Suddenly we heard the sound of an engine, or engines, in the sky. We looked up and saw a small aircraft. I still recollect the look on his face when he heard, and then saw the plane. I immediately pointed to the plane, and addressing him by name said: Tullie! That is my death. Save yourself ! He hesitated, and I reached to push him out of the van. He moved before my hand reached him. At this time,I looked up to the plane and said, God, if you ready for me, I ready for you. Im not scared. For thousands of years the world has looked for me. Many men have claimed to be me. Even more people have said that others were, or are me, so I am inviting you to read and see for yourselves. Then you might know: This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. St John 6: 14

Hamilton Smith (1862-1943), born in Barnes, Surrey, the son of a sea captain, was employed in the office of his uncle's building firm, where he was later joined by his cousin F B Hole. By 1901, married and living in Sutton, Surrey, with his wife and young family, he had retired from the building trade and entered full-time upon the task of building up the church of God. Later in life, he moved to Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, his wife Rachel's home county. His personal ministry was delivered in the United Kingdom, but his written ministry continues to be read worldwide. Along with H P Barker, A J Pollock, J T Mawson and F B Hole he frequently contributed articles to "Scripture Truth" magazine, which often provided the basis for books later published by the Central Bible Truth Depot. Hamilton Smith's written expositions of the Scriptures are brief, clear and very much to the point. This volume is one of a series of Old Testament character studies for which he is probably best known. It traces the major events of the life of Elijah, with all the highs and lows in his work as a prophet. He knew only too well the inadequacies of his own humanity. But Elijah knew the living God, was conscious of His presence, and was aware that prayer brought him into contact with the greatest power in the universe. By experience, he comes to understand that the God of creation, power and judgment, is supremely the God of grace. At each step, the author presents clear, practical lessons for Christians today as they too seek to present God's word with authority to an indifferent or antgonistic world.

.From one generation to another, the servants of the Lord have sought to edify their fellow-believers by commenting on the Old Testament narrative. In such ministries expositions of the life of Elijah have always been prominent. His sudden appearance out of complete obscurity, his dramatic interventions in the national history of Israel, his miracles, his departure from earth in a chariot of fire, all serve to captivate the thought of preacher and writer alike. The New Testament sustains this interest. If Christ Jesus is the Prophet "like unto Moses," Elijah, too, has his New Testament counterpart in John-the greatest of the prophets. And even more remarkably, Elijah himself in living person reappears to view when, with Moses, he stands on the mount of "the excellent glory," "to speak of the strife that won our life with the incarnate Son of God."

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... experiencing, nor seeking to experience, the reality of it; lastly, there was the beginning in some to be indifferent whether the duties of the Church were fulfilled or not, whether God's purpose was accomplished or not, and to consider that, if Christians did not worship the heathen gods, or take the side of the idolaters against the Church, they might be esteemed faithful although lukewarm. These statements, if near the mark, shew that by this time there was already a considerable declension of the Church, and a wide door opened for the extension of the evil. Or, as Hengstenberg more briefly expresses it: "First of all, the seven epistles pre'supposes a time, when the word of the Lord, But while the 'bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept, and that word, 'Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall voa, v cold, 'had already passed into fulfilment. The blessed period of 'the first love is past, even there too, where it still relatively 'stood fast; zeal has relaxed and corruption made great in'roads; we feel ourselves everywhere transferred to the latter 'times, in which a grievous corruption, that not suddenly 'but by gradual advances had sprung up, and acquired new 'strength as it proceeded, had already befallen those 'churches." (On Rev. of St John, p. 10.) Third. Church history shews that, since the date of the Epistles to the Seven Churches in Asia, the declension of the Church has gone on increasing. It might perhaps have been sufficient to have appealed, for the truth of this proposition, to the reader's knowledge of that most melancholy and confounding of all records, Ecclesiastical History, which teems, in each century, with the endless disputes respecting doctrine and practice between confederate bands of...

