Excerpt from The Coast of Bohemia NE who after writing prose all his life suddenly essays to launch a volume of verse, must know something of the feeling with which an old-time sailor after coasting only his native shores found himself setting sail into an unknown sea. The author of this little volume knows quite as well as the most experienced mariner the temerity of sail ing an untried main in so frail a bark. But he is willing, if the Fates so decree, to go down with the unnumbered sail of that great eet which have throughout the ages faced the wide ocean of oblivion. Excerpt from Bohemia's Claim for Freedom T is to be feared that the average educated Englishman knows very little about Bohemia. Very likely he would never have known even that it has no sea-coast if Shakespeare had not inadvertently said that it bad. But the present war is teaching the English what their school masters, for some reason, have never taught them - a little history and geography. And the ancient though fallen kingdom of Bohemia, like the ancient though fallen kingdom of Poland, is likely to play a considerable part in the coming resurrection of the nations. Austria has been to Bohemia, as to Poland, an influence almost more unpardonable than that of the savages of Prussia, not because she did worse, but because she knew better. Austria built, and is still building, her power upon the ruin of Christian countries which have been her own bulwarks against the heathen. As she repaid the rescue by Sobiesky with annexation, and the Crusade of Servia with conspiracy, so she owed her possession of Bohemia to the Moslem victory at Mohacz. Austria has never grudged the blood of her neighbours in defence of her religion. But the Prussianised Austria of to-day is confronted in Bohemia and elsewhere with something which the Prussianised spirit can never understand - the te juvenation of defeat. An English neo-pagan poet said that only one god had ever died: but he might have added that only one has ever risen from the dead. This conception of the birth thatbegins in death is inconceivable to the northern barbarian; and the immortality of the martyred nations bewilders and confounds him. These small Christian States not only survive defeat, but celebrate defeat. They date from defeat; not, like the heathens ab urbe cozzdz'ta, but rather ab arbe capta. The Bohemian song and proverb says, More was lost on Mohacz's field, as the English (perhaps recalling their naval adven tures) say, \vorse things happen at sea. And a modern Servian sculptor is planning a colossal monument for the scene of the Servian ruin at Kosovo. The Prussians have no colossal monu ment upon the field of Jena. Excerpt from Great Britain and the Czecho-Slovaks The fact that Shakespeare in one of his plays speaks of the sea-coast of Bohemia is wrongly quoted as an example that even in old times the British people knew little about the Czechs. On the contrary it could be proved that the important historical role which the kingdom of Bohemia played in former times, was by no means overlooked in England. The first Bohemian king was so well known that even to-day a carol is sung about him in England: the Good King Wenceslas, an the Czechs are mentioned in old English chro nicles even as far back as the ninth century. Excerpt from The Sea Shore of Bohemia, or the True Shakespeare Dramatically Portrayed: With an Appendix on Shakespeare's Gloves The following Composition makes no pretence to be anything more than a few Conversational Episodes in the Life of William Shakespeare. Without consulting either publisher or manager the Writer has had his manuscript printed after his own fancy and for reasons that are his own and need not be noted here. He is not ignorant of the vast output of unacted "plays," good, bad and indifferent; hopeless, useless and pitiful: he also knows that the best and most successful pens have not escaped censure; so, with neither high hopes nor great ferns for his little venture, should it ever be seen by the general public or come within the range of the particular critic, the Author trusts that his friendly readers may find the book sufficiently interesting to he perused, and not unworthy of preservation. Excerpt from The Coast of Bohemia In one of the old-fashioned books for children there was a story of the adventures of a cent (or perhaps that coin of older lineage, a penny) told by itself, which came into my mind when the publishers suggested that the readers of a new edition of this book might like to know how it happened to be written. I promptly fancied the book speaking, and taking upon itself the burden of autobiography, which we none of us find very heavy; and no sooner had I done so than I began actually to hear from it in a narrative of much greater distinctness than I could have supplied for it. "You must surely remember," it protested to my forgetfuluess, "that you first thought of me in anything like definite shape as you stood looking on at the trotting-races of a county fair in Northern Ohio, and that I began to gather color and character while yon loitered through the art-building, and dwelt with pitying interest upon the forlorn, unpromising exhibits there.
