiritual seekers on a journey that delves into the unknown true facts surrounding Mother Mary, her parents, and her initiation into the services of the Temple; the historical account of Jesus pilgrimage to India; and the Prophets journey to Mount of Olives where He is told He must suffer great persecution for the honor of God. Kooloo follows the story of Jesus life to 33 ADa time in history that many biblical scholars refer to as the Year of the Passion of Christ, when an event unraveled that changed the course of religious history forever. The Jesus Christ Chronicles utilizes well-researched facts as it shares a fresh perspective on religion, philosophy, and reality.
