For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns--broken cisterns that can hold no water. Jeremiah 2:13 The modern church, to its very core, is wrong. It is not what it was supposed to be. Today church is a "thing"...it's an organization, a building, an institution...something never intended by Christ. In the early church the power of the Holy Spirit operated in abundance and the world was changed. Over the 2000 years since, we have traded the glory of God for an institution, traded His power for our own, and traded His church for a sad counterfeit. It's time to wake up and see ourselves for what we've become. This is not a revolution, not even a revival. This is a breaking. This is death to all we have become, that we might return to what is real.

What if true church growth begins by allowing the church to die? In The Death and Resurrection of the Church, Jeremy Myers proposes that most modern church growth practices are built on faulty premises. Some of these are even rooted in the false promises that Satan offered to Jesus in the wilderness temptations. If we want the church to grow and thrive, it first needs to die to these false promises. The church must stop striving after strength, power, fame, riches, and glory, and instead follow Jesus into death. Only then will we become the church that Jesus wants. Since there can be no resurrection without death, the church must die so that it can rise again. This revised and updated book now includes discussion questions, perfect for a small group setting. The real question for homiletics in our increasingly postmodern, post-Christian contexts is not how we are going to prevent preaching from dying, but how we are going to help it die a good death. Preaching was not made to live. At most, preaching is a witness, a sign, a crimson X marking a demolition site. The church has developed sophisticated technologies in modernity to give preaching the semblance of life, belying the truth: preaching was born under a death sentence. It was born to die. Only when preaching embraces its own death is it able to live. This book, then, is a bold homiletical manifesto against preaching in support of preaching, and beyond preaching to the entire worship experience. It troubles modern homiletical theologies in light of the trouble always already at work within preaching. Hereby, it supports a way of preaching--and teaching preaching--that moves counter to the "wisdom of this world." It aims to joins in God‘s self-revealed counterlogic of superabundance that saturates and thereby breaks open worldly systems of thought and practice. The purpose of this book is to expose preaching to its own death-to help it embrace its death-so that it can discover what eternal and abundant life might look and feels like.

We often hear people say that the Church is full of hypocrites, but that is impossible even though there are hypocrites that go to church. I have grown to understand that the Church is full of love because God is love, and there is nothing hypocritical about God. The Church does consists of people, hypocrites included, but God=s love is greater and his love fills the Church. So What=s wrong with the church.... Does Jesus need to die again? Unfortunately I have experienced a lot of bad in the Church that caused me to have a negative perception early on. I was shallow minded and only thought good things happen in the Church. So when I was exposed to the bad it put a damper on what Church should of been to me. I thank God for covering me when I was not being obedient. I also thank God for renewing my mind and getting me to the point where I am able to help others now. This book is a reflection of the good and bad that happens in the church. We need to realize that people need to hear the bad about the church too. It gives closure and healing to those who are in need. Being hurt in the Church can be a painful experience. This book deals with real issues and everything written actually happen. God allowed me to experience the trials and tribulations so that I could be healed from my past. I experienced God=s Truth in writing this book and I am happy that he chose me. So Does Jesus need to die again? No, but we must die daily in order to be pleasing to God.

Christianity is dying—in parts of the world it is already dead. Yet there is hope, but it will require radical surgery that many are unprepared to accept as necessary. The vast behemoth that calls itself institutional Christianity must die if the Jesus Movement upon which it was founded is to live. The essential message of the Christian gospel is that death leads to new life. Is Christianity ready to embrace this truth and die so that it can live?
