Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 12 A kind communication received from a correspondent enables us to correct this mistake. De Quincey's Fatal Marksman, it obligingly informs us, is from the German of J. A. Apel, and is not the only existing English translation of the original story by that author, - another having appeared, under the title of Der Freisclnitz or The Magic Ball9, in a volume of "Tales of the Wild and Wonderful" published in 1825 by Hurst, Robinson, & Co. of London. With the help of the clue so furnished, we have ascertained the following particulars: - In the first volume of the Gespcnsterbuch, or Book of Ghost Stories, published at Leipsig in 1810-14 by Johann August Apel (1771-1816), in conjunction with Friedrich August Schulz, another popular German author of that date, but writing always under the assumed name of Friedrich Laun (1770-1849), there appeared Der Freischiitz, a story of Apel's, which soon afterwards became immortal by being used by Weber's friend Friedrich Kind for the libretto of Weber's famous opera, first produced in Berlin in 1822. To the popularity of this opera must be due the fact that there were two early translations of Apel's story into English. But Dc Quincey's translation was earlier by two years than that mentioned by our correspondent; for, having looked by mere accident into an anonymous three-volume collection of "Popular Tales and Romances of the Northern Nations," published in 1823 by Simpkin and Marshall of London, there, to our surprise, in vol. iii, we found De Quincey's Fatal Markman, exactly as we now have it, both title and text, but without the name of either the original author or the translator. The inference is that one of De Quincey's little commercial asides in 1823, when he was at his busiest in writing for the London Magazine, was this contribution to a collection of Tales from the German, and that, having a copy of it beside him in 1859, he thought it then worth reprinting just as it stood. Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 1: Autobiography From 1785 to 1803 IT was in 1852 that De Quincey, who was then sixty-seven years of age, and had been resident in or near Edinburgh through the preceding five-and-twenty years, began the pre paration of a collective edition Of his writings, to be published by the Edinburgh house of Mr. James Hogg. The scheme of such a collective edition had been anticipated by the American publishing firm of Messrs. Ticknor and Fields of Boston. A volume or two of their American edition had already appeared when De Quincey undertook the British edition. Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 4: Biographies and Biographical Sketches The three preceding volumes contain those writings of De Quincey which collectively constitute his autobiography and literary reminiscences. They carry us on, in a general way, to about the year when De Quincey had become famous as The English opium-eater, a versatile contributor to London periodicals, but had returned to his home at Grasmere after unsatisfactory trials of residence in London, and had begun to think that, if ever he removed from Grasmere permanently, it must be to Edinburgh. While the volumes make vivid for us, however, the main course of his life to the date indicated, - when he was in the fortieth year of his age, - there are some particulars of his family history through the time traversed about which they have left us uninformed. It may be well, at the present point, to supply this defect, and at the same time to add such par ticulars of his later family history as may be required, by way of biographical accompaniment and elucidation, here and there, in the series of his writings generally. Of De Quincey's father we have heard a good deal. We can recollect him as the Manchester merchant, much of an invalid, who died in 1793, at the age of forty, when De Quincey was but a child. Of De Quincey's brothers and sisters we have also heard a good deal. There have been immortalised for us especially those two child-sisteis, Jane and Elizabeth, who had died before their father, so that De Quincey's memories of them survived but as mysterious gleams from his dreamy infancy. Nor are we likely to forget either his eldest and all-domineering brother, William. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 6 How firmly De Quincey held by this notion of the distinctive characteristic of the "Essay," as compared with other kinds of writing, appears from the striking words in which, after referring to the three above-named essays as examples of his own efforts in this line, he claims the merit of fidelity to his principle, in intention at least, in all his other efforts of the same general character. "These specimens," he says, meaning Cicero, The Caesors, and The Essenes, are sufficient for the purpose of informing the reader that I do not write without a thoughtful consideration of my subject, and also that to think reasonably upon any question has never been allowed by me as a sufficient ground for writing upon it, unless I believed myself able to offer some considerable novelty." What a panic in the writing industry, what a dropping of pens, what a suppression of cartloads of intended matter for the press, if this principle of De Quincey's were made imperative, - viz. the principle (to state it in its fullest form) that all literature worthy of the name must, in some way or other, and to some extent or other, consist of the previously unknown, unimagined, or uncommunicated! Meanwhile it is with Essay literature that we are immediately concerned. Now, although it was to three historical essays that De Quincey pointed as illustrations of his own practice in Essay-writing, that was a mere accident of the moment. He might have pointed to other papers of his, not expressly historical, or less obviously historical, which for that very reason would have perhaps better illustrated his notion of the characteristic distinction of an Essay, - viz, that it should exhibit the strictly speculative or ratiocinative mode of intellect at work in the investigation of some question or the solution of some problem. Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 5 The papers included in this volume, like those in the last, were written a different points of De Quincey's life, and are culled from different periodicals. The long opening paper, entitled "Dr. Parr, or Whiggism in its Relations to Literature," but containing a great deal more than could be guessed from that title, and altogether one of the most fascinating specimens of De Quincey in what may be called his mischievous biographico-satirical vein, was a contribution to Blackwood in 1831. The amusing little paper called "Anecdotage" was one of his contributions to the London Magazine in 1823; the pleasant little biographic sketch of the Marquess Wellesley appeared in Tait's Magazine in 1846; "Coleridge and Opium-Eating" is a very interesting Blackwood paper of 1845; and the fine paper on Charles Lamb was written in 1848 for the North British Review. Of the two sketches of Professor Wilson, the first and more careful is of date 1829, and has been resuscitated from the columns of a long-defunct weekly once known as the Edinburgh Literary Gazette, while the other and slighter is of date 1850, and from the later and less-forgotten Edinburgh weekly called Hogg's Instructor. The valuable but strangely whimsical sketch entitled "Sir William Hamilton" was a contribution in 1852 to the same Hogg's Instructor' and the two closing papers of more distant historical range, entitled "Charlemagne" and "Joan of Arc," take us back respectively to Blackwood of 1832 and Tait of 1847.
