It is no cause for wonder, then, that London should have lost much of its ancient surroundings; the marvel is that so many of its old landmarks still remain. Portions of the famous Roman Wall may still be traced, some of the towers of which were in existence not much more than a century ago. London of to-day stands upon the site of a city, many times destroyed and as oft rebuilt, yet has not shifted from the scene of its earliest occupation. The distant views of the 'Metropolis of the World' reveal the landmarks of many centuries. The St. Paul's of to-day stands upon the same site as the early minster founded by Ethelbert, King of Kent, in 610. The towers of Westminster mark the spot on which was reared the church begun by Sebert and completed 360 years later, receiving the name of Westminster because of its position west of St. Paul's. The third landmark is also with us to-day, and has 'marked time' for many centuries; we refer to the White Tower of the keep of the Tower of London. Excerpt from London City Churches Amongst the most interesting objects in the City of London are its parish churches. The architectural beauty of most of them, the rich store of historical memories which they possess, and even their very names, many of which perpetuate topographical and personal incidents which would otherwise have been forgotten, combine to render them worthy of the closest attention. One of the most striking circumstances in connection with these sacred buildings is the great number of parishes - some of them of extremely small extent - which are contained in the comparatively inconsiderable area of the city. There appears to have been, as London was growing, a constant tendency to break up the large ancient parishes into a number of lesser ones. St. Mary Aldermary, for instance, represents the original church of St. Mary, and out of its parish was taken St. Mary-le-Bow, the later origin of which is indicated by its old name of "New Marie" Church, and, still farther to the north, St. Mary Colechurch, St. Mary Aldermanbury, and St. Mary Staining. Excerpt from The City of London If Minor Canon Westlake has found some difficulty in compressing the story of Westminster into one volume of this series, what can be said of mine, the greater task of recording this history of the great City within so small a compass? But the deed has been done, and I hope that I have omitted nothing of importance in the annals of London. If any of my readers fail to discover what they need within these pages, "Of y. charitye" I would crave that they would attribute this to lack of space, and not to want of research or care, or knowledge. Of the making of books on London there is no end, but its treasures of history are inexhaustible. In the Library and Museum at the Guildhall, in the Halls of the City Companies, in many wanderings through its streets and lanes, and churches, alone and in company of learned societies that concern themselves with unravelling its mysteries, I have gained much information, and in many books which I have collected, only a small portion of which I have included in the bibliography. Novel theories have been started with regard to the origin of London, of its continuance from Roman times during the whole Saxon period to the present day. It seems to me to be an idea founded on a very slender basis, and one that I have been unable to follow in these pages. Excerpt from The London City Churches: Their Use, Their Preservation and Their Extended Use In rebuilding the City churches after the great fire, Sir Christopher Wren had a unique opportunity which he turned to marvellous account. Living when Gothic architecture had practically died out, he accepted the classic orders, but from them evolved more or less a style of his own, ion don in ancient times was most richly supplied withsuitable for the requirements of the time and climate. He was master of proportion and a most admirable constructor; one of his axioms was that architecture should possess the attribute of the eternal. Being, however, compelled to practise strict economy, wherever charred walls or only the foundations of a medieval church remained in solid condition he worked them into his designs, his ground plan being often identical or almost identical with that of the previous building. In Wren's towers, which are so varied and original, again and again medieval masonry is incorporated. The outsides of his churches are now perhaps as a rule more telling than his interiors, chiefly because the effect of the latter has too often been injured by tasteless restoration. Excerpt from Notes on Old London City Churches: Their Organs, Organists, and Musical Associations Since the days of Stow there has been no lack of literature concerning the old City Churches of London; consequently, some kind of apology is needed for the adddition of yet another book to the already lengthy list. But, while previous works - whether in book, article or lecture form - have dealt, more or less fully, with the history and architecture of these interesting buildings, not one has given but the barest possible mention of the musical associations which cling so closely to well-nigh every one of them. It is hoped that the present volume may serve as a convenient guide to anyone visiting a City Church, by giving him a brief digest of its history, monuments and architectural features; mentioning its dimensions, and cost of re-building (if unhappily destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666); and following up this general information by chronicling as many facts as could be gleaned about the organs which have been erected within its walls; the alterations, enlargements, modernizations, &c., which have, from time to time, been effected in these organs; and, finally, describing the instrument as it exists at the present day. In this way, the history of the organs in the City Churches will be found to contain a perfect epitome of the History of the Art of Organ Building in England since the restoration of the Monarchy.
