This book brings a major new resource to organization studies: the work of Norbert Elias. By applying his ideas in a critical but sympathetic way, the authors provide a new perspective on the never-ending stream of management fads and fashions. Standing back and taking a more detached perspective, inspired by the work of Norbert Elias (1897-1990), it becomes clear that many 'new' types of organizations are often variations on an old theme.Elias gives us considerable purchase on current debates through his emphasis on long-term historical perspectives, his highlighting of issues of power, emotion and subjectivity, his interweaving of analysis at the level of the state, the organization, groups, and individuals, his alternative 'take' on issues of agency and structure, and his relevance to a wide range of current organization theories. The contributions show the current relevance of Elias's work in numerous fields of organizational analysis such as the sociology of finance and markets, the comparative and cross-cultural study of organization, comparative management development, organizational meetings, organizational boundaries, gossip and privacy in organizations, emotion in organizations, and the significance of humiliation within organizations. It is, indeed, "time for Elias"!

Myth and mysticism have reigned supreme in Rgvedic interpretation for more than two millennia and a half. Even now, it cannot be said to be free of these. This study aims at completing the process of rational inquiry in Rgveda begun two centuries ago. It leaves behind myths and mystic experiences, simultaneously drawing the line between fact and fancy, which has eluded the scholars. Two types of evidence - literary and archaeological - have been used. Literary evidence ranges from Rgveda to the Brahmanas. The Archaeological material covers pre-Harappan , Harappan and post-Harappan levels. Through the interdisciplinary approach consisting of linguistic, anthropological and symbolical analysis of the material, the study emphasizes a consistently rational attitude to the study of Rgveda. In fact, as the study amply demonstrates, the fresh air of reason may change our understanding of Rgveda and also of ancient Indian history. Rgvedic hymns from this viewpoint may probably prove to be a valuable source of information of the historical events, which led to the downfall of the pre-Aryan Indus civilization. This is correlated to the archaeological material available on the Harappan sites. This is the first investigation of its kind and the conclusions of the study are no less original. Besides establishing the rationality of the Rgvedic narratives, it shows the events and their agents to be historical in the light of available archaeological material. The theory and the approach hold out a promise and may transform our understanding of these ancient compositions from myth to history.

Excerpt from Principles of Industrial Organization As industrial enterprises have grown in magnitude, as processes have become more refined and competition more keen the problems of organization have steadily grown m importance. Just as the tools and processes of our forefathers became inadequate as enterprises grew in magnitude so the simple administrative methods formerly m use have long since been outgrown by modem plants. Aside, however, from these reasons there are other factors affecting organization, which, while of little importance in former times, promise to be of great importance in the organizations of the future. The ideals that man has held before him in his toilsome journey from savagery to civilization have varied with changing time and place. Among many of the older nations war was the central thought, the country was an armed camp and predatory methods were an approved means of national support. In other cases some form of religion was the predominating influence, and the social and industrial organization was modelled accordingly. In a few of the older civilizations industry was held in high esteem; but for the most part it was considered menial to labor and industry was adjudged by standards that now seem strange indeed. But as the humanistic side of civilization has made progress we have attained higher ideals regarding industry. Never before in the history' of mankind has it been so universally acknowledged that physical, mental and moral well-being rest upon and are solely supported by labor. Industry is the business of the civilized world, and the greater part of our problems, national, state and home, center around the great industrial questions. Furthermore, industry is being looked upon more and more, not as an incidental matter, nor merely as a means of securing personal profits, but as the great basic feature of our civilization on which must rest our entire well-being. And with this new evaluation of industry has come new and higher ideals regarding service to humanity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The term “civilization” comes with considerable baggage, dichotomizing people, cultures, and histories as “civilized”—or not. While the idea of civilization has been deployed throughout history to justify all manner of interventions and sociopolitical engineering, few scholars have stopped to consider what the concept actually means. Here, Brett Bowden examines how the idea of civilization has informed our thinking about international relations over the course of ten centuries. From the Crusades to the colonial era to the global war on terror, this sweeping volume exposes “civilization” as a stage-managed account of history that legitimizes imperialism, uniformity, and conformity to Western standards, culminating in a liberal-democratic global order. Along the way, Bowden explores the variety of confrontations and conquests—as well as those peoples and places excluded or swept aside—undertaken in the name of civilization. Concluding that the “West and the rest” have more commonalities than differences, this provocative and engaging bookultimately points the way toward an authentic intercivilizational dialogue that emphasizes cooperation over clashes.

In the 5000 years of the history that we know, great empires grew and fell according to certain patterns that repeat themselves like laws of nature. The USA rose and grew to prominence in the world, reached its zenith in 1945 with the military victory and with the atom bomb, but is not destined to stay there forever. The book tries to draw the attention to the signs of decadence that match the patterns of the decadence of previous empires in history, and the patterns of growth, of progress in other cultural milieus: very few pundits in America, and in the western media in general, seem to be aware of this fact. The birth rates keep diminishing in America, and are very low in Europe. In other civilisations the birth rates have been high, and those countries count more in the world today, politically and economically, than a few generations ago. In addition, the irrational and passionate attitude of those peoples, including the aggressive suicidal attitude with religious and political connotations, is a sign of progress for them. Those people who are in favour of family planning programs and of a more relaxed morality are acting against the general interests of their countries.
