This book aims to examine the importance of Christian philosophy in theological education through the prism of the life and teachings of Emile Cailliet. The book's primary focus is on his years of teaching at Princeton Theological Seminary, to which all the authors are connected. This work examines Cailliet as a believer, teacher, scholar, and philosopher. Although Cailliet wrote over twenty books, none of them articulated his formal position on the nature of theological education. However, it is clear from his teaching at seminary and his writings on philosophy, especially Pascal, that he saw philosophy as an integral part of seminary training. We want to preserve his work because he was a seminal but neglected thinker whose influence extends from science to literature and from philosophy to spirituality and theology. We believe that Emile Cailliet was one of the most influential Christians of the twentieth century. We invite the reader to stand in the long shadow of Cailliet and consider how his life and thought can help us tackle some of the knotty questions that face us today.

'Readable and expert - a brilliant guide to the life and thought of 17th century Europe's supreme polymath' Tom Holland 'A richly detailed account of Pascal's life and times, which displays an energetic sympathy for Pascal's startling combination of intellectual precocity and humble faith.' Rory Stewart 'A beautiful, accessible account of one of the era's most remarkable lives' Katherine Rundell He lived for just 39 years, yet Blaise Pascal was one of the most remarkable and creative figures of the seventeenth century. He is known for his famous (though often misunderstood) argument 'the Wager', but there's so much more to him than that. Pascal can lay claim to have built an early version of the modern computer, done ground-breaking work in mathematics and geometry, invented urban bus transport and virtually invented probability theory. He also produced one of the most haunting and effective works of Christian apologetics ever written. He is a major intellectual figure at the beginning of the modern age who blends together in his own person and thinking issues that are critical to our age. Blaise Pascal is therefore a crucial figure: not just in the history of European thought, but for how he can shed light on our many contemporary debates. From science to scepticism; mystical experience to distraction; religion to politics, self-love and death, Pascal's thinking was far-reaching. In this captivating biography, Graham Tomlin explores Pascal's short but extraordinary life, and the sweeping impact and relevance of his ideas to the modern world.

Blaise Pascal began as a mathematical prodigy, developed into a physicist and inventor, and had become by the end of his life in 1662 a profound religious thinker. As a philosopher, he was most convinced by the long tradition of scepticism, and so refused – like Kierkegaard – to build a philosophical or theological system. Instead, he argued that the human heart required other forms of discourse to come to terms with the basic existential questions – our nature, purpose and relationship with God. This introduction to the life and philosophical thought of Pascal is intended for the general reader. Strikingly illustrated, it traces the antithetical tensions in Pascal’s life from his infancy, when he was said to have been placed under the spell of a sorceress, to his final years of extreme asceticism. Pascal stressed both the misery and greatness of humanity, our finitude and our comprehension of the infinite. The book shows how his life, philosophical thought and literary style can best be understood in the light of the paradoxical view of human nature. It covers the methods of argument and the central issues of the Provincial Letters and of the Pensées; the Introduction places Pascal’s thought in the religious and political climate of seventeenth-century France, and a ‘Chronology of the Life of Pascal’ is also included.

Growing up in Newark, N.J. in a home shared by his parents, Mama, and a live-in tenant, J.R. McVey’s early years were not luxurious by any means. His neglectful mother and her golden child, his brother, made life difficult, but his hard-working father and kind Mama, his grandmother, graced him with the physical and emotional skills needed to make a name for himself. With their encouragement, J.R. enters the workforce at a young age, becoming one of the youngest construction managers in his teen years, working himself through college, and coming out with his degree in engineering. With the encouragement of his first girlfriend, and later his second wife, and his first wife, J.R. was able to build a legacy for himself and the following generations, giving them the childhood he never had. Stories of his various youthful adventures, medical ailments, joining the Boy Scouts and becoming a Scout Leader, and meeting the two loves of his life, and grieving their loss, are abound in his rags-to-riches memoir, The P.A.. About the author: J.R. McVey, Sr. is now in his eighties and retired from working in engineering and as a professor for a number of years. He currently resides in South Carolina.
