The Doctor In Colonial America written by Zachary Friedenberg and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Medicine categories.

In this book, the author re-creates medicine in the Colonial past. It was a world where surgeons, working at military hospitals, received one and one-third dollars a day for their efforts; where operations, most frequently amputations, were performed without benefit of anesthesia; and where nostalgia was deemed a legitimate diagnosis and was treated as an organic disease during the Revolutionary War. During this time when "antiseptic" was a new word, readers will discover how puritanically minded people were resistant to smallpox inoculations as being against the will of God; about physicians forced to experiment with new vaccines on their own family members for want of other subjects; and even about how best to treat an outbreak of scurvy aboard a slave ship. More than just a historical work, this book examines the medical theories and surgical practices that provided the groundwork for modern medicine.

Healers on the Colonial Market is one of the few studies on the Dutch East Indies from a postcolonial perspective. It provides an enthralling addition to research on both the history of the Dutch East Indies and the history of colonial medicine. This book will be of interest to historians, historians of science and medicine, and anthropologists. How successful were the two medical training programmes established in Jakarta by the colonial government in 1851? One was a medical school for Javanese boys, and the other a school for midwives for Javanese girls, and the graduates were supposed to replace native healers, the dukun. However, the indigenous population was not prepared to use the services of these doctors and midwives. Native doctors did in fact prove useful as vaccinators and assistant doctors, but the school for midwives was closed in 1875. Even though there were many horror stories of mistakes made during dukun-assisted deliveries, the school was not reopened, and instead a handful of girls received practical training from European physicians. Under the Ethical Policy there was more attention for the welfare of the indigenous population and the need for doctors increased. More native boys received medical training and went to work as general practitioners. Nevertheless, not everybody accepted these native doctors as the colleagues of European physicians.

Practising Colonial Medicine written by Anna Crozier and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-24 with History categories.

The role of the Colonial Medical Service - the organisation responsible for healthcare in British overseas territories - goes to the heart of the British Colonial project. Practising Colonial Medicine is a unique study based on original sources and research into the work of doctors who served in East Africa. It shows the formulation of a distinct colonial identity based on factors of race, class, background, training and Colonial Service traditions, buttressed by professional skills and practice. Recruitment to the Medical Service bound its members to the Colonial Service ethos exemplified by the principles of the legendary Sir Ralph Furse, head of Colonial Office recruitment to the Service. Thus the Service was to be a corps d'élite consisting of Furse's 'good men' - self-reliant, practical, conscientious, professionally qualified people whose personalities were 'such as to command the respect and trust of the native inhabitants of the colony'. Professsional qualifications were important but 'secondary to character'. Anna Crozier analyses all aspects of recruitment, qualifications, training as well as the vital personal factors that shaped the Service's character - religion, a sense of adventure, professional interest, ideas of imperial service, family traditions, professional ties, perceptions of service to humanity and the building up of a common service mentality among colonial medical staff. This is the first comprehensive history of the Colonial Medical Service and makes an important contribution to our understanding of the social and cultural aspects of medical history.

Medicine In Colonial America written by Oscar Reiss and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

In Medicine in Colonial America, Oscar Reiss recognizes the theories and practices exercised by colonial physicians, and illustrates the gradual evolution of Dark Age medical ignorance to the beginnings of modern-day enlightenment. Reiss identifies the various levels of training for physicians from extensive schooling at respected universities to the informal instruction of mountebanks and quacks. He illustrates the numerous, unorthodox methods including bleeding, vomiting, purging, and cupping, used by both charlatans and educated practitioners alike to treat disease, and weighs the quality of colonial life against the available medical knowledge of the day. Reiss discusses the early attempts to license physicians, competitive pricing of medical service, colonial surgery and early autopsies, and cites important medical breakthroughs and theories. An interesting and informative read, Medicine in Colonial America will be of great value to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists as well as historians.

The Colonial Medical Service was the personnel section of the Colonial Service, employing the doctors who tended to the health of both the colonial staff and the local populations of the British Empire. Although the Service represented the pinnacle of an elite government agency, its reach in practice stretched far beyond the state, with the members of the African service collaborating, formally and informally, with a range of other non-governmental groups. This collection of essays on the Colonial Medical Service of Africa illustrates the diversity and active collaborations to be found in the untidy reality of government medical provision. The authors present important case studies covering former British colonial dependencies in Africa, including Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar. They reveal many new insights into the enactments of colonial policy and the ways in which colonial doctors negotiated the day-to-day reality during the height of imperial rule in Africa. The book provides essential reading for scholars and students of colonial history, medical history and colonial administration.
