Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Faith This is not a theological treatise on the one hand, nor on the other is it a volume of sermons. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand. Excerpt from The Faith of the Gospel: A Manual of Christian Doctrine This history of the origin of the present book will explain its form. While attempting to go with fair thoroughness into the various questions raised, it does not profess to deal with them exhaustively, as a book written for the learned would. It assumes little in the reader besides an average English education and a devout mind. Recondite theological language is avoided. Terms are explained as they occur. It is hoped, therefore, that'the book may prove useful, not only to Teachers of the Divine Mysteries at the beginning of their studies, but to many private Chris tians also, who wish to have an intelligent grasp of their faith. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God The work that was entrusted to me by the General Editors of the International Theological Library was simply the presentation of the conception of God that is characteristic of the Christian religion. I was not sent to search for God, but rather to report as well as I might what the Christian faith testifies concerning him. It has seemed to me that this single commission was enough for me to undertake, and I have attempted nothing more. No report of the literature of the subject will be found upon these pages, nor any quotation of other men's work, nor any controversy. It is the sole endeavour of the book to set forth the Christian doctrine of God for the present day: not the doctrine of the past, or of the future, but the thought of God that we may now entertain if we follow the leading of Jesus Christ the revealer. So far as I have the power, I have sought to be faithful both to the ancient light to the modern, and I have hoped that my presentation might bear reasonably well the tests of the present time. There are many ways of dealing with the vast and glorious theme, and certainly there must be room for a book that simply aims to show forth doctrine as Christian faith may receive it now. I have written in the full conviction that the light which Jesus Christ gives us upon God is the true light, and that God is such a Being as he inspires us to love and trust. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Salvation The aim of the present work is to present a biblical, historical, and constructive discussion of the Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various Opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend them selves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find some thing in the book by which they may be interested or instructed. The present discussion presupposes a general know ledge Of Biblical Theology and of the History Of Christian Doctrine, such as is furnished by the relevant sections Of my Theology of the New Testament and Professor Fisher's History of Christian Doctrine, earlier volumes of the International Theological Library. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation IN publishing this, the third volume of the Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation, I think I may assume that many questions excited by the History of the Doctrine which appeared four years ago will find their answer here. In order to make what is the central doctrine of Christianity intelligible as such, I have been compelled to give an almost complete outline of Systematic Theology, the remaining parts of which could easily be supplied. No one who has given any attention to Vol. II. Will be surprised at the fulness of the exposition. I need not, it seems to me, make any statement in advance regarding what has been my aim in the positive explication of the doctrine. For one thing my path and the goal it leads to were marked out for me by what I have exhibited in Vol. II. As the Biblical material of the doctrine; while for the rest I think I have already made it sufficiently clear in Vol. I. That my theology has no place in the ordinary classification of theological parties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sermons on Christian Doctrine Wherever opposite views are held with warmth by religious-minded men, we may take for granted that there is some higher truth which embraces both. All high truth is the union of two contradictories. Thus predestination and freewill are opposites: and the truth does not lie between these two, but in a higher reconciling truth which leaves both true. So with the opposing views of baptism. Men of equal spirituality are ready to sacrifice all to assert, or to deny, the doctrine of baptismal regeneration. And the truth, I believe, will be found, not in some middle, moderate, timid doctrine, which skilfully avoids extremes, but in a truth larger than either of these opposite views, which is the basis of both, and which really is that for which each party tenaciously clings to its own view, as to a matter of life and death. The present occasion only requires us to examine three views. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
