Poetry. California Interest. Women's Studies. Winner of the 2014 Frost Place Chapbook Competition. In THE GREENHOUSE, Lisa Gluskin Stonestreet details the dual desires of new motherhood—the struggle to make peace with both connection and separation, with being a self irrevocably tied to another self. In lines both fluid and broken, delicate and irreverent, these lyrics recount with boundless love the difficulty of finding oneself again as a parent, and the elemental joy of being transformed by the very life that tethers you.

FULL-COLOR EDITION QUOTES FROM THOSE WHO KNOW: THE OPENING OF THE FIRST BIODOME GARDEN IN OTTAWA - AUGUST 27, 2014 "On August 17, 2014 the Brewer Park Community Garden (BPCG), situated across from Brewer Arena, celebrated the grand opening of Ottawa's first Biodome Garden project. To commemorate the day, the Park hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony along with an afternoon of events, including a barbecue and tours of the Biodome and gardens... When asked about the inspiration for the Biodome Garden, Oster credited the ever-enduring spirit of his co-project leader, Guy Souliere and the pages of Patricia Watters' book, The Biodome Garden Book..." "The completion of the Biodome Garden marks an historic moment for Ottawa. The project is the first structure of its kind in Eastern Canada, making it an exciting achievement that sets a high standard and precedence for future similar structures to be built in the Region." "It is the hope of the Brewer Park Community Garden that this innovative project will be replicated many times in several different forms across the City and Ottawa Region. Its replication could shape the beginning of a much more healthy and sustainable food culture across Ottawa." --SPACING MAGAZINE "Even before the advent of biodomes, experimentation had already begun with domed enclosures that could sustain year-round gardens. At the forefront was Patricia Watters, author of the “The Biodome Garden Book,” the premier book on passive-solar biodome greenhouse gardening. (WHOLE LIFE TIMES MAGAZINE) “May as well start off with the most comprehensive food production system that I have ever come across. A wonderful lady named Patricia Watters has written a book on how to construct a system that not only produces produce, but also fish, (a great protein source) in an environment that does not require sprays or the traditional heating and electrical expenses associated with green house systems." What do you know about Greenhouse Gardening? Are you interested in building your greenhouse? If yes, then this is the right book for you! The idea behind greenhouse dates back to the Roman period when Emperor Tiberius requested every day an Armenian cucumber to be eaten; for this reason, his gardeners had to use a device very similar to those used today in modern greenhouses. Nowadays, Greenhouse Gardening is one of the most common activities in the world. Why is it working? A greenhouse decreases the rate at which thermal energy is discharged from its structure by stopping heat absorbed by convection from leaving its environment. Usually, glass or plastic is the substrate for greenhouse building so that that sunlight can travel into it. This sunshine is essential to warming the greenhouse because it heats up the atmosphere within the greenhouse. The primary purpose of a greenhouse garden is to prolong the growing season of the coveted crops and plants. Fans of horticulture should also be passionate about greenhouses because it helps them to grow plants and flowers throughout the season, which can then be brought into the home. A greenhouse garden of plastic or glass can be installed cheaply or expensively, and look attractive or clearly utilitarian. This book covers: Type of Greenhouses Planning and Constructing a Greenhouse Greenhouse Environment Essential Equipment What Growing in Your Greenhouse Hydroponics in a Greenhouse Pests & Diseases control And much more... Solved written by David Miller and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-01 with Nature categories.

If our planet is going to survive the climate crisis, we need to act rapidly. Taking cues from progressive cities around the world, including Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Oslo, Shenzhen, and Sydney, this book is a summons to every city to make small but significant changes that can drastically reduce our carbon footprint. We cannot wait for national governments to agree on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and manage the average temperature rise to within 1.5 degrees. In Solved, David Miller argues that cities are taking action on climate change because they can – and because they must. The updated paperback edition of Solved: How the World’s Great Cities Are Fixing the Climate Crisis demonstrates that the initiatives cities have taken to control the climate crisis can make a real difference in reducing global emissions if implemented worldwide. By chronicling the stories of how cities have taken action to meet and exceed emissions targets laid out in the Paris Agreement, Miller empowers readers to fix the climate crisis. As much a “how to” guide for policymakers as a work for concerned citizens, Solved aims to inspire hope through its clear and factual analysis of what can be done – now, today – to mitigate our harmful emissions and pave the way to a 1.5-degree world.

Towards Low Carbon Cities In China written by Sun Sheng Han and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-19 with Business & Economics categories.

This book explores the relationship between urban form and greenhouse gas emissions in China, providing new insights for policy, urban planning and management. Drawing on the results of a four-year multidisciplinary research project, the book examines how factors such as urban households’ access to services and jobs, land use mixes and provision of public transport impact on greenhouse gas emissions. The authors analyse data from a wide range of sources including 4677 sample households from four major Chinese cities – Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Xi’an – with diverse locations, urban spatial structures and population sizes. The book explores residents’ attitudes to reducing GHG emissions and advances knowledge relating to three environmental scales – cross-metropolitan, intra-city and neighbourhood level. It also contributes to debates on low carbon policy by revealing the relevance of urban planning parameters at both the macro and micro levels. The book will be of interest to scholars in the areas of urban planning, urban management, environmental sustainability and resource utilisation, as well as urban policy makers and planners who are working toward developing low carbon, sustainable cities of the future.

Green House Green Engineering written by Patrick Bellew and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Architecture categories.

The book explores the sustainable design principles and innovative engineering behind the development of two of the world's largest conditioned public conservatories or biomes. Nestled within waterfront gardens, the biomes are the centrepiece of a development that will define Singapore as the world's premier tropical garden city: gardens that are on track to become a national and international exemplar of sustainable practice. Through a combination of photographs, graphics and narratives, the book explores the challenges of building two huge enclosures to recreate, in Singapore's naturally sunny, hot and humid environment, the ideal growing conditions for plants from cool-dry Mediterranean regions and the cool-moist conditions of tropical mountain regions. While the thrust of the narrative will consider the environmental design and engineering approach of Atelier Ten, three other voices reflect upon the landscape, architectural and structural engineering issues that confronted the core members of the integrated design team. As environmental engineers Atelier Ten developed highly innovative passive and active environmental strategies for controlling conditions within the conservatories, while minimising energy demand to exemplar levels. Outside the Biomes the unique Supertree structures house components of the systems that provide cool and dry air to the biomes and also incorporate photovoltaic panels to generate power. The systems run mainly on tree-thinnings - waste material generated by Singapore's National Parks maintenance programme - which are being diverted from landfill to be used as a source of biomass to generate energy and heat. The landscaping incorporates extensive natural water treatment devices to control, attenuate and cleanse the enormous flows of water from the biome roof areas and the hard landscaping areas during tropical storms. These have been seamlessly integrated into the hard and soft landscaping which comes to life during the frequent deluges that are characteristic of the tropical climate. In addition, Atelier Ten have developed sustainable management matrices to establish agreed principles of design and construction to exceed benchmarks establish by LEED(TM), Singapore's BCA Green Mark scheme and One Planet Living approaches.
