Excerpt from The Christian Reconstruction of Modern Life The object of this book is the spiritualizing of the social passion. The undertaking has grown from the conviction that this mightiest force of our time can attain its reconstructive purpose only as it is conscious of its own implicit spiritual quality, and becomes The Christian Reconstruction of Modern Life. Experienced readers will perceive my obligations to prominent scholars and thinkers. Lest the relatively inexperienced should suppose that positions familiar to progressive scholarship are eccentricities of the author, special obligation is acknowledged to Eucken and Bergson, and to pragmatism in the ideal and spiritual apprehension learned, however imperfectly, from the lips of its most acute interpreter, John Edward Russell, beloved teacher, revered friend. The conceptions concerning the Old and New Testaments are those derived from the reverently fearless scholarship of which the regnant example is Heinrich Julius Holtzmann: upon his new grave Christian learning has laid its wreath of immortelle and passion flower. Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age "It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time," says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has resolved itself into a chaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted with confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter impredicability. Excerpt from The Church and Modern Life The time is come, said a New Testament prophet for judgment to begin at the house of God. Perhaps that time ought never to pass, but if, in any measure, the criticism of the church has of late been suspended, it is certainly reopened now, in good earnest. Nor is this criticism confined to outsiders; the church is forced to listen in these days to caustic censures from those who speak from within the fold. Excerpt from The Reconstruction of Religion: A Sociological View One of the greatest social needs of the present is a re ligion adapted to the requirements of modern life and in harmony with modern science. 1 Since the beginning of the Great War a number of the most dispassionate and detached thinkers of our time have expressed the same general idea. Two eminent British sociologists have re cently expressed themselves thus: We are compelled to the admission (one hard for the student, the man of pure or applied science), that the essential problem of life is not material, but psychical. In a word, life needs to be eupsychic; or in an older word, religious. 2 In May, 1916, Mr. Gr. Lowes Dickinson said in a private conver sation with the author, If I should guess, I would say that the great need of the world, just at present, is more religion. Of course, I mean religion of the right sort; of religion of a certain sort there is a plenty, but not enough of the right sort. 3 Again, in March, 1915, the author had the pleasure of visiting with Mr. Frederic Harrison, the veteran leader of the English Positivists. Mr. Harrison forcefully expressed the opinion that the Great War was due to the decadence of ethical religion, and that the problem of world peace and order would never be settled until the religious question was settled. Excerpt from Sidelights on Christian Doctrine The Studies in this Volume are based upon Addresses on Christian Doctrine given at various Conferences and Bible Schools in America. This may explain the semi-popular character of the exposition, and some peculiarities in the style, which it has not been thought necessary to remove. Perhaps the less formal nature of the Studies will adapt them better to the needs of those whom technical works on theology might repel. The treatment makes no pretence at exhaustiveness, but probably it will be found that few points of real importance in theological study are left untouched. The work may therefore serve as an introduction to more elaborate handbooks on the Christian doctrines. It may serve to show what, in substance, theology is, to create an interest in its questions, and to remove some misconceptions as to its nature, necessity, and scope. In some degree, it may even be a contribution to the right apprehension of the Christian truth itself. These are days in which theology is at a discount. The cry is loud for "reconstruction" of Christian doctrines; for re-statement in terms of living thought. This book has little to offer in the way of novelties. Excerpt from The Practical Basis of Christian Belief: An Essay in Reconstruction Such attempts at reconstruction are as far as possible removed from merely rationalist and destructive criticism. Modern psychology has fully justified many of the instincts and feel ings which rationalism regarded as superstitious. Modern historic criticism while diminishing the supernatural and abnormal element in early Christianity, has in fact tended to bring out its pure lustre. A great part, if not the whole, of Christian doctrine turns out to be based upon fundamental facts in the nature of man and the Spiritual world. That is the conviction with which I have always written, and the conviction becomes stronger as I grow old. Excerpt from Christianity in a New World Of the peculiar responsibility that the Christian Church faces in these days of readjustment and reconstruction, the Baptists of the Northern States have their full share. These responsibilities are indeed emphasized, if not increased, by the changes which we have recently made in our organization, and as a result of which we enter into closer cooperation than before in the accomplishment of our denominational task. It was with these things in mind that this volume of essays and addresses was planned and undertaken. Loving our denomination and earnestly desiring that it shall do its full duty in this hour of peril-fraught opportunity, we offer this volume to our brethren in the hope that, in some small measure at least, it may contribute to that knowledge of the history of our religion and that apprehension of its essential elements which are needed to enable us to interpret this time and serve our generation as our fathers served theirs. Most of the chapters of this book were written especially for publication in it. The few which were originally delivered as public addresses, though bearing the marks of their special occasion, have lost none of their significance by the lapse of time since their delivery. Excerpt from The Christian Faith and the New Day This is not a reconstruction of theology but a plea for that work and some suggestion of a few typical points where it is needed and opportune. A teacher of theology shrinks a bit when it is said that the day for theology is over; he is apt to think in stead that the day has just come for vital religion which will mean a vital theology. But such a teacher knows well that theology can be devitalized by mistaking its own expressions for the truth it is trying to express. Visitors to theological seminaries often tell young men they are not to preach their theology, whereas in any sound way of speaking it is the only thing they are to preach. Yet the most deadly thing that could be preached is a theology that does not carry the message of religion for its own day. The appeal herein is not to technical theologians but to working ministers and thoughtful laymen who, after all, build and use the theology that is living and who sometimes fear to see it change. The great days just passed have given many of us a renewed assurance that Christianity is more vital and forceful than it has been for many a long day. Its vitality may well claim the right to phrase itself anew - which means to reconstruct theology at any point where it may need reconstructing.
