Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Hamburg, language: English, abstract: It is a fact that Shakespeare’s plays are an essential part of the Elizabethan period and hence deal with topics characteristic of this time. This is also true of The Tempest, which was probably written in 1610 – 1611, for it is concerned with the theme of colonization and exploration of the New World, the newly discovered Americas. The Elizabethan period is known as the Age of Exploration. Thus, The Tempest not only deals with the effects of colonization and civilization on the natives but some critics also tend to read this play as a metaphor of colonialism, since every character is concerned with how he would govern the island if he was the ruler. However, The Tempest can be regarded as a play whose plot is completely original and also very personal. The critic Richard Dutton even claims that there is a “theory that Prospero in The Tempest represents Shakespeare himself”. Critics have taken this play very seriously and have pointed out its complexity. Hence, Stanley Wells says that “The Tempest (...) is a supremely poetic drama (...) because it speaks (...) on many levels, universally relevant (...) and (...) universally effective”. Why is The Tempest regarded as so original and unique? Well, one might find an answer to this question by taking a closer look at its background, its sources, its structure and at its main characters. For this reason, I will deal with the sources of The Tempest in more detail in the following chapter. In a next step, the dramatic structure of the play will be analyzed. Since this play is mainly about colonizers and the colonized, it is also of vital importance to analyze the prominent character Caliban and the European characters’ attitude to him, in this context. It will be argued that Caliban becomes a victim of colonization.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, course: Oberseminar Theories of American Studies, 4 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Postcolonial theory results from a network of political and cultural tensions between colonizers and colonized. This approach will de-construct Eurocentrism showing that European values and standards are not universal. Highlighting that the same historical event can be interpreted in radically different ways depending on perspective, norms and values, accepted values will be destabilized and marked as constructs. Further, this paper will question the reasons given for colonialism and deconstructs them in order to reveal the economic or political interests they are based on. I will critically examine the representations of Caliban’s culture in Western discourse. In The Tempest, cultural ideology provides the ideological network for the colonial endeavours which could be theorized as bringing progress to an archaic world. A striking example for the strategy deconstructing “othering” is revealed in Chapter 1 where Caliban is presented as a completely inhuman being revealing strong racism. Therefore, Shakespeare implicitly legitimizes the colonial endeavor, because people like Caliban deprived of full humanity can be regarded as people without history, culture and they have therefore no logical claim to sovereignty. Shakespeare also produces a symptomatic reading of western discourse by psychoanalyzing to reveal western fear of the “other”.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Didaktik für das Fach Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 2,0, Universität Potsdam (Anglistik & Amerikanistik), Veranstaltung: Shakespeare’s Later Comedies & Problem Plays , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In 1492, Christopher Columbus first landed on the American continent. This event marks the beginning of its conquest by the Europeans. Some people celebrated the sailor as a hero; others assessed him as a power-hungry and dispiteous conqueror. Many indigenous people were oppressed, enslaved and eradicated by the following European settlers (Karras and McNeill 7). By the time William Shakespeare wrote The Tempest in 1611, the English were accustomed to unimaginable stories about voyages abroad. Therefore, colonisation and exploration of the unknown islands continued to be frequent topics of conversation, heated-up by the many returning travellers. One of these stories circulated around the ‘Sea Adventure’, a flagship carrying Admiral George Somers and his crew that disappeared and was presumed lost at sea. Unbelievably, almost a full year later in the end of May, 1610, two pinnaces appeared at Jamestown carrying the staff and passengers from the ‘Sea Adventure’. The ship had – by force of a tempest – crashed on the island of Bermuda, which had – in contrast to its reputation as dangerous ‘Isle of Devils’ – a plenty of food and shelter. The stranded built their new sailing ships and completed their voyage to Jamestown (Müller, 343). Seeing the similarities between this incident and the rough plot of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, one could assume that the author got inspired by these stories to write a play, which broaches the issue of the conquest of the New World. In dealing with the recurrent motif of the master-servant relationship, I will prove that The Tempest can be perceived as a play about colonialism and subjugation. After an elaborate part about the motif, I will detail the traits of the main figures of The Tempest, which allegorize the people of the colonial era. Still, it’s not supposed to be a full characterisation and I will only name some facts due to the restricted number of pages, but it is much-needed to understand the individual relationships.

A longtime professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, Ronald Takaki was recognized as one of the foremost scholars of American ethnic history and diversity. When the first edition of A Different Mirror was published in 1993, Publishers Weekly called it "a brilliant revisionist history of America that is likely to become a classic of multicultural studies" and named it one of the ten best books of the year. Now Rebecca Stefoff, who adapted Howard Zinn's best-selling A People's History of the United States for younger readers, turns the updated 2008 edition of Takaki's multicultural masterwork into A Different Mirror for Young People. Drawing on Takaki's vast array of primary sources, and staying true to his own words whenever possible, A Different Mirror for Young People brings ethnic history alive through the words of people, including teenagers, who recorded their experiences in letters, diaries, and poems. Like Zinn's A People's History, Takaki's A Different Mirror offers a rich and rewarding "people's view" perspective on the American story.
