Excerpt from The Collection and Disposal of Municipal Waste The subject of waste collection and disposal in American and Canadian municipalities has from the first been a perplexing and difficult problem of municipal administration. It has not been given the attention bestowed upon other branches of municipal service, but most cities have followed the primitive methods in use from the settlement of the country and along lines that are now proven too unsatisfactory and too insanitary to be continued. There is an increasing demand that more economical and sani tary results be obtained in this class of work, and to secure these it seems to be necessary that improved methods be employed, larger sums of money spent, and that the plants be designed and operated under more scientific and expert supervision. Rapid population growth, high standards of living, and technological development are constantly increasing the diversity and quantity of solid waste. The production of solid municipal waste associated with the high proportion of organic waste and its improper disposal lead to considerable environmental pollution due to the emission of greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, etc. In such a challenging environment, municipal authorities need to develop more effective solutions to manage the growing urban solid waste. Most of the municipal solid waste mainly constitutes degradable materials, which represent a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions in urban localities. Integrated solid waste management approaches must be developed and improved to manage the increasing organic fractions of municipal solid waste, which helps to reduce greenhouse emissions with potential economic benefits. A sustainable management of municipal solid waste systems constitutes a promising and attractive trend to study current consumption behaviors responsible for waste generation, and to protect the global ecosystem. This book presents the management of municipal of solid waste, including recycling and landfill technologies. Moreover, composition and types of waste will be investigated. As a result, the most appropriate and feasible scenarios for the management of municipal solid waste are presented to provide the respected readership with the scientific background for sustainable development in these processes, which are increasingly supported by innovative methodologies for holistic assessment of process sustainability.

The market of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and disposal has changed substantially over the past thirty years. This study will help guide both newcomers and past contributors through the fundamental aspects of policies designed to reduce the external costs of MSW collection, and the important empirical relationships that, in the end, govern the selection of MSW policies. The International Library of Environmental Economics and Policy explores the influence of economics on the development of environmental and natural resource policy. In a series of twenty-five volumes, the most significant journal essays in key areas of contemporary environmental and resource policy are collected. Scholars who are recognized for their expertise and contribution to the literature in the various research areas serve as volume editors and write essays that provides the context for the collection. Garbage In The Cities written by Martin V. Melosi and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Pre this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-11-26 with Science categories.

As recently as the 1880s, most American cities had no effective means of collecting and removing the mountains of garbage, refuse, and manure-over a thousand tons a day in New York City alone-that clogged streets and overwhelmed the senses of residents. In his landmark study, Garbage in the Cities, Martin Melosi offered the first history of efforts begun in the Progressive Era to clean up this mess.Since it was first published, Garbage in the Cities has remained one of the best historical treatments of the subject. This thoroughly revised and updated edition includes two new chapters that expand the discussion of developments since World War I. It also offers a discussion of the reception of the first edition, and an examination of the ways solid waste management has become more federally regulated in the last quarter of the twentieth century.Melosi traces the rise of sanitation engineering, accurately describes the scope and changing nature of the refuse problem in U.S. cities, reveals the sometimes hidden connections between industrialization and pollution, and discusses the social agendas behind many early cleanliness programs. Absolutely essential reading for historians, policy analysts, and sociologists, Garbage in the Cities offers a vibrant and insightful analysis of this fascinating topic.

Excerpt from Collection and Disposal of Municipal Refuse The recent development in America started in 1887, by the American Public Health Association, with the appointment of a Committee on Garbage Disposal, of which Dr. Kilvington was Chairman. In 1888, this Committee reported on the Destruction of Organic Refuse by fire. In 1889, a report was presented favoring both reduction and incineration as the promising methods of future garbage disposal. In 1894, Rudolph Hering was appointed Chairman, elaborate statistics were collected from more than a hundred cities, and in 1897 a report was made on the collection and disposal of waste matter in many of these cities, with general conclusions regarding the entire problem. A great diversity of opinion was observed regarding the proper methods to be pursued. The Committee also studied the English experiences and the very complete, instructive, and valuable experiments just then being conducted in Hamburg and Berlin, and presented conclusions which endeavored to place the whole subject on a scientific foundation. The sanitary aspect was given the first and the financial aspect the second place in all recommendations. It was pointed out that a proper solution for any city or town would require a knowledge of the quantity, character, and composition of the refuse, and also of the local conditions controlling the several parts of the problem.
