"The Christian Virtuoso" is not merely a treatise on scientific exploration; it is a profound testament to the harmonious coexistence of faith and the pursuit of knowledge. In this groundbreaking book, Boyle posits a bold proposition: that engaging in experimental philosophy, the precursor to modern scientific inquiry, not only does not hinder but actively aids an individual in becoming a better Christian. The original text from which this new edition is drawn contains several archaic spellings, some grammatical inconsistencies, and outdated language conventions. The Revised Version attempts to capture the meaning and intent of the original text while adhering to modern English conventions.

"Victor Nuovo represents the philosophical thought of John Locke as the work of a Christian virtuoso: an empirical natural philosopher, who was also a practising Christian. Locke believed that the two vocations were not only compatible, but mutually sustaining, and he aspired to unite them in producing a system of Christian philosophy." -- source : éditeur.

Early modern Europe was the birthplace of the modern secular outlook. During the seventeenth century nature and human society came to be regarded in purely naturalistic, empirical ways, and religion was made an object of critical historical study. John Locke was a central figure in all these events. This study of his philosophical thought shows that these changes did not happen smoothly or without many conflicts of belief: Locke, in the role of Christian Virtuoso, endeavoured to resolve them. He was an experimental natural philosopher, a proponent of the so-called 'new philosophy', a variety of atomism that emerged in early modern Europe. But he was also a practising Christian, and he professed confidence that the two vocations were not only compatible, but mutually sustaining. He aspired, without compromising his empirical stance, to unite the two vocations in a single philosophical endeavour with the aim of producing a system of Christian philosophy.

Robert Boyle written by Reijer Hooykaas and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Philosophy categories.

This book offers a comprehensive study of the thought of Robert Boyle in the context of his time. Boyle was a pioneer of experimental physics and founder of modern chemistry. Hooykaas provides a historical study of the relations between science and Christian faith in Boyle focusing on his views of religion, revelation, reason and experience. Boyle's conception of science is compared with those of Descartes, Gassendi, Newton, Bacon and Pascal. It is a close textual study of the collected works of Boyle using the edition of 1772. It corrects criticism that Hooykaas abused history of science to engage in Christian apologetics. It is intended for historians of science, philosophers of science, students of religion and science relations, Boyle scholars, and historians of chemistry. Contents: Foreword; Introduction; Chapter I: Boyle's Life and Times; Chapter II: Science; Chapter III: Religion and the Study of Nature; Chapter IV: Special Revelation; Index of Names. Co-published with The Pascal Center for Advanced Studies in Faith and Science.

Virtuoso Theology written by Frances M. Young and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-05-31 with Religion categories.

Thoroughly engaging and full of insight, 'Virtuoso Theology' examines the Bible and biblical criticism in a startlingly illuminating way. Frances Young sees the Bible as a divine composition, a piece of music accessible to varying interpretations. From that premise she is able to compare the various performancesÓ involved in the church's understanding of Scripture. From the formation of the historical canon to modern biblical criticism, various approaches to the Bible have served different purposes. As in a musical interpretation of a score, these approaches are not necessarily correct or incorrect, but taken together, they strive to bring Scripture to life - from the question of textual authenticity to the experience of transcendent truth. As in an orchestra, diverse instruments merge to create something larger than the sum of their individual parts, enabling us to hear a more complete biblical message. An astutely appreciative approach to the contributions of biblical criticism by a leading church historian.
