The book puts the current interest in historical Jesus research into a proper historical context, highlighting Gnosticism’s lasting influence on early Christianity and making the provocative claim that nearly all Christian Churches are in some way descended from Roman Christianity. Breaking with the accepted wisdom of Christianity’s origins, the revised history it puts forward challenges the assumptions of Church and secular historians, biblical critics and general readers alike, with profound repercussions for scholarship, belief and practice.

Men and women embarking on the study of systematic theology quickly find themselves awash in a sea of unfamiliar theological terms, historical names, and philosophical "-isms." The Survivor's Guide to Theology is both a life preserver to help stay afloat and a compass to help navigate these often unfamiliar waters. While many books on systematic theology provide introductory material, still the reader is often forced to dive right into actual theology without adequate framework for understanding. Resources for building this framework are available but scattered. This unique book brings them together in one place. The Survivor's Guide to Theology is ideal for both introduction and review/reference. - The first part deals with the question, "What is Theology?" It addresses issues, categories, theory of knowledge, and more. - The second part surveys nine major theological systems. For each, the author provides history and background, overview of content and theological distinctive, and a critique. - The final part provides the reader with biographical sketches of significant theologians, a brief dictionary of common theological terms, and an annotated bibliography of major theological works.

A missionary family, a violent attack, and one woman’s brave determination to break free from trauma. Jadie’s story is one of forgiveness, hope, healing, and victory in Christ. When she was a young girl, Jadie (and her missionary family) experienced a brutal attack while on the island of Palau in the South Pacific. That one hellish night left her physically, emotionally, and spiritually damaged. Jadie had the choice to live the life of a victim or to walk the hard road of healing that leads to wholeness in Christ. Though she faced physical injury, emotional scarring (including avoidance, memory loss, and regression), and spiritual attacks (including hopelessness, lack of identity, flashbacks, night terrors, and paralyzing fear of a “man in black”), Echoes of Darkness is a story of hope. Only by learning her true identity in Christ, learning the true meaning of forgiveness, and learning how to rightly apply faith and her authority in Christ to her situation was she able to move from victim to victor and experience a life of true freedom and complete wholeness.

At the time, he was the second-oldest survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor--a fascinating man with an incredible story. Almost every Tuesday for the next five years, Dianne met with Jim, soaking in his straightforward wisdom and gentle encouragement and leaning on him during some of the most difficult and most beautiful moments of her life. Along the way, she began to learn the rhythm and choices of a remarkable man--and the simple faith that guided his steps. The invitation in Two hundred tuesdays is to walk that path with Dianne and Jim--imperfectly and ever forward. And maybe, just maybe, to find true fulfillment along the way." -- Page [4] of cover.

Dr. Richard Baggett heard disconsolate believers expressing despair and frustration about their failures when comparing themselves to Biblical characters. As the author continued to peruse the Scriptures, he discovered a startling truth: the heroes of the Bible were, in truth, ordinary people, mired in crises, who met the Living God and changed dramatically, becoming More Than Survivors! These saints who became legends were ordinary people, who had in-law problems, committed vile sins, had doubts, expressed frustration, and raged at the Lord at times, cheated their siblings, cursed the day that they were born, murdered Christians before becoming one, and met the Lord in prison! But when they encountered the risen Christ, they became extraordinary heroes of faith! Read their amazing stories in More Than Survivors!

This story is a personal testimony of God's amazing and intimate work in my life. Despite a haunting childhood and struggles in my adult years, God has blessed my journey tremendously. Even though I have been a Christian for most of my days, there were decades that all I could see were the trials. I felt distanced from God, yet, at the same time I knew that He was my only hope. So I blamed myself for the disconnection and my many shortcomings. I tried hard to be a "good Christian" but continually failed, damaging my marriage and maligning my parenting. Counseling had helped some, but turmoil still raged within me. I sank increasingly deeper into depression and anxiety while striving to be everything I thought others expected of me. Yet, all the while God was conscious of my struggles. Even more, He was actively interceding on my behalf. Well before I was conscious of it, God was sustaining me through the turmoil and fortifying me for my biggest challenge to date. When I felt at my weakest, God proved faithful to His promise of comfort and strength. Not only did He carry me, He championed my victory over the hold that darkness once had on my past. In an amazing way that only God could orchestrate, He redeemed my existence and set me free with new found joy and purpose. I now feel His love, His grace, and His power in a way that I never could before. The journey was challenging to say the least, but I wouldn't trade this walk with God for anything. My hope is that those who read my story will find encouragement and leave its pages in awe of the Great Father God, Savior Son, and Empowering Holy Spirit, Who are worthy of all praise.

How Survivors Of Abuse Relate To God written by Susan Shooter and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with Religion categories.

Grappling with theological issues raised by abuse, this book argues that the Church should be challenged, and ministered to, by survivors. Paying careful attention to her interviews with Christian women survivors, Shooter finds that through painful experiences of transformation they have surprisingly become potential agents of transformation for others. Shooter brings the survivors' narratives into dialogue with the story of Job and with medieval mystic Marguerite Porete's spirituality of 'annihilation'. Culminating in an engagement with contemporary feminist theology concerning power and powerlessness, there emerges a set of principles for authentic community spirituality which crosses boundaries with God, supports appropriate human boundaries and, crucially, listens attentively. Appealing to Church leaders, students, practitioners and practical theologians, this book offers a creative and ethical theological enquiry as well as some spiritual anchor points for survivors.
