Paul Helm is a distinguished philosopher, with particular interests in the philosophy of religion. His work covers some of the most important aspects of the field as it has developed in the last thirty years with particular contributions to metaphysics, religious epistemology, and philosophical theology. In celebration of Helm’s life’s work, Reason in the Service of Faith brings together a range of his essays which reflect these central concerns of his thought. Over thirty of Helm's selected essays and four unpublished articles are gathered into five parts: Metaphilosophical Issues; Action, Change, and Personal Identity; Epistemology; God; and Creation, Providence, and Prayer. The volume is prefaced with a short editorial introduction, and ends with an extensive bibliography of Helm’s published works. Demonstrating the important connection between Helm’s theological and philosophical interests across his body of work, this collection is a remarkable resource for scholars of religion, philosophy, and theology.

The Essence Of The Self written by Geoffrey Madell and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-20 with Philosophy categories.

In this volume, Geoffrey Madell develops a revised account of the self, making a compelling case for why the "simple" or "anti-criterial" view of personal identity warrants a robust defense. Madell critiques recent discussions of the self for focusing on features which are common to all selves, and which therefore fail to capture the uniqueness of each self. In establishing his own view of personal identity, Madell proposes (a) that there is always a gap between ‘A is f and g’ and ‘I am f and g’; (b), that a complete description of the world offered without recourse to indexicals will fail to account for the contingent truth that I am one of the persons described; and (c), that an account of conscious perspectives on the world must take into account what it means for an apparently arbitrary one of these perspectives to be mine. Engaging with contemporary positions on the first person, embodiment, psychological continuity, and other ongoing arguments, Madell contends that there can be no such thing as a criterion of personal identity through time, that no bodily or psychological continuity approach to the issue can succeed, and that personal identity through time must be absolute, not a matter of degree. Madell’s view that the nature of the self is substantively different from that of objects in the world will generate significant discussion and debate among philosophers of mind.

In the labyrinth of our minds, memories hold sway, shaping our perceptions, beliefs, and identities. Yet, beneath the veneer of certainty lies a hidden realm—the realm of false memories. These illusory recollections, indistinguishable from genuine memories, have the power to distort our reality, undermine our trust in ourselves, and even lead to wrongful convictions in legal settings. False Memory: Delving into the Maze of Unreliable Recollections is a groundbreaking exploration of this enigmatic phenomenon, delving into the nature, origins, and far-reaching implications of false memories. With meticulous precision, Pasquale De Marco unravels the intricate mechanisms that allow false memories to form and take root in our minds. Drawing upon cutting-edge neuroscience, psychology, and legal scholarship, False Memory: Delving into the Maze of Unreliable Recollections illuminates the factors that contribute to false memory formation, including the influence of suggestion, the malleability of memory, and the biases that shape our perceptions. Through gripping case studies and real-life examples, Pasquale De Marco brings the complexities of false memories to life. Readers will encounter individuals whose lives have been irrevocably altered by the emergence of false memories, as well as those who have fought tirelessly to expose the truth and reclaim their own narratives. Memory And Power In Post War Europe written by Jan-Werner Müller and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-08-29 with History categories.

How has memory - collective and individual - influenced European politics after the Second World War and after 1989 in particular? How has the past been used in domestic struggles for power, and how have 'historical lessons' been applied in foreign policy? While there is now a burgeoning field of social and cultural memory studies, mostly focused on commemorations and monuments, this volume is the first to examine the connection between memory and politics directly. It investigates how memory is officially recast, personally reworked and often violently re-instilled after wars, and, above all, the ways memory shapes present power constellations. The chapters combine theoretical innovation in their approach to the study of memory with deeply historical, empirically based case studies of major European countries. The volume concludes with reflections on the ethics of memory, and the politics of truth, justice and forgetting after 1945 and 1989.
