Excerpt from The Church and Her Prophets Under the terms of three striking figures the Master has set forth the mission of His Church in the world. The disciples are as light in the world, bearing witness for the truth, enlightening the conscience of men, making men know what is that good and acceptable and perfect will Of God. They are the salt of the earth, purifying, sweeten ing, preserving the life Of mankind from decay and death, and making it meet for the Master's use. They are the leaven hidden in the meal, to transform and change it, and make it fit for the Master's table. The Church is not a mutual benefit society, though it benefits in incalculable ways its members. It is not a social club, though its social life is most marked. Over and above all, it is a society intent on the one object of purifying, sweetening, transforming, saving the entire life of the world. 'the true and grand idea of the church, ' said Thomas Arnold, 'is a society for making men like Christ, earth like Heaven, and the kingdoms of this world the Kingdoms of our God.' - samuel zane batten. I saw in the night-visions, and, behold, there came with the clouds of heaven one like unto a. Son of Man, and he came even to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. And there was given Him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, and all the peoples, nations and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His Kingdom that which shall not be de stroyed. - daniel the prophet. Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets in Their Historical Relations The past few years have seen a revival of interest in the study of the Scriptures. The unique place occupied by the Bible as a means of grace throughout the entire history of the Christian Church has again come to be recognized, and great numbers of old and young have taken up its earnest, devout, and systematic study. This study is by no means confined to the New Testa ment, for Christians are learning more and more that, while they find their loftiest inspiration in the study of the life, the character, and the teaching of the Master and of his disciples, the Old Testament has not been displaced by the New. The early Christians were right in placing the Old Testament by the side of the New, because the former is of inestimable value, and the earnest student soon finds that every part of the book is full of teaching that is of practical value even in the twentieth century A. Excerpt from The Prophets: Elijah to Christ In quest of truth and light on these prophets I have gone to many books, and the best Of them have sent me back ere long to the Bible. For counsel and encouragement I have looked to a few friends, and especially to three: Walter L. Lingle, D. D., presiding genius at Montreat; Wm. M. Mcpheeters, D. D., professor Of He brew in the Columbia Theological Seminary; and George A. Wauchope, Ph. D., professor Of English in the University Of South Carolina. Each of these in his own way has let the cour tesy of a friend shine through the discrimination of a scholar. Other men have laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. Excerpt from The Prophets of the Christian Faith Brooding his children, awakening in them a life higher than their own, leading them up into life and light, as the sun leads up the plant from the darkness Of the soil into the light of day. Some men are hardly conscious of this divine life; others are conscious of it only on rare occasions; some possess it as a vague, uninterpreted feeling, an enigmatical, restless desire for they know not what, a dream from which they seem to themselves to be continually awakening to the stern realities of life, a half-seen vision which disappears before it is really discerned; while to some it is the dominant force of their lives, the direct ing purpose, the rudder-holding hand, the great reality. Among these last, those who have the power to phrase this divine life in words, to interpret it so as to make its meaning clear to their fellows, are the world's prophets. They receive their message from God, and give it to their fellow-men. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Church of God: A Social History Like all histories, however, this is also a unique story. The twists and turns in the history of the Church of God smack of the isolation of Cleveland, Tennessee, and of the leadings of a.i Tomlinson and other homespun prophets. Crews writes of earn est men struggling to hammer out a code of morality in a region where tobacco-raising was ethically more problematic than slum housing and where the kkk was far better known than the afl. In the end, this is the story of a church that contributed to the birth of worldwide Pentecostalism but that has spent most of its history in its own world confronting its own problems. Crews knows the Church of God well - both experientially and as a scholar. He has read the writings of the prophets; he has talked and sung with the true believers. All denominational his tory is controversial; no telling of it is likely to satisfy everyone. But Crews has written with fairness and restraint about a move ment that could hardly have expected such respect twenty years ago. That is as it should be. Pentecostals have earned a place in history, and it is fitting that their stories be told respectfully. Having won such regard, it is fitting that Pentecostals listen to an objective accounting of their past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Historic Meaning of Prophecy The greater portion of the prophecies by far refer to the coming -day cycle, which is the era that contains the seven trumpets. John is the only prophet who men tions the seven seals and the seven trumpets; but the Old Testament prophets also wrote about those eras that John describes. The seven seals and the seven trumpets extend from the beginning of the Christian era to the beginning of the Millennial era. Prophecy is most profuse upon the sixth seal and sixth trumpet. Some prophets describe the progress of the Church, others describe the progress of Gentile dominion in the powers of the world, and others describe the progress of Antichrist, the minor prophets generally dwelling upon some particular eras. The major prophets describe the Church, the world powers, and the Antichrist by turns. The Bible method has been observed in this work by giving a description of the two spiritual powers in separate chapters. These are the best general suggestions that can be given, except the one most important of all, and that is the aid of the Holy Spirit. The person who reads prophecy as he reads history fails to apprehend it as a revelation from God. But it is even more than that: it is a revela tion of God; for that is the purpose of inspired revelation. Excerpt from The Prophets and Kings: Of the Old Testament That thoughts of this kind did not take much hold of Mr. Erskine, I knew. It often struck me that if he could have entered into them, he would have had greater influence over his Presbyterian countrymen; he would have understood better what their old Covenant signified; he would have been regarded less as a mere protestant against the exclu siveness of their Calvinism; his idea of God, as an Educator, would have quickened many conceptions of Him as a Ruler and a Judge which had become petrified in their minds. I was much possessed by this feeling when I first published this book. It has become deepened in me while I have considered, in reference to recent controversies about the Union of Church and State, the theories of a distinguished divine whom Mr. Erskine reverenced and loved for the geniality of his character and the warmth of his heart, whom Scotland regards as one that made her old theology in some degree palatable, or at least tolerable, to the philosophers and economists of this generation. The defence of Establishments which Dr. Chalmers put forth in his London Lectures between thirty and forty years ago, must have received many a useful cor rection, even a severe commentary, from the zeal and struggles of the writer' s latter years. These may have modified greatly the influence of it on his own country men. But for those to whom the Lectures were addressed, - for our parties in the South, - his apology had, and has still, many attractions.
