This is a critical overview of monster magazines from the 1950s through the 1970s. "Monster magazine" is a blanket term to describe both magazines that focus primarily on popular horror movies and magazines that contain stories featuring monsters, both of which are illustrated in comic book style and printed in black and white. The book describes the rise and fall of these magazines, examining the contributions of Marvel Comics and several other well-known companies, as well as evaluating the effect of the Comics Code Authority on both present and future efforts in the field. It identifies several sub-genres, including monster movies, zombies, vampires, sword-and-sorcery, and pulp-style fiction. The work includes several indexes and technical credits.

Although he is most remembered for his vast collection of science fiction memorabilia; his influential magazine, Famous Monsters of Filmland; and his frequent sci-fi convention appearances, Forrest J Ackerman (1916-2008) also left a sizeable body of work in print. An introductory biographical section traces Ackerman's early enthusiasm for pulp magazines and film productions of a fantastic nature, his rise to prominence in "fandom," his acquisition of memorabilia, his work as a literary agent, the founding of his landmark magazine in 1958, and his friendship with a number of performers and personnel from genre films. The extensive bibliography includes listings of books, published letters, articles, fiction, verse, speeches, screenplays, comics, discography, liner notes, and periodicals edited and published by Ackerman. A thorough filmography, a selected listing of nationally televised appearances, and rare photographs of Ackerman throughout his lifetime complete this definitive catalog of one of science fiction's most interesting personalities.

The Blighted Eye written by Glenn Bray and has been published by Fantagraphics Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-30 with Antiques & Collectibles categories.

The Blighted Eye is the most copious, the most diverse, and the most lavish compilation of original comic art ever published ― all from the mind-boggling collection of Glenn Bray. Bray was an enthusiast of marginal or outsider American pop culture when he started to collect original comic art in 1965 ― a time when very few people, including the artists themselves, truly valued the original art. Bray has, over the last nearly 50 years, amassed the most eclectic collection of original comic art in private hands. The book features work by a pantheon of cartooning masters, including Charles Addams, Carl Barks, Charles Burns, Al Capp, Dan Clowes, Jack Cole, R. Crumb, Jack Davis, Kim Deitch, Will Elder, Al Feldstein, Virgil Finlay, Drew Friedman, Chester Gould, Justin Green, Rick Griffin, Bill Griffith, Matt Groening, George Grosz, V.T. Hamlin, Jaime Hernandez, George Herriman, Al Hirshfeld, Graham Ingels, Bernard Krigstein, Harvey Kurtzman, Gary Panter, Virgil Partch, Savage Pencil, Peter Pontiac, Charles Rodrigues, Spain Rodriguez, Charles Schulz, Gilbert Shelton, Joost Swarte, Stanislav Szukalski, Irving Tripp, Chris Ware, S. Clay Wilson, Basil Wolverton, Wallace Wood, Jim Woodring, Art Young, and ― it should go without saying ― many more.

Bob is one of the "pioneers" of the independent horror publishing field. His first book was THE COLLECTORS GUIDE TO MONSTER MAGAZINES in 1977, self-published along with Dick Zdinak, it was considered the "bible" for film-monster magazine collecting. It also marked the first time that he had one of his illustrations published. In this case it was the cover that portrayed Lon Chaney as the vampire in London After Midnight. Bob published an updated second COLLECTORS GUIDE in 1988 complete with Jack Davis cover art. In 1978, he partnered up with Bill Wilson to design and co-publish a slick sci-fi magazine called QUESTAR that reached 100,000 circulation at its peak in 1981.In 1980 he formed IMAGINE, INC. and began a long career publishing and designing some now classic trade paperback titles including Tom Savini's GRANDE ILLUSIONS & GRANDE ILLUSIONS BOOK 2, Dick Smith's MONSTER MAKE-UP HANDBOOK, THE COMPLETE NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD FILMBOOK, EROTICISM IN THE FANTASY CINEMA (intro by Chris Lee), FORREST J ACKERMAN, FAMOUS MONSTER OF FILMLAND (Intro by Vincent Price) and BRUNO SAMMARTINO, AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF WRESTLING'S LIVING LEGEND.In 1993, Bob acted as Chairman for the ZOMBIE JAMBOREE...The 25th Anniversary Con for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in Pittsburgh, PA that brought together the original cast for the first time in twenty-five years. He had previously chaired two other cons in Pittsburgh FANTASY FILM CELEBRITY CON & CON 2 in 1978 & 1979. The '79 show was Caroline Munro's first US con appearance.Other publishing projects include another magazine titled SCREAM QUEENS ILLUSTRATED with over twenty Playboy style issues published (Edited by John Russo and Art Directed and Designed by Bob), SCREAM BEAT, DRIVE-IN CINEMA and MAKING MOVIES and several trading card sets including five series of SCREAM QUEENS, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (with FANTACO), TOM SAVINI GRANDE ILLUSIONS (with FANTACO), WRESTLING LEGENDS, FANTASY GIRLS series 1&2, YOU SLAY ME, two series of DARK SHADOWS cards and three DARK SHADOWS limited edition 18X24 illustrated prints by John Graziano. In 1978, Bob played the "SCOPE ZOMBIE" in George Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD, he also played a priest in CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD and a cop in John Russo's SANTA CLAWS. In 1979, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. Bob's wife Dee and daughter Dawn acted in John Russo's SANTA CLAWS and Dee was the ZOMBIE MOM and Dawn was the ZOMBIE DAUGHTER in the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 30th Anniversary Edition in 1998.Bob's latest project was compiling and publishing his latest book titled MEMORIES OF THE LIVING DEAD.This book showcases Bob's talent with a brush while offering the reader reproductions of many of Bob's original paintings of some very famous monsters.

From the trashy to the epic, from the classics to today's blockbusters, this cinefile’s guidebook reviews nearly 1,000 of the biggest, baddest, and brightest from every age and genre of cinematic science fiction! Once upon a time, science fiction was only in the future. It was the stuff of drive-ins and cheap double-bills. Then, with the ever-increasing rush of new, society-altering technologies, science fiction pushed its way to the present, and it busted out of the genre ghetto of science fiction and barged its way into the mainstream. What used to be mere fantasy (trips to the moon? Wristwatch radios? Supercomputers capable of learning?) are now everyday reality. Whether nostalgic for the future or fast-forwarding to the present, The Sci-Fi Movie Guide: The Universe of Film from Alien to Zardoz covers the broad and widening range of science-fiction movies. It Came From 1957 written by Rob Craig and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-21 with Performing Arts categories.

America in the 1950s was a cauldron of contradictions. Advances in technology chafed against a grimly conservative political landscape; the military-industrial complex ceaselessly promoted the "Communist menace"; young marrieds fled crumbling cities for artificial communities known as suburbs; and the corporate cipher known as "The Organization Man" was created, along with stifling images of women. The decade, huddled under the fear of nuclear holocaust, was also dedicated to all things futuristic. Science fiction was in its salad days, in magazines and novels and in motion pictures, trying every trick in the book to lure customers back from television, including reliance on monster movies. All of these forces collided in 1957, when an astounding 57 movies of the science fiction, horror and fantasy variety were shown in the United States--a record unmatched to this day. Reflecting some of the socio-political topics of the day, several are exceptional examples of their genres. This book critically discusses each of the films.