Learning through experience definitely makes an impression, but isn't it better sometimes to learn from the successes and failures of others? Scripture tells us that those who came before us are examples for us (1 Cor. 10:6 and 11), given that we could learn what to do-and what not to do. Few offer us the lessons that Elijah does. Looking for God's provision? Elijah dealt with that. Trying to believe God when everything in the natural is against you? Elijah dealt with that too. Battling with self-pity? Elijah faced that as well. Elijah's ministry wasn't very long, but it was packed full of life lessons that we can use today. You may not think an Old Testament prophet has anything to teach you, but you'll want to think again-a man translated to heaven by a whirlwind must have something to share. Explore the right-and wrong-ways to serve God, and learn more about how God honors His servants. This book offers the life experience without the hard knocks!

This book is the first full expository series that I had done, first delivered at a smaller scale to the good people of Bertrams Chapel in 19951996. I am thankful for the call of God on my life to preach His Word. As a pastor, one of my concerns is that people grow closer to God through the study of the Scriptures. I am passionate about preaching and teaching systematically through books of the bible and thereby teaching the whole counsel of God.

The ministry of the Prophet Elijah is a testament to the power of the Holy Spirit in every prophet's life. His life is the culmination of the work of holiness and glory that is at the very heart of God. However, as with all men, Elijah is not without his worldly struggles. He has experienced a life of despair and emotional unrest in having to deal with an evil prophetess of Baal named Jezebel. Our first encounter with Elijah begins in 1 Kings 17:1. In this scripture we can witness the power of the office that is carried by those who walk with a prophetic mantle. There are some scholars who would want us to believe that the works of Elijah were for Elijah alone rather than the ability of every prophet who carries a prophetic mantle. These same scholars would lead us to believe that the works of Christ were for Christ alone rather than having been passed down to the church [John 14:12]. These scholars are called Cessationists. A Cessationist is someone who believes that the "miracle gifts" of tongues and healing have ceased-that the end of the apostolic age brought about cessation of the miracles associated with that age. Most Cessationists believe that, while God can and still does perform miracles today, the Holy Spirit no longer uses individuals to perform miraculous signs. This book will dispel that misnomer of the cessation belief much to the dislike of those who walk in the cessation theology. The Elijah anointing is for every believer not just prophets. It is manifested through the actions of the Holy Spirit in order to establish God's kingdom and salvation message to men. In 1 Kings 17:1 Elijah immediately begins with the use of the power of his office and causes a great drought to enter Israel because of the unbelief and disobedience against God. Elijah addresses King Ahab in this proclamation. We must read the scripture as it is written. The Lord did not instruct Elijah directly to proclaim this decree. However, through his prophetic calling God honored his proclamation in bringing the drought. God even went so far as to honor the word of Elijah when he told Ahab that the drought would not end, "except by my word" [v1]. In this statement we begin to understand the authority the Lord gives the prophetic office. It is His heart and it is His ministry. The office of the Prophet was established at the foot of Mt. Sinai [Deut. 18:15]. In this book I will establish the authority and power that God has given to us by using Elijah as an example of His presence upon the earth. Elijah is very much in tune with an heaven and earth covenant. He is a foreshadowing of Jesus' ministry. The ministry that re-established our relationship with God and removed the exile from His presence. In all my years of ministry, I have come to understand that the Lord gives us precedence and power to declare His kingdom upon the earth and to stir the atmosphere with His prophetic anointing. A great part of the Elijah anointing is not just the presence of miracles and supernatural events but Elijah drew attention to the sin of the nation and the sinfulness of its leaders. Consider 1 Kings 18:18, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and you have followed the Baals." Elijah is rebuking Ahab for having forsaken the Lord and turned to the ways of the spirit of Jezebel. Elijah is referring to the command given their forefathers in the wilderness before God brought them into the Promised Land under Joshua. "But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall surely perish" [Deut. 30:17-18].
